  • what animation program do u use?

  • @BrickDude606 Then the thingy glitched, because when I watched, it said "49,999 views", so I watched again...

  • LOL! I WAS THE 50,000 VIEWER

  • where did you get that lego bowling set

  • thanks but one question... what if its like abasket ball from the sponge bob set and was no hole in it?

  • @familydylan1 Blu-tack? I don't know. Just play around until you find something that works.

  • thank you very much but what software do i use to mask? (im new at all this lol)

  • @mazban1 photoshop

  • Thank-you so much for sharing your secrets! It is an awesome effect.

  • I was wondering what editing program you were using to erase around the ball

  • Wow, I definitely admire the tedious rotoscoping with only Photoshop. I see what you mean, and now I understand.

  • You probably know more about the focusing thing than I do (excellent craftsmanship regarding details!); however, couldn't you simply use the same clean plate with a blur added to simulate perspective?

And then, maybe just for fun, precompose the clean plate, toggle the 3D switch, and then animate a virtual camera's zoom and aperture to create a sort of faux Z-axis traveling-down-the-lane effect.

Just some initial thoughts; pardon my ignorance if I've overlooked something obvious in my assumpt

  • @TheStanishStudios I totally get what you're saying but there's a few things standing in the way of doing what you suggest. The main one is that I didn't have AE at the time - this was all done a frame at a time in Photoshop. Then there's the difficulty of getting a clean plate - focal length is pretty short with macro shots like this, so it's almost impossible to get everything in focus at the same time. Ultimately, it was easier to do it like this.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • um, why didn't you use the same background pic for the masking, you only need to take a background pic every other frame, if the actual camera is moving. please reply, i would like to know. great animation!

  • @LlamaBoyProductions Because of the reason in the video description.

  • @0ldScratch oh, sorry, i forgot to read description, thanks! i love your creativity, and your amazing films!

  • This is from Oldscratch!

    Wait....ARE YOU OLDSCRATCH???????

  • @FilmForceStudio Well DUH!

  • You could easily.. just throw it :O

  • @Funbandza No you couldn't. Remember that your taking still pictures you can't just throw the ball and get it looking right unless you had a DSLR and wern't using stopmotion pro. This person used a Camcorder and stopmotion pro therefore they could not jusht throw it. Also you wouldn't get it looking perfect if you just threw it.

  • u only need 1 wthout ball

  • @ipodnazar The focus would have been out of whack.

  • @OldScratch Can't you just take one frame without the ball and use the same frame for editing everything? (Since you don't change the background)

  • @twoeasy3 That's what I was thinking

  • Comment removed

  • @LegoMoviesandCustoms No I didn't. This is the account where I post behind the scenes stuff.

  • @LegoMoviesandCustoms no u moron this is his second account he posts behined the scene stuff

  • Nice effect !! Can you do it with Gimp or something other ? i don't have photoshop

  • @arnovanmassenhove

There is a masking software you can use called Bafran to do the same thing. I have some Bafran test videos. Go to my channel to check 'em out.

  • That is HARDCORE AWESOME. That takes a lot of dedication.

  • But what is that ball holder made of?

  • Why do you have to take pictures without the ball for every frame you shoot the ball? All the pictures without the ball are the same, so you just need one picture.

but of course if you change camera angle, zoom or change something on the camera, you need to take the pictures.

The one who made this, is, maybe... stupid or something

  • @Galentw Or maybe the one who made the comment without reading the last 3 comments is. ;-)

  • @0ldScratch why whould i want to read the last three comments

  • @Galentw Because they explain exactly why there's a picture without the ball for every frame.

  • @0ldScratch no they don't, they just say that if the camera mves or something you need to change pic but the camera didn't move so they don't explain it

  • @Galentw Stop trolling.

  • Comment removed

  • @Mani231290 what's "trolling"?

  • @Galentw LOL WTH?

  • you only need to take one picture of the back ground and use it for the rest of the masking. UNLESS you make the cammera pan or zoom/. I would reccomment getting bafran! Google it.

  • @Legofan78 Or unless you change the focus to follow the ball down the lane.

  • @0ldScratch oh yea - suppose that counts

  • can't you just take one picture without the ball and use it repeatedly?

  • @ummmkewler Sometimes stuff moves slightly, so maybe not, but you can give it a try :) (lol I know I'm not the tutorial guy!)

  • @ummmkewler Did I post that? Man, there's a lot of comments I post long ago that I think I wouldn't say.

  • Didn't have to take all those extra photos!Just take one blank pic, then re-used it,so much time saved

  • cool I wondered how OldScratch did that!!

  • @kikysaal old scratch is hurtinator

  • Kind of makes you want to shoot yourself in the head multiple times.

  • Really really great that you put so much effort into your work. Can't help thinking that After Effects' CC Sphere with a reflection map may have been a faster approach though :)

  • what holds the ball?

  • @julixjt Legos.

  • that is a very nice tutorial! i would have never done that for 2 reasons. i wouldn,t have figured out how to do that and i wouldn,t have bothered with that mush trouble! you are peristant! but why don't you only take one pic without the ball?

  • wow but what software do you use.Wow

  • i think adobe after effects or photoshop...

  • USE A STRING!!! (its better)

  • No it isn't shadow. Masking is better.

  • yeah, it just requires less time. :P

  • But masking looks more professional.

  • ya gatta point there Homer.

  • @shadowflame97 Not really, the string keeps moving around, and you can still see it.

  • I know, sooo much work for just a second of footage, it's crazy what some people will bring themselves to. Brilliant the effort you put it in.

  • there must be an easier way, but its sometimes good to use the brute force method. looked awesome

  • can u use any other system besides photoshop?

  • willzyx you ...

  • lol i do the same thing in gimp

  • hmm I'd like to know how he did the thingy that helps you move the ball...

  • GOOD GOD DUDE! That's awesome work!

  • what program did you use to erase the holding thing for the ball

  • go to 0:58 and WATCH THE FUCKIN VIDEO, DIPSHIT

  • how'd you make this i dont know how to mask or lay over a picture :(

  • whizzmaster; you have to click 'View' and then 'Tasks' and then 'Publish to computer' and it saves it again a different way.

  • what program do you do that in

  • adobe photoshop.

  • i know

  • That's just....WOW! AWESOME, and what a way to spend time xD

  • haha that one second was totally worth it. great job!!

  • tht was awlsume!!!!

    ima try ths!!!

  • that would take forever :(

Stop Motion film needs lot of patience and work.

  • im trying to make one, but youtube wont take the windows movie maker file. =(

i can always reocord it from the studio onto the camera and upload THAT tho!

    =)

  • Get sony vegas trial and photoshop trial and start to learn.

  • export it as a video file...

  • Comment removed

  • Just one question. Why the frame with no ball in between each one? Thx. :) (Good job btw)

  • i was thinking the same

  • i think it's so he could rub out the lego piece that was behind the ball

  • Actually it was already answered several times: He let's the focus follow the ball meaning that in the beginning the foreground is focused and in the end the background.

  • Cool

  • What's a good tutorial to teach me how to mask with photoshop?

  • cool!

  • wow that must have taken like forever

  • You could only do it in photoshop?

  • Unless you have another program that has that masking feature.

  • :( mine didnt turn out good:( it turned out all wierd and jumpy and not smoooth!!!

  • what kind of photoshop do u use? and what program do u use?? pm me plz

  • You could do it in any photoshop. All you do is put the frame with the ball on top, and the frame with the background on the bottom. Then you select the top layer and erase the rig, leaving the background showing through.

  • Comment removed

  • srry for asking how do you go on masking

  • If you have photoshop, it's a masking tool. You could probably get a tutorial from the internet, it's not hard if you have some familiarity with photoshop.

  • what exactly does masking do meaning how does it help?

  • It lets you have floating objects like he had in the finished shot silly :3

  • what program do u use to erase the stuff

  • wow. :)

  • how should i overlay

  • Oh... my...gosh... i would go crazy

  • i have an animation of a lego band that you could see (im only a beginner its my first eva animation) plz WATCH

  • o.. m... g! i might use this in my upcoming lego adventure

  • fancy meeting u on this video. lol i read ur comment before realizing it was u.

  • lol. will u be using this too in ur adventure if u make them jump or something?(tbw my video 'jumping minifig' used this)

  • prob. not i dont have photoshop :(

  • well i dont either, i use photo impact. it works with any similar programme and if u dont have any, just download some

  • oh ok. i might try that. hmmm. lol thanks for the tip.

  • Your welcome

  • I don't think its necessary to take a shot without the ball every time you move the ball. Because in reality you just taking the same shot over and over again for no reason, you only need one.

  • click "more info" above for the reason why I did it

  • I also think that, if he'd do it like you propose, he'd have troubles with the shadow of the moving ball.

  • Thanks for showing that! Very useful

  • For one second of video, that's only 24 frames. A total of 48 pictures - not all that time consuming really.

Try working at Aardman for a day!

  • I'm with Mcqwertyll. I'm a bit of an... ameture

  • does anyone know of a slightly less expensive software to do the masking..photoshop costs a bit much...

or should i just buck up and buy photoshop

  • I think the gimp does pretty much everything you need and it's free

  • is that what its called?

the gimp...is it like a downloadable file online or something?

  • go to gimp {dot} org and follow the instructions there

  • ok thanks

    :D

  • I manage to do a decent job on paint.

  • you can get 30 day free trials for photoshop to test it out if you want.

  • Oh, and in all the pictures withOUT the ball, how did you make the zoom change even though there was no ball in front?

  • I'm not sure you've understood what I'm doing here. I took a picture with the ball in the shot, making sure the ball was in focus. I then took the ball away and took another picture without changing any settings. Then I put the ball back, moved it a little bit, changed the focus, and took another picture. Repeat to fade.

  • Yeah, I figured that out a couple minutes after posting when I actually thought about it.

  • You did great job on this! (5*)

FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT A SHORTCUT(works sometimes)!

instead of seperatly overlapping each pic. and spending several minutes of erasing in paint, just make sure the piece is help up from exactly top/bottom/side (NOT behind). Then, in paint, erase everything from the propped edge and over, (using the large square deleting) THEN overlap it with the pic. without the object (no time-consuming cutting)

  • I really appreciate all the hours of eye-straining work you put into this short clip. And on top of all that, making a small tutorial. Major kudos to you.

  • Tedious and frustrating it can be. But at least it gives you great results!

  • Not something I would have thought of doing, but if you don't mind me asking, what was the purpose of taking a shot without the ball every time? Since there isn't a shadow being produced, and the camera was still, couldn't you have just used the same still shot of the lane over and over again for each frame?

  • hahaha im picturing hurtinator smashing his face into the desk repeatedly after realising this. no, he probably had a reason for it, maybe?

  • Well, the thing about balls is that they're round, so as long as you're careful, you can use the circle select tool and then invert the selection.

  • its in photoshop CS3,but he speeded up the video to make it more intersting

  • hey guys if youu want your stuff to be good you gotta work on it XD (damn i write like a god-damn drugdealer)

  • it doesnt matter if it was only for a second.this is why your video's are highly respected and awe'd at.theyre done down to the miniscular details.great work, really!

  • Eww, that's annoying.

  • Man that's incredible. All that work for such a small amount of film. Nice job.

  • what program do you use???

  • ... if you had actually READ the text in the vid you would have seen he used photoshop...

  • is this music from Amelie? well if it isn't it sounds like it should be

nice video! i was curious how that worked a bit

  • wow, what a hi-tech solution! i thought maybe there was a rod holding the ball up from behind or it was on a piece of glass or something.

  • Hmm, you probably only need 1 picture of the bowling hall (with not bowling), so why take so many pictures of the same bowling hall? Other than that, nicely done.

  • focus, perspective - I tried using stills and it didn't look right

  • im sorry you had to go through that but it paid off when you won the contest right?

  • wow !! very good video, but which software did you use??? plz mail meeee!!!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH! GREAT VID!!

  • what software do you use to make this

  • i respect you for the time and will you put into this, i wouldn't have enough patience. great job

  • Surely you only need one frame without the ball? Seeing as the camera doesn't move surely you would just use the same frame - no point in taking lots of photos of the same thing?

  • He explained that here:

'I took a separate shot of the background for each frame because, as the eagle-eyed will have noticed, the focus changes with each shot. If I'd just used a single background frame over and over, it would have looked like I'd pasted a picture of a receding bowling ball over a still picture of a bowling alley.'

  • Ah. The benifits of clicking "More"

  • Also the benefits of actually going to his website and seeing some of the "behind the scenes" stuff.

  • And of reading.

  • the ball wouldnt look like it was moving if you did that

  • well done, do you have a job?

  • Can you do this with paint?

  • pretty much not, no

  • I thought oldscratch made this

  • Oops I looked at your channel, you are Oldscratch. Sorry :)

  • he did make it hurtinator is the channel where old scratch does his tests

  • youd take forever

  • cool it even has a shadow

  • jajaajajaajaj cooollll

  • what type of photo shop because i just got photoshop element 6 and i can't find it

  • Photoshop 7. I'm pretty sure elements 6 has layers and masking options

  • Well maybe you figure this out since the post 3 months ago but...With photoshop elements you place both images in editor then while on front image on layers panel you right click then hit duplicate layer. A window then pops up and you can duplicate the layer to the background image. then got to background image with now has front on top and start erasing.

  • erm... how do you do the focus with a Panasonic NV-GS280 camcorder?

or did u use some software do focus it?

  • it has manual focus controls in the in-camera settings

  • What program u use?

  • what device do r u spost to use to mask it
