There is another extreme though... I've listened to a lot of progressive music over the years, and some of it can become so eratic that it's not tastful anymore, and amounts to a big talent show.
I think people who are really objective will agree to that, and some will just respond with, "Well, you're just not intelligent enough to apreciate it [the fringe]."
This stuff I'm hearing here, for example, is tasteful.

Hi's kinda rigth. I didd't know what a Chapstic was, before i saw Liquid Tension Experiment life.
And just had to get one myself... just a litte problem with that instrument. Its hard as hell to play:P

oldwise, if it is because of the weird tuning (IMO), do what i do: tune it to parallel fourths,uncrossed.
