I just made a program in C to make that, it's works pretty well. It takes any type of file and convert it to a .wav 8-bits stereo at 22050hz. And yeah, mspaint and other programs gave interesting result, like explorer.exe. The size and the data type matters. Lot of fun!

That sounds kind of interesting actually.

I think one rational explanation for the "music" is that like any modern program, MSPAINT.EXE has a lot of icons and images inside it (various formats) and what you're hearing is each "version" of the image.

You might import a DLL with lots of icons and see what it sounds like (I suggest SHELL32.DLL).

This also reminds me of my youthful days when I used to take DOS games and import their files to see what they sound like :)

I tried importing the paint.exe (Win7 Ultimate x64, if that matters), in multiple ways, in Audacity and WaveLab as well... the sound is rather gibberish - it is more like the background radiation you hear on the radio...
