I have learned that this not only applies to pastors, but it applies to ME as well! As a big bookworm, I may read other books, but count the Word of God first and foremost in my daily life. What a blessing it has been, when I started living this way.
This is a great message I am thinking not going back to my family's church because the pastor is 'wasting' his pulpit by preaching his opinion on things rather than what God is saying. so I don't hear the Bible i hear the pastor. God Bless
I do not think that that's what Piper is saying. Truth does exist outside of the Scriptures, that's called general revelation. However, the only source of CERTAIN truth can be found only in the Bible, that's called special revelation. Look at Paul's weighty exhortation to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4. "I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the WORD..." Preach the Word. We dare not disobey Paul.
no, you can find truth many places, but it's partial truth, whereas when the anointed person God put is talking the WoG then it's not man speaking but God speaking through a man, and that is the Truth.
The Truth what is it? Jesus already answered.
in John 17:17, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
Besides reading basically every word in his books? Have you bothered to read future grace where he says that faith is trust in the future promise of god to sanctify you? He defines faith and obedience, and in doing so he owes Rome an apology because we never should have split.
I would absolutely agree. Future Grace is flat out heresy, it defines faith AS obedience and active. This is unbiblical, for saving faith is passive and justification comes by the active faith of Jesus Christ and His earned righteousness for us. We actively pursue in faith after our passive reception of God's gift, but we do not continue to 'obedient faith' to finally be sanctified and/or glorified. These problems come about since Piper sees no Law/Gospel distinction, just like Daniel Fuller.
Paul explains that obedience comes from faith. This is a cause and effect relationship. If you want to say that obedience indicates the presence of faith I would say that is true and what James is talking about in his book. If you say that obedience or the expectation of obedience IS faith that is untrue and not supported by any scripture, but specifically Romans 1. The two are related (cause/effect) but they are not redundancies, they are different acts and have different meanings.
You obviously do not understand Piper's position on faith and works. Which is scary that you have read "basically every word in his books" and come to that conclusion. anyway, i recommend that watch the "battling unbelief : holiness" video. you should be careful comming on this comment area acussing Piper of heresy. you are 22 years old...own it with some humility. You know just as well as i do that Piper would not disagree with 3:28..so maybe you should do a little bit more homework.
So i guess if talking about sex is wrong then we should take out 1&2 Corinthians and SOS? You have to understand the culture and what pastors are fighting against. If it is not relevant to the culture at hand then it is not going to resonate with the people. Driscoll has phenomenal theology and all his stuff is biblical, Paul was just as vulgar with the church at Corinth and Isaiah talked about menstrual rags. Be understanding and loving. Im not trying to condemn but to enlighten.
Reformed, sola scriptura, sola fide, sola gratia straight up
He may be emergent, but he knows that the Word of God should never be compromised, His church is in the middle of a godless city and he really is a man of God in a fresh way to get the gospel to be culturally transcendent without watering down the gospel
RESPONSE TO DonCeydic: Yes, abslolutely, preachers should preach the Bible, a ancient book, because although it was recorded centuries ago, it was inspired by God, who is eternal. His word, explained faithfully, is always the most current, most insightful, most applicable thing going. To substitute anything else for the Bible is to replace the treasure with a trinket.

so instead of our spiritual leaders telling us about things happening today and applying it to our faith we should listen about things that happened thousands of years ago and how it applies to nothing
our spiritual leaders should tell us things that happened thousands of years ago because that builds our faith and knowledge of an unchanging God who sustains us through things happening today, or put another way, we don't take things happening today and apply it to our faith, we take our faith and apply it to things happening today
May the Lord Bless You Pastor, for speaking the truth.....
Amo 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
It is a sad fact at how false teachings are everywhere. How people believe they need to change stuff and mold it into something else then what the Bible says...
Jesus Christ is my treasure. The way of the narrow gate is through treasuring Christ, and Christ alone. We must turn from the idols the world displays, and then we will endure to the end. If we don't turn from the idols then how is it that Christ is our treasure?
I have learned that this not only applies to pastors, but it applies to ME as well! As a big bookworm, I may read other books, but count the Word of God first and foremost in my daily life. What a blessing it has been, when I started living this way.

so, then its God that's in the pulpit and not the man.
You can't have you cake and eat it too. This makes no sense.

John Piper should write a book called "Don't Waste Your Pulpit" like "Don't Waste Your Life.' I enjoy listening to his sermons. :)

too bad Piper dont tell Mark Driscoll to stop wasting his pulpit
billiefan2000 3 years ago
what are you talking about???? Piper and Driscoll are good friends and completely agree on everything theologicaly and biblically.
LinkD3 3 years ago 2
so driscoll being vulgar and obessed with preaching sex sermons is theologicaly and biblically good?
i would rather have a preacher like john macarthur or paul washer
and not someone who wants to itch people's ears like driscoll does
billiefan2000 3 years ago
BTW, you are saying that as long as Driscoll hides behing Piper
Driscoll is "okay"
that shows John Piper is a enabler of Mark's vulgar sermons by not rebuking Mark's vulgar language

I never said talking about sex is wrong
I said obessing on it like Driscoll and other seeker-sensitive pastors do
is a problem
I would rather hear in church, how to grow spirtually, not how to be great in bed
