initially i thought what the learner did wrong! but then noticed learner switched lanes when the motorcycle was taking up position :) i like your cam though some clear images.
Having returned to the UK after some time away I was pretty well surprised at the number of people using their mobile phones whilst driving! I observed in the region of ~20% drivers using their phones in a slow-moving traffic stream. There needs to be a strong campaign like the "Clunk Click" seat belt type.
We need a campaign to stop mobile phones being used while driving. Engine ON phone OFF The company I work for have this policy, but if it stops an accident or worse then bring it on.
Stastics bit. Using a mobile phone while driving, hands free or not is equilivant to being two and a half times over the drink drive limit.
1:10 - Ignoring the laws for a second - I think people are capable of using a mobile phone, or adjusting their gps device for example, while in *stationary* traffic, as long as they halt all use and make the required safety checks before moving off again. Not to say that this will happen - he'll probably keep texting while driving.. :(
@pazzainit A motorcycle leans as it goes round a corner, the camera was near the white line but my wheels were 2 feet to the left. As an advanced rider I use all the lane I need and at no point did I cross the line. Do you ride a motorcycle by the way or does it have a sidecar? lol
Also, going to the 2nd clip (?) where you say the rider should have anticipated the U turn on the mini roundabout, although maybe the driver didnt do anything "wrong", i believe its daft to do such a maneouver on those little round abouts. So i would have blamed the driver not the rider (i dont ride motorbikes). The roundabout in the vid is a little bigger than most, but no one generally anticipates a manouver as its not the best place to do it.
@gaz10101 You're right about the driver but unfortunately it does happen and experience will help the rider anticipate it. Even thought it may not legally be our fault, with the right anticipation we may stay alive. Thanks for your comment.
@RoadcraftNottingham "May not legally be our fault"? The driver was 100% completely in the wrong and made a dangerous maneuver by pulling a virtual U-turn without indicating. Watching the vid, I was expecting the driver to simply take the 2nd exit not chop across for the 3rd exit.
@NinjaButler1 The indicator was on, the camera didn't pick it up. ...and you're right, she should have really gone round the paint. The problems I get on lessons are the pupils expecting the driver to do the right thing like you've just said, like taking the 2nd exit. The bottom line would be us in hospital with them apologising which isn't acceptible so we need to be careful, leave our safety in our own hands only and anticipate the worst. Thanks for commenting.
I believe driving standards have dropped considerably over the years. What makes it worse is the number of instructors who dont seem to either drive (when not on a lesson), or their students doing something wrong or not doing something they should be when on a lesson, yet the instructor isnt telling them otherwise. Prime example was the last clip on the vid.
Just noticed on the last clip where the white car drifts back over to the right hand lane, the pupil in front of you drifted left into that lane too and I didn't see an indicator flashing on his bike. I was wondering if perhaps all of you should have moved into that lane a lot earlier and not after the bend? Traffic allowing of course, because it looks kind of busy there!
@elkfazer1 I normally do move over a little earlier if clear but at 2:43 you'll see the red car I'm waiting for to see what he does first. The camera doesn't pick up how clearly the learner car moved into his lane then made a sudden, sharp move to lane 2. Even the driving instructor apologised. As I went by I acknowledged him. It's normally wise there to see what lane 1 is doing first there. Difficult one.
@NurdDesigns I use the Vio pov HD on 720p - 60FPS setting. They're not cheap at nearly £500. You'd get a great result with the Gopro Hero2 on the same settings.
Hello from the U.S. great videos, great learning experience watching them!! I tend to see many people driving their cars and texting on their mobiles or reading directions all day everyday!! @Hrothgar66 Hello USA. I couldn't believe when I went to L.A almost EVERYONE was using a cell phone. Research suggests it can be more dangerous than being drunk, texting is worse still as the driver's eyes are off the road completely! Thanks for the compliments and stay tuned for more shaming. :-)
I really like these videos. When the student and learner car nearly came together neither were indicating, would you have suggested to your student to indicate?
@ridernew19 There's no harm in indicating but in this case the driver had committed to the left lane and suddenly changed back to lane 2, therefore he didn't look in the first place so wouldn't have seen the indicator (the helmet cam didn't pick up how clear and sharp this move was)
It's great that people like you film this, the police should have a website where you can upload this sort of stuff, but then they probably don't have the resources to deal with it. For those complaining about privacy, if you decide to drive on public roads then sorry you aren't entitled to any privacy, especially when everyone's safety is at stake. If you want privacy then drive on private land.

You could make a CD or DVD of this kind of stuff with the amount of riding you do throughout the day. What should you call it though? Hmm, "Now that's what I call bad driving 15" 'All your favourite hits (hopefully not real ones) on one DVD.
@elkfazer1 Hehehehe, Imagine the voice over for the advert "...and who can forget this classic...man on phone, and remember this one....woman cuts you up... " lol
@RoadcraftNottingham Haha, yeah, I can just imagine it now. I think you should do one though with your own voice, after all, you've got the microphone ;-)
I think with all the moves to slow traffic flow over the years, people have become more easily distracted and the general standard of driving has fallen dramatically as a result. When I was despatching I'd expect the occasional close-call, but I wouldn't want to be earning my living on the road now, there's muppets everywhere. Good vid, Russ.
Anticipation is really the key for survival. Can't say for UK, never rode there. But here in Italy the behavior you filmed is rather a standard. So for instance I never overtake a car in a curve or when we are merging in parallel mostly he will cut me. Let alone texters ....
At 2.22 the rider was a bit too hidden close to the kerb but I guess at the learning stage thats where they are advised to be, that last one was crazy like the car appeared to be changing to the left lane and re took the lane he was in, Those lines on certain r/bouts can be confusing to most folk, tread with caution being the word I guess.
Texting man I see it all the time and dodged many a texter and it drives me crazy, great video and it really shows what we face daily, nice one
@2wheelsteve Thanks buddy, agreed, It's difficult when doing test training for mod 2 to tell the pupil to stay out on a bend as the DSA have a different standard unfortunately and he would possibly fail for position during normal riding. I have to teach 2 different styles on mod2 and advanced which seems hypocritical to me. Thanks for your comment (and don't forget to sub ;-) )
@kaiser9100 No point doing that, It's probably his own business anyway. Let's just hope he realises being on the phone is illegal for a reason. People do get injured.

There are some stupid people out there for sure, that learner in the car on the last one really was the instructors fault as they should have gone through the lane changing drill with them, unless of cours it was a test, in which case they should have failed!
Funny one of your comments about a pupil being in an accident, when I learnt back in the early 90's I was sat at a roundabout with a car coming so unable to go, yet still my instructor ploughed in the back of me, sending me down the road!
@MrPeterJMilner Agreed, it's the instructor's fault, he should have anticipated the learner's actions. It WAS an instructor, not test. I've also heard of other instructors, and one bike examiner hitting pupils up the rear end. It's our job to expect the pupil to make these mistakes.
I think U-Turning on those little roundabouts (anything without a non-mountable physical island) should be illegal. That kinda thing will get someone killed.
@AnFonE That's a fair point actually (my Volvo wouldn't physically do the U turn there anyway lol) It's a hard thing to work out if they're turning right or U turning.
Loved the reaction of the driver at 1:15. Out of interest Russ; have you ever had a pupil involved in a collision due to stupid drivers like the examples here.
@LazyDaysRider Funny seeing their reactions isn't it? lol Yes, I've had pupils involved in a few accidents, this is why I always have the camera running now because the motorist always counter claims AFTER the event. Have a look at 2:45. This is a classic example, the rider is banked over, then grabs the front brake, making his front end break away, most accidents happen like this. Luckily, this rider was more experienced.
initially i thought what the learner did wrong! but then noticed learner switched lanes when the motorcycle was taking up position :) i like your cam though some clear images.

Another interesting video. Would have helped out if the car driver in the second clip had actually gone round the roundabout instead of cutting in.
