I watched this episode for the first time 45 years ago tonight. After the broadcast, I walked outside into a CA desert night,...and heard rocket engines being tested at Edwards AFB, miles away. I looked up at the stars and thought, "Damn, we've already begun the journey." Big thoughts for a 14-year-old kid.
@MrHoppers002 I still think we'll get there. Robert Heinlein (of all people) speculated in a 1952 essay that spaceflight could fall into disuse after early efforts, only to be revived eventually. It seems the old Grand Master saw further than the rest of us did. Again.
Man, I love this episode! And, hey, there's this free and legal way to view Star Trek episodes! Just go to "shows" on the top bar! (By the way, I made it look like one of those spam ad's. I have seen the episode and it was awesome. Star Trek FTW!)

I wish I was about 35ish when this started. so i could have been on it and been a love interest for Spock...or Kirk if Spock decided to be stubborn.
if i was lucky, i might have been able to get to know Leonard Nimoy, instead of just being one of the millions of fans that are almost all the same

Fucking amazing dialogue. I wish I was alive when this was airing. I kind of feel like I missed out on the whole phenomena of Star Trek.
