  • i dont like the movie - so different than the book :(

  • this movie defintely matches with coldplay song princess of china if u guys ever hear song u'll know wat i mean even though geisha is invented and is excisted in japan lol! it should of been princess of japan but wateve it still matches concept

  • this movie is really touching!

  • subtitles? lool

  • this is a beautiful movie

  • 'A story like mine should never be told...' - gives me goosebumps everytime >_<

  • I really shouldn't have watched the movie right after I finished the book. So much is changed. It's quite depressing. Not to say I don't love the movie, but I have to force myself to forget the book to truly enjoy the movie.

    Thanks for the upload!

  • is this in english? loljk. y u mad?

  • Where's Bobby Lee ...

  • @mucciardi73 Lol,he'd make the best geisha ever.I miss him on MadTV.

  • I better enjoy this while I can before lame SOPA ruins it.

    Goodnight :) & I loveeee this MOVIE!

  • good movie but they got the year and her b day wrong in the book shes the year of the monkey and on the movie shes the rooster i should know im the year of the monkey and i read the book and though it was kool she was the sam date as me and the age is wrong to

look it up if u dont belive me

  • I think its cool that the girl that plays Chiyo doesnt speak a lick of English. she had no idea what she was actually saying!!

  • I'm reading the book right now and I just got to the point where she just met with Auntie and Nother and Granny, but boy did they skip a lot!

  • if i was her mom i would be so pissed

  • EU ASSISTIR AO FILME E AGORA LEIO O LIVRO, É ESPETÁCULAR, FASCINANTE.

  • @starchips231 i read the book and saw the movie, he wants to sell both of them but when chiyo and satzu go to the okiya they only want chiyo so satzu becomes a prostitute

  • What they are saying in the very beginning is pretty irrelevant considering you know what they were talking about by their actions later on. :3

  • @FallingMiyuki i've seen this movie before and if i remember correctly, one is the girls father and he is talking to the guy about selling one of the girls....or is it both?

  • @starchips231 I think both...Chyio and Satzu

  • I cant read the sub title :(

  • why did they change her year from the monkey in the book to the roster in the film?

  • ugh no subtitles

  • Probably one of the most amazing movies AND books I've ever read. <3 I never get tired of watching or reading it.

  • If a Geisha is a kind of prostitute, then that is the most graceful and beautiful way of doing it. That would make it the only kind of prostitution I admire.

  • @Catskywatcher113005 Well, to the West, a Geisha would probably be considered no different then a Courtesan. However, in Japanese culture a Geisha is more equivallent to a Western trophy wife. Geishas were trained in music, singing and dancing, serving, conversation, etc. Sex was actually a very small part of the Geisha life.

  • dear ronniemonnie, I love you for posting this movie online. I Was actually contemplating buying it tomorrow, and I probably still will if I can find it, because good quality films deserve to be bought.

  • @notnsanetoothpick

Buying the deluxe set is worthwhile because there is a lot of background information on how the movie was made (the commentary tracks). For instance, Hatsumomo was based on a late 1700's, not 1930's geisha to emphasize her fiery individuality or the great lengths the set designer went through to use genuine wood on the sets or why the director/designers would veer away from historically correct because of technical problems. It is quite a lesson in movie making.

  • @AQuietNight that is a good point; I'll keep that in mind. But I didn't see it when i went shopping the other day :o

  • Why is this a video response to Lonely Island anything? lol. (Awkward...)

  • I have the whole movie on DVD

  • I love this movie and the book

  • this is my absolute favorite film of all time.... and ive only watched it once. xD

  • I suggest everyone read the book too! :)

  • love this film so musch! <3

  • I can never get tired of this movie.<3

  • Gaah! Im I the only one that finds it annoying that they are not speaking Japanese!! They should have just subtitiled in English..runins the feeling of the movie a bit!!

  • @MsSall90 Because the book was in english.. the book was amazing :D lol

  • @tnuoccAebutuoY3 I see..thanks alot ;)

  • @MsSall90 There Is One In Japanese On Youtube

  • I'm not surprised.. that i decided to watch the movie. after. reading d book. Most of d scenes r as i imagined.

  • ........no subs.....SHIT!!

  • THANK YOU FOR DA UPLOAD!!

  • first time I heard of this film i thought it was called "memoirs of a gay shark"..

  • 506,000th view

  • I love the way they say Can Not instead of can't and the way the speak, it's so beautiful. This is like my favorite movie of all time.

  • @vincenthusky you ate honey and said it tasted bitter...a foul mouth from a foul mind...

  • For those of you who do not know, the father in the beginning is Mako Iwamatsu. He's a well known japanese actor and voice actor, such as the role of Uncle Iroh from Avatar, The last Airbender and Splinter from TMNT.

R.I.P, Mako, you will be missed!

  • @KrystelLucas Oh my goodnes! :o Thank you! Cause i would have been frustrated trying to figure out who he was. Yes, R.I.P. Mako, he was amazingly epic!

  • wasnt she year of the Monkey in the book?

  • omg... this is sayuri's theme!!!@ about 4:00.... XDD

this so sad... i downloaded this theme!

  • is this a movie about prostitution

  • @Vincenthusky No geisha are aboslutely in now way prostitutes, they are artists and performers they do not sell themselves. Read the book

  • lol at 00:47 I asked in thought " is it in English?" lol and then the red box saying " the movie is in english, im tired of people askin" came up lol

  • read the book twice~ thought i might try the movie now :DDDD

  • ive been looking for this movie for the longest time i watched when i was little and fell in love with it cant get enough of this movie

  • Where is the girl sister

  • Satsu was sold to a home in the Miyagawa-Cho distict to become a prostitute. It wasn't revealed to Chiyo until after she was beaten and Hatsumomo told her.

  • Beautiful book, beautiful movie.

  • @coconutlass I like Nobu in the movie waaay better though. He is a lot more honorable, especially in the way he got his scars

  • 3:33 Wanyudo :))

  • i read the book XD

  • Awesome.. Thankks for uploading!

  • i understand everything hatsumomo does ...

  • ive read the book and watched the movie many times each time i tried keeping an open mind also in the book she gives a fair enough explaination why geishs"s arent whores but i cant think otherwise infact i think its a elite whoredom trade i see no honorr in selling ur daughter and submitting girls to having a price on their virginity rather than giving it to someone they love and KNOW!! i dnt mean to be rude sorry if i am :(

  • @leeks1991 I understand your point and I can only take my "facts" on geishas from this film and little other sources but -> geisha's aren't whores BECAUSE they don't sell their bodies. They literally NEVER have sex with their clients. It's all talk and drinking tea ... the misuage (price on virginity) is only once and it is a ritual to mark the "finishing" of a maikos training. The geisha institution isn't designed to give access to sexual gratification but to "social" gratification if you like.

  • Thank you for actually posting this instead of doing one of those fake.. "WATCH NOW.... if you click this link that's probably a virus =D"

  • First off -

the movie was based off the book 'Memoirs of a geisha'. which was a

fantastic book, but it wasn't the real story. The actual geisha who went

through this wrote her own book called 'Geisha in Gion.' That one was

    even better.

  • If you seen the movie or read the book you don't need captions....You know what is happening...and if you NEED captions read the book or go rent the movie.

  • i cant watch this movie without getting goosebumps *shivers*

  • JOHN WILLIAMS IS GOOD!

  • I watched this movie a long time ago. I forgot everything about it. I'm currently reading the book for a book report. I can't wait to finish the book and compare it to the movie!! I understand the book more than when I watched the movie for the first time. But maybe that was just cause i was only like 8 then. lol. anyway, thanks for uploading the movie online so i could watch it later!

  • woow il love

  • Aren't there supposed to be subtitles?

  • @happeecampee aren't they speaking in english? Well, I know it's "asian english" but...we can understand it right?

  • I love how her only concern is her sister such love, makes me happy :)

  • I think it's hilarious how they chose that actress to play Oka-san, who was pretty much the ugliest person described in the book. You can tell they tried to "uglyfy" the actress, but if you really look at her, she's very pretty (for her age).

I personally think she portrayed her character most accurately according to the book.

  • This seems like a very visual film, a very beautiful film. It really ought to be viewed at a higher quality. That said, thank you for uploading it ronniemonnie

  • omg thank you sooo much♥

  • Just got done reading the book. Time to watch this for the five-hundreth time then go back and reread the book.

  • god i wanted to beat hatsumomo with a bat

  • @fashionfriendsweb i dont think you need subtitles haha.. 90% of this movie are spoken in English :)

  • I love Hatsumomo <3

  • well here i go...

    i hope i enjoy it

  • I'm reading the book. This isn't exactly how it entered but so far they've done a fairly good job. And I believe she was the year of the monkey. ^^ but like i said. its really good so far

  • Youtube better not remove this movie!

  • thanks for uploading! appreciate it~!!! ^.^v

  • @ronniemonnie woot!

  • i have the movie . why am i watching this here ?? XD

  • @darliiingz03 Because watching movies and discussing on YouTube is fun! :D

  • @ronniemonnie I agree. Intellectual and artist rights must be honored but sharing on YouTube is a boost for movies. When I see clips and I like a movie, I ask our médiathèque outside Paris, France to please legally acquire it at full price. Many can share and they do wear down and must be replaced. Full price is paid. I have always tried to own materials legally. My last book, both editions are unauthorized. It is terrible. Thank you for this.

  • @ronniemonnie who admits to that? lol :D

  • @ronniemonnie Agree! :D It's a lot funnier to read all the comments and write comments about the movie - feels much cozier in some weird kind of way!

  • @misssweeted: I agree wholeheartedly with your statement.

  • @darliiingz03 : hahahaha I'm wondering the same thing here >"<

  • @darliiingz03

    same here!

  • @darliiingz03 cause it fell good to see with the other 480,000 people then watc alone on dvd hahaha

  • it would suck to be separated from my sister, even if we don't get along well

  • To me, the movie is not about so much Chiyo's indept story, as you can get that from the book, and they did a good job in portraying the message in the few minutes. The movie is a way to see all of the incredible beauty of Gion and the gorgeouse Geisha and basically Japan in the 1930s, all come to life.

  • omg THANKYOUUU <3

  • Could have done more in the beginning as in the book-but I suppose in the movie they just wanted to get right to the point? Disappointed

  • ok... well the beginning disappointed me a little compared to the book. /sigh but anyways, if the movie would have done the same at the book the time it we would have watched it would be like 24 hours or more. XDD

  • @nyago20 yeah... the beginning in this is what, under 3 minutes? provides no insight on her family dynamic or her life before Kyoto which is such a big part of her in the book - and, on the way over, wasn't it Chiyo who was comforting Satsu? Why is it the other way around now? This all bothers me!

  • @hevolado I know.. D: I took such a long time in the book before Satsu and Chiyo arrived in Gion :/

    I agree with you ^^

  • the movie is one of my favorites but if you want the true story dont read the book memories of a geisha, read geisha, a life by mineko iwasaki. its the true story of "Chiyo"

  • And I thought.. that it was year of the monkey not rooster?

  • Comment removed

  • after reading the book , i cant help but be annoyed at the changes and the parts they have missed out. though its a very good story

  • In my country, we call them bitches! Lol

  • uhh... i need to turn off my bedroom lights before watch this movie. but of all, full credits to the uploader from me!

  • does anyone know what music is plays in the middle of the movie? the violin part?

  • @lakers1221369 middle of the movie or middle of this part?

  • I am so in love with this movie. I dont care where you are from. In some way it accurately dipics a womans struggle with life, love , success and hating women~!

  • i love this movie seen it a million times :D

  • "A little water is good to guard against fire. You won't have to worry about the Okia burning"

    HMMMMMMMMMM.....

  • @HibikiKaabii LOL

  • @HibikiKaabii MY SIDES LOL

  • @HibikiKaabii well geisha were very supersticious and Mother (Granny in the book) was very afraid of fire as they had a whole bunch of expensive kamono in the attic. So water in her eyes is kind of like good luck that no fire will come upon them.

  • @HibikiKaabii especially at the end when Hatsumomo burns it all . x)

  • @HibikiKaabii okiya

  • How sad... She got separated from her sister. But I really wished there was eng subs in the beginning. :/ :( Still a great movie though. :)

  • this movie is very emotional

it's almost makes you feel like

    you ARE the little girls

  • @rhondadavisful you should read the book. it's even better

  • Are there supposed to be subtitles? :L

  • @ChileHT ...The movie is in English.

  • Chiyo is so pretty >.<

  • Where is my sister? ...like they will know 0__o

  • thanks! one of my fav movies and lol @ the morons asking for subtitles

  • in the first part of the movie the man(old haggard man) was the father and because of the poorness of the old man he now sold his daughter

  • this movie reminds me of this guy i like. i haven't told him i like him we just look at each other when ever i go to his work (he's a customer service guy at a grocery store) he knows my horrible sister. i have not talked to her in 5 years. i think it will be awkward if if i make the first move. only if life was just like the movies......

  • @tamarathms Take it from me girl; make your move NOW. don't wait, or he'll slip away from you.

  • @xXPrincessAllisaXx thanks for you're words. i appreciate it :)

  • @tamarathms No bothers; I know what it feels like. :)

  • @tamarathms i totally agree with princessallisa! i've had this happen before and i very much regret i didn't make the first move!

  • @okayyaylol thanks for you're advice =)

  • @okayyaylol Yay! Agreement-ness! :)

  • @tamarathms girl dont if he wants you he'll come

  • @tamarathms It's awkward for us guys too! We have this lady that consumes our every thought and we cant wait to just get a glimps of her. We fantasize about the first date, the first kiss, the first "time" - with eachother! We lust for you touch and a chance to hold you hand. Your smile and to say this is my lady. But you didn't say anything so our date wont happen, our wedding day wont come, our child wont be born. You didn't say anything. Go get what you want. Men do - why cant you?

  • @pinkpanda7858 You mean Japanese lady pimps. :P

  • can you put english subtitles please!!

  • Just finished reading the novel and I enjoyed it. Now I'm gonna see how the movie is :)

  • How did you upload this?

  • This is an amazing movie! i'm going to read the book because of this!

  • @Athecubus IMO the book is so much better. Also, there are a lot of differences between the film and the book.

  • This movie was good, but the book is much better (as usual).

  • Hatsumomo disliked this 17 times.

  • @aurorasky95 Do you know, that "Hatsumomo" means first peach XD (I´ve made an course)

  • @000CherryBlossom000

    And i`m german XD

  • @000CherryBlossom000

welll one thing for sure shes not as sweet as a peach O.o

  • @UsagiLoveX3 More like a mix of an Hentai and a Bitch !

  • @000CherryBlossom000

    oh yeah, big time. :D

  • @aurorasky95 Omg i loved this reply!!! Nice

  • @aurorasky95 Thank you for just about ruining the fucking book for me with your comment.

  • @YesIm10 Your welcome. :) Now you know the whole premise of the story and what happens in the end because of my one comment. Also please do not use curses to describe a beautiful book as it is the last thing it deserves. :)

  • LOL ily all :>

  • Damnit! I should've watch the movie instead of reading that whole book!!!

  • @ali8283 book is much better though...Arthur Golden is a wonderful author :]

  • @ali8283 The book is way better.

There is way more to it.

&& There is more creativity involved.

You're just mad cause you didn't get the chance to be lazy & watch a movie.

At least you exercised your eyes.

  • my favorite movie <3

  • I love that house!

  • Is this what they would call the red light district in Japan?
