  • I wonder how well this beautiful piece of hardware would handle Ape Escape...

  • The game range that this handheld can run is huge.

  • Please zod. Do not make people pay for donations to get the Emus again. At least just SELL the emus, do not weasel your way around with the "please donate" shit. It was really annoying and I felt like you'r weasling around taxes for selling software.

  • wow 2097 is ridiculously slow ,is there any point in playing that with those sorts of speeds.you could even see slowdown on the battle scenes in ff7 .bit of a disappointment

  • Awesome but how come Pandora emulates smoothly PS1 and not Dreamcast if Playstation is more powerful?

  • The Dreamcast was lightyears more powerful than the Playstation. How the hell could you not know that based on generation alone?

  • @HardKore5250

Haha, don't make me laugh. The Playstation 2 is more powerful than the Dreamcast, not the original PlayStation.

  • Eh that's still debatable. PS2 has almost no real features (the lack of anti-aliasing is obvious) and it has shit for texture memory.

There was a good possibility with employing some tricks a lot of late generation Dreamcast games would have looked like early Xbox games.

In fact Jet Set Radio Future and Sega GT 2002 were straight ports from the Dreamcast switched over to Xbox at the last second. Counterstrike DC pushes more polygons in many of it's scenes than even Halo.

  • Because it's all the opposite way, Dreamcast was more powerful.

Also, you gotta understand that emulating a console isn't just a matter of sheer power. The "power" of a console is just an abstract concept that ultimately means nothing. Every console has a different architecture, with different hardware, as different processors, memories, hardware structure and different software subroutines.

Some consoles with odd architectures like Saturn can be very hard to emulate even if not "powerful".

  • Ok,ok,ok...maybe I'll buy one,one day if I can find one (and have money to)

  • Yeah Jumping Jack Flash on the go!

  • and n64?

  • yeah, cool,I'm reday to buy one tomorrow but there's one problem (same problem as psp) there's only 2 triggers and not 4. (dualshocks have 4 triggers L1,L2,R1 and R2) Thanx to them to thought to put 2 analog cliquable sticks but they miss 2 triggers and I think pandora isn't completely perfect.

  • Well.. nothing is perfect, buy something for what it is and for what you think it's worth.

Pandora wasn't nessecarily built for psx emulator, but it's great that it runs full speed on it. There aren't 4 triggers on it, but I'm sure with all the other buttons there's some kind of way to work it out.

  • yeah, if the psp can manage, im sure this monster can as well.

  • well just make your own portable arm 6 device and you can put four triggers on that.

  • @willix2

This is fairly late but you could just buy a usb controller...

  • @willix2 USB - PSX controllers supported.. so buy it :P

  • I cant wait to get my n900 and start playing FF

  • Damn I really want to get one of these system but I'll have to wait ti'll the second batch unforetunately but I still got a psp some Im happy for now.

  • Gotta love Wipeout :)

  • i bet FFVII looks fine with different settings. how's the interface for this emulator? did i miss a demo thereof?

  • song? i liked it

  • does this this thing have its own games not just emulation?

  • It will once it comes out, probably. Zeq2lite and Quake 3 will have ports, and there's a few projects starting to make original games for it.

  • yeah i know. and the government is starting to get rid of roms. I hope they make somthing

  • With the Pandora you won't have Sony constantly attempting to sabotage your homebrew pleasures. Maybe it has gotten better since I sold my PSP, but I picked the GP2X over it without thinking twice, adn the Pandora is a MUCH better system than my F-100. The only down side of my GP2X is that the PS1 games run at unplayable speeds. 64GB should be enough to keep me happy with all the PSX Final Fantasies. Grandia, Star Ocean, Legend of Mana and so many more.

  • I have been playing all my psx games for months now on my PSP xD

By the time I get my pandora I will probably be bored with the PSX games :P

  • the fact of the matter is, Pandora has higher capabilities than any other portable gaming system at the moment, along with all the features that they have like Wi-Fi, but it comes with so much more, like 2 SD card slots to hold a lot of homebrew apps, games, movies, music, emu's, the lot.

  • And the argument that the PSP fanboys are putting out about the fact that they have a community that far succeeds the Pandora's is a benefit of course, but on of the greatest thing about the Pandora is that it has a dedicated, tight knit community, with everyone helping out where they can. Now can you really say that about the PSP and it's fan base?

  • Im really looking forward to playing N64, SNES, GBA, MEGADRIVE, PS1 and (maybe) Dreamcast games in this huge console..

  • PSP is coming too

  • Just get a Psp! =_= !!!

  • and what use would that be?

  • Playing PSX games at fullspeed u nerd.

  • With bad screen scalling and half of the games not working properly ??

  • what are u talking about ? Maybe you are just a too huge noob to get them work properly.

  • Can I use desktop applications on a psp?

Can I play game from other consoles on a psp?

Can I run almost any opensource application that can be compiled for ARM on a psp?

Is the psp the most advanced mini-netbook with gaming controls and tv-out?

  • Lol. N64, Snes, Nes, Megadrive, Mastersystem, Gameboy advance.

And those are just a few.

It got gaming controlls and a tv out put.

you nerd, this thing is not even released yet, and it probably will never be xD

Psp pwns this thing by far.

  • when was the last time you saw someone running firefox 3 on a psp? or using a touch screen, keyboard, and full bluetooth capabilites...

  • I wish this console was as cool as u say it is.

But its not even released yet.

And the psp got a great Amiga and N64 emulator with big communities behind them to push the developement further. I just dont see the pandora community to bis this huge yet :/

  • psp community ftw, who cares if it cant run firefox 3. who cares if it dont have touch screen or keyboard, it wasnt meant for that. its not a mini comp. its a portable gaming system that is prob the best out of the whole portable gaming community. Its powerful and has alot of potential, the community is great, the emulators are endless, and so are the homebrew, original square games. now when are we gunna see a non emulated sqaure original on the pandora.

  • You are so damn right. Projects like Daedalusx64. com make me believe that the PSP can do so much people never thought possible.

  • shall we make a comparison?

pandora = nes snes doom123, quake123, psx, GBA, full deskop office enviro, touch screen, keyboard, real game nubs, linux OS, PSX, possible dreamcast, possible Quake 4, the list is endless

PSP? = PSX, and overpriced PSP games

  • How about the hundrests other psp homebrew games and emulators?

And the new N64 Emulator on the Psp?

Plus: This thing is not even released yet!

  • the thing is...

The PSP isn't designed for that stuff, whereas Panda is.

We'd rather have a small community, it makes it feel we're a more select type. I'm the only one i "know" who's getting one.

  • The real comparison?

Psp: Amiga, GBA, PSP, PSX, SNES,PSX,N64, possible dreamcast, Megadrive, Mastersystem,SNES,Homebrewgames, can fit in a pocket, easy to buy (in any store), huge community, many emulators have been worked on for several years and much much more ;).

  • The PSP can emulate every console the Pandora can and the PSX games are flawless. The Pandora is just a prototype fantasy.

  • but the psp is big and bulky while the pandora is smal and slick and can play quake 3.

  • well the pandora can still do more stuff and it gott a touch screen.

  • Oh really? Lets see you try and buy one then.

  • toché

  • Hmm but this pocket screwdriver is even smaller than the PSP Go. Of course, it doesn't have a USB port and SDHC slot..

  • The Pandora actually takes up more volume than the PSP :P

  • cool

  • One great feature of the Pandora is watching Divx movies. So, I will be able to take mine 'round a friends house and plug it straight into his TV and watch a film.

Or if I brought along a couple of gamepads, we could play 2 player SNES Mario Kart etc on the big screen.

On top of all that it's a tinkerers dream machine - see what software you can get running on it, MythTV frontend maybe..?

This device fits my needs perfectly - can't wait to start playing with mine!

  • Some odd balls cometing on here stating the Pandora will fail. The first batch sold out 6 months ago. Theirs a huge que.

It is far more powerfull than any other handheld.

Can take SD cards which load far faster than PSP games.

it is partly designed to run the trilions of emulators and free game roms already available on the net.

Dont compare it to a laptop you cant put a laptop in your pocket.

  • Ha ha none of us care what you think.

    How pathetic.

  • yeah really, i wish these lifeless morons get a life

  • no sound, eh?

  • The pandora rocks, gaming controls a powerfull ARM CPU! Man I can´t wait for mine!

  • Do you know when the Pandora will be coming out. Also do you know if it can run a ds, psp, ps1,ps2 emulators. Can it play movies. How much RAM does it have and how many gigs is the maximum that it can hold if I use sd cards.

  • Use your favorite search-engine.

  • maximum in gigs is 64 in SD cards because it supports SDHC, the pandora will ship between August-November of 2009,it can play movies(in div x) and TV shows if their on the SD card or your using the internet on it, and it can play everything below a ps1 (including N64) and maybe a psp and dreamcast emulator.

  • This is the next handheld I'm gonna get. :)

  • Does anybody know the name of the song played in the background?

  • Some people are comfortable living in the past. Look at hippies, for example.

  • "these open source handhelds are wasting their time and hardware"

Obviously not since they've already sold out the first batch...

    "Emulators have no future."

You obviously haven't realized thes devices can do much more than emulators.

Check your facts before running into an argument, it saves everyone a lot of time.

  • Well said. Plus who doesnt want to play old Tekken, Crash, Spyro, Final Fantasy, AirCombat, Millions of sports games, Tomb Raider and thats just PS1 games... There are lots of classic gaes that are better than their modern counterparts

  • Open Source Handhelds are the future.

    1. It's not locked-down like all the other portable gaming systems... You don't have to "hack" it. It's Linux.

    2. It's Linux. You can use linux programs on it, like open office or instant messengers such as pidgin, media players, web browsers, any other linux application you can think of...

    3. It can run linux software? How about wine, or a virtual machine, or a dedicated counter-strike server? LOL

  • No, the Pandora can't run WINE, actually.

Well, you could, but it wouldn't work since all Windows programs are compiled for x86.

  • I'm still getting one when they release this next version... now that I know about it, I wouldn't even think of getting any other handheld game system, it would just feel like I'm settling for second best... See because for me, it's not all about the games, plus on proprietary handheld game systems, you can only play -games- and on top of it, you can only play games made specifically for it... But that's my favorite thing about OPEN pandora, you can do whatever you want on it... Not just games..

  • The Pandora is going to be weird for game development, in a good way.

With older handheld systems, you program with an SDK that runs on a desktop, then you run it in emulation, then you use some special way [maybe a re-writable cartridge, maybe a transfer cable] to play it on the handheld.

With the Pandora, you write it, compile it, and run it on the handheld. It's way easier than doing homebrew for anything else.

  • I think that you need to forgot about point 3 ;]

  • The Pandora has an identity crisis. It doesn't know what it wants to be. UMPC? Game system? Pocket pc? Ebook reader (Kindle like). I can not think of a single do-it-all machine that has succeeded. The Pandora is designed for a very small user base so it will probably make money, but I don't suspect they will ship as many systems as Gamepark did with the gp2x. Not everyone has $400 to shell out for it. If I was going to spend that, I'd get a EEE. I know it's bigger, but that is what I would get.

  • The Pandora is basically a mini-laptop with game controls. It's already perfectly suited for general PC stuff and portable media. The gaming is sort of a "well, we gave it really good hardware, so why not?" and the e-book thing is totally secondary. I mean, you can read e-books on any PC.

  • I dont get why you would buy one of these when you can get a net-top with a 1.6ghz processor, 1G RAM, and 160 GB HDD for 300$..

..sure a net-top is a bit smaller..like a book.. but you get a hell of alot more power, and memory for the same price

Btw, im a noob to "emulation" and "homebrew".. wtf is it? explain plz?

  • I don't get why you compare a nettop (i.e. small desktop computer, volume around 3 litres) with a rather smaller portable device. Sounds like you're referring to netbooks, but correct me if i'm wrong.

Counter your noobness, start using google, wikipedia.

  • Well, to be fair, the acer one aspire is nowhere near as small as a pandora. It isn't a handheld.

  • As I said, it is a bit bigger, but I would think it is a good trade off given the amount of software and compatibility you will get by getting an Aspire One. The Pandora is a great project, but you can do better with your dollar and get a true computer with excellent gaming capabilities (at least compared to the Pandora).

  • Sorry but pandora is not bigger than psp and has gaming controls .

  • So does the psp, where is your point?

The Pandora is a great piece of hardware but nearly every single thing on it is a compromise. There is a market for this kind of device, but I don't think it's a very big market. It's also priced too high. There are quite a few machines that are almost as powerful but available at almost 1/2 the price.

I have known these guys (not personally) for years on gp32x and I hope they succeed but I really think they missed the mark on price.

  • Keyword:"almost", they may be 1/2 the price but they are triple the size. So, i would rather have a portable Pandora, snug in my pocket, then have a huge laptop in a carrying bag.

  • @wootlanter no its a netbook, that iswhat a pandora is, just smaller and a controller built in

  • im sorry, but an acer aspire one will not play as many games as this can, it may have more ram, and a better cpu, but the Pandora has a much smaller screen, which means less pixels need to be rendered by the gpu, which means a Pandora, although not as powerful is better for gaming simply because it has a smaller, lower resolution screen

  • Good luck with your acer ;]

  • 200 itsent bad

  • I never said the Wiz is more powerful. I simply said I like it better. And 179.99 is cheaper than 300.00. I didn't say the Wiz was cheap. You people need to work on your interpretation skills.

  • You must be microsoft or some stupid DRM company saying that... 200,- is actually cheap if you compare it with closed apps and games you need to buy for a "cheaper" system.

    How about that!

  • also, 200£...

    compare to everything else:

it's better buying a Pandora that emulates most old Console system and maybe PSP than buying all the consoles in one hand, it's much more cheap

you must really be right, this guy must be a DRM company, otherwise he wouldn't've made such a stupid and pointless comment

but I'm disappointed with this dev: it's an ARM card! that's not that strong... if Ben could switch that card with a PS2 one... Linux would be perfect for it

    Pandora rules

  • Well, as long as you're happy with yourself, that's all that matters.

  • so you're defending the wiz....which you do not have yet?

  • so you're defending the pandora...which you do not have yet?

  • o you're bashing the Pandora... Which you did not even test yet?

  • When most people are unable to test a system, they usually have no other choice for judging it. Even when it's on sale, they're still going to criticize it even if they haven't played it. It's not a pleasant fact, but it's true.

  • I'm going to go ahead and sort of... disagree with you, there.

The Wiz only has 64 MB of memory to the Pandora's 256, and the screen is only 320 x 240 versus the Pandora's 800 x 480.

For what I intend to do with it, the Pandora appears to be superior.

Of course, neither are shipping yet...

  • I think that high res screen is a drawback. Many of us gp32/2x owners use it for emulation of old game systems, all of which have low res screens. Pandora will be nice for amiga/arcade/snes/dos and others that perfect emulation is not available on thegp2x, but they all have low res screens which is going to mean black bars on most of the screen. Even the PSX only runs at a max of 640x480 (or something) and most games not even that much. The Pandora doesn't know what it wants to be.

  • Ever heard of stretch to fit

  • Stretch to fit looks terrible if it is in any ratio beside 1:2. An exact doubling (in both directions) looks fine, but partial stretches don't.

  • I'm with you (in that I'm going to buy a wiz). The Pandora has priced itself out of my market. I just can't justify a $400 toy right now (and make no mistake, that is what it is). I have no desire to surf the web on such a small screen. The only thing I would like about it is its ability as an ebook reader. But I have my $5.00 iPaq 3650 (ebay) that works great as a book reader in any light with it's front lit reflective color screen and makes a great mp3/video player besides. Even plays games.

  • If you give up on everything, nothing gets done.

  • and on top of that it doesn't look that slow

  • keep up the good work.

  • with few updates this emu will be killer.

  • Amazing! I Can't wait for my pandora to arrive! Thanks zodttd! What is the name of the music playing btw?

  • Okay I reviewed the older videos, and it was faster. What did you change ? Did you add a frame limiter (does it work correctly ?) ?

  • the older videos certainly show a faster emulator. what happened?

  • Sorry to say that, but FF7 seems to be REALLY slow during the battles. Maybe you did not notice, but I'm sure that the animation is supposed to be much faster. I mean you can see it clearly in the video when the enemy is attacking cloud.. You say it's due to the scaling function etc., I believe you but I really would like to see a video without that rotation/scaling to compare the speed (as you actually proposed it on the board), if that's possible ?

Anyway, keep the good work !

  • How do we know it's on the pandora?

  • See my account. I tried to post the link but it seems to have disappeared. I guess links are not allowed.

  • It could be a dev board, many developers have already received them...

  • zodttd has no reason to fake anything he is a highly capable dev in the iphone community as well

  • wtf! what an incredibly harsh comment

  • nice to see more videos of the pandora running to bridge the time till release :)

Whenever you're bored, you could show us some other games being emulated, like

Gran Tourismo or Colin McRae 2

    Valkyrie Profile

    Tomba! (2)

    Silhouette Mirage

    Nightmare Creatures

if you own the respective copies *cough*

Or maybe someone has better suggestions ^^

    Greetings from Germany

  • Wow. Will you be adding filters or plug ins, ie.(pete's epxe plug ins)when the video hardware drivers become available. Is it possible?

  • ohyeah ive preordered mine in germany on the 2nd of october woohoo!

  • I pre-ordered mine 3 hours after notification went out. Looking forward to it! You Pandora devs have done an amazing job.

  • awesome!! cant wait to order my Pandora for FF7

  • why not a psp?? you can run FF7 on it and its more cheap

  • It's too proprietary, has no touch screen, is computationally much weaker, screen isn't protected by the clamshell, etc.

  • lol, proprietary: Linux? You must use windows

  • I do use Linux.

I was saying that's why I hate the PSP, because it's too locked-down.

  • I think he meant the PSP is too proprietary.

  • Also, I tried to run FF7 on a PSP and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get the PS emulator running and even then I found the game would keep locking up.

  • I have too wait till next year for mine. So its good to see that the devs are making good things. Great Job, cant wait till I can try it out.

  • I hate when dumb shits comment without knowing any facts. this looks amazing zod , just wait until its running on the hardware. any chance of crash bandicoot 3 in the video?

  • Read the author's comments. The reason why it is running slow is that he has to rotate and scale the video for this video (which will be unnecessary with the actual Pandora hardware). It already runs more than full speed without rotating and scaling, and that's only using software acceleration (just wait to see how good it is when OpenGL is implemented).

  • Final Fantasy seemed a tad choppy, but full speed. :D

Wipeout, however, seems to be running a bit slow. Are you using the 3D hardware yet?

  • I don't think ;)

  • hey zod, nice vid, lol

  • Excellent! I'll be one of your donators soon

  • Is this using 3D hardware yet?

  • my proposition for next showcase are [ the biggest international hits on psx ]: 3d: syphon filter / tekken / mgs / ridge racer 4 / 2d: raiden / worms / anything you have :) will be good. Please dont make FF7 again [ we have 3 videos about it , now ]

BTW. i ve seen a little slowdowns in wipeout and slo'mo in vagrant. Is Psx4Pand is running on performance mode or accurate mode?

  • Just AWESOME!!!

I'm so excited to have it!!

  • FF7 runs fine. It was just wipeout running slow. When I send my build to EvilDragon (he wasnt around the past day or two?) as Jerry mentioned I should, the performance should be even better.

  • Looks great! PSX4GP2X excited me, but this really makes me ready for my pandora to get to my doorstep. Is it just me or is FF7 running a bit slower than the other videos? Anyways I'm faithful that this will be great.

  • catchy tune? where did you get that from?

Nice work on the emulator btw, nice to here that there is much room for optimizations =)

  • Have you considered sending the build to EvilDragon since he has a nice HD camera to make videos? Could you also elaborate on why it is necessary to rotate and scale the screen (not too much information is available to us on the nature of your dev kit as it wasn't really shown in your videos and I don't recall seeing any pictures or anything)? From your comment it looks like the screen is non-standard?

  • My rotation code is VERY slow. Gaining about 1/3rd more speed is within reach without the need for it. I will look at Wipeout more carefully though and see why it's running behind other games. What's weird is I remember it running so smooth when recording. I hope the video isn't just going slow! I can hardly wait to get a more up to date devkit and use the 800x480 screen without the need for rotation! In the meantime I will share my build with someone to make a better running video. :)

  • Just noticed Wipeout 2097, the speed looks more like a good 1/3 slower than real hardware, am hoping for a real speed improvement like you say

  • Great stuff Zod, always nice to know you are actively working on the Pandora still!

  • I just noticed Wipeout XL is going just a tad under fullspeed in this video. While I'm at stock speeds, I have the video currently rotated and scaled, which takes time to perform therefor slowing down the emulation. Soon I wont need to do at very least the rotation of the video output. So even though it is at stock speed, it is actually running slower in this video than it would if it were a release build.

  • I'm very excited as well! Btw, this video doesnt show the emulator outputting sound. I will try to get a better video out with sound in place. The performance difference with what was implemented is minimal, and not a factor. I also was controlling the games with two fingers while recording, hence the odd movements. :)

  • I'm excited
