He actually was a good bass player, a simple bass player, but for the style, a good one. It was the fact that he was skipping rehearsals, that Paul decided to take his slot. The Beatles owe alot to Stu.
If this really is Stu, than Wow. Just Wow. I had no idea how great his voice was, almost haunting.
However there isn't concrete proof that this really is Stu but if it is than it's such a gem. I really hope there is more out there, it'd be a shame to have such an amazing voice like his lost and gone forever.
@mytube5090able No. The singers voices are completely different. It's not from the older movie, either. I hope it's Stuart. Who ever it is, it sounds beautiful
@georgehairyson Fair enough but it's not just my opinion. It's the opinions of people who knew Stu and heard him sing on a regular basis. You're entitled to believe whatever you want. You don't need to be aggressive about it.
@georgehairyson You've been cool, georgehairyson, right from the start of this thing. And wonsaponatime....you and your slideshow full of innuendo are BUSTED! Ed Lineberry, original member of Rain, the guy who sang "Love Me Tender" for "Birth of the Beatles" has OFFICIALLY gone on record as stating it is NOT him singing on the newly-released Sutcliffe track. As Lennon once said, "When the Rain comes, they run and hide their heads"....so you should, wonsaponatime.
@ThePrinceDhani Read the quotes again. So far, NOBODY has said it isn't Stuart. Klaus said he didn't THINK it was Stuart. Pete Best's comment was made by the administrator of Pete's fan site...he said Pete didn't know about any such recording existing. We only have ONE anonymous forum poster regarding Astrid (IF she said anything at all) and Tony Sheridan's remarks said he was unsure about authenticity. How about using some intelligence, people.
@lovesutcliffe05 Well I don't believe it is Stuart. Like I said You're entitled to believe whatever you want. I'm not trying to change your mind I was just simply voicing my opinion. There is far more evidence to suggest it isn't Stu than there is to suggest it is. I can't really debate about it here YouTube doesn't allowe lengthy comments but believe what you will. I disagree. Accept that I disagree and then we can move on.
@ThePrinceDhani Evidence that it isn't Stu? Like what? What there is, is lack of evidence on BOTH sides. That's what we're waiting to clear up. So far, all there is has been opinion...from haters, from fans, and even from Stuart's contempories...nothing but opinion, not one fact...yet.
@lovesutcliffe05 Like I said I can't go into it too muh here because there isn't the space. I'm not trying to change your mind anyway I'm doubtful it can be done. You have your heart set on it being Stu.
Just my opinion, but when I hear this, it sounds like an older vocal recording with the instrumental track laid on much later. I could be wrong of course, but that's what it sounds like to me. And I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say that this was recorded in 1961, at least based on the style of it, because it still contains elements of the Elvis' version, and this is kind of how I imagined he would have sung it before I heard this. But that's just what I think.
@theriotAHDN apparently the recording may have been tampered with/edited by the private collector who held the track before Pauline Sutcliffe had access to it. so yes, you could be correct, especially with the drum beats. there have been suggestions that Stuart had recorded only his voice privately, or that this is being played with another band in Hamburg (he played with more bands than just the Beatles, especially having left them) such as The Bats (if i remember the name correctly)
@georgehairyson One thing I don't understand is that some people say this is not the way he would've sung it because its not the way Elvis did it. But why is it such a big stretch to think he sang this a different way? Is it really that big of an innovation? I mean some of the Beatles covers of oldies don't sound like the original they put their little spin on it. Am I wrong and just musically ignorant on this?
@BigBlueCane i know, i agree with you. just because he loved Elvis it doesn't mean he wouldn't put a completely different spin on it... i mean, he's an artist for crying out loud! he's an incredibly creative man!
This recording is in stereo and a stereo recording in 1960/1961 would be extremely rare. Was there a manufactured stereo mix made after the fact? Maybe but I doubt it.
Yeah I think you guys are right. I don't have the musical background to articulate what is different but when I heard both I could tell that while they sound similar they are also different in the way its sung. Example is that in this version the singer sings a differnent note on "life complete" than the singer in the movie. That doesn't prove that its Stu but I think that and other things show that its not the singer from the movie singing here.
I just checked the recording that was mentioned as being the same from the Movie Birth of the Beatles and it does sound very similar. Now in the movie the song is played from the middle and is interrupted so it can't be lifted from the movie. Its possible though that the complete track was recorded and then they used the best part for the movie. Its also possible that the singer was singing live in the movie although I don't think so. The difference is this version is sung differently.
Well I just listened to this on Breakfast with the Beatles and the Beatles news person said that this recording is actually of Stu in Hamburg after he had officially left the Beatles they let him sing his signature song. This recording was confirmed by his family that it is actually him. So take that for what its worth.
@supermecis as far as i know, this is Stuart Sutcliffe singing. i am going by what the Sutcliffe family have said and i am choosing to believe them, and thank you =)
@Wonsaponatime I just got back from holiday and haven't even had a chance to listen to it, but I shall do it later tonight and message you if I remember.
As far as I'm concerned the 'Stu Sutcliffe' singing is the guy who sang the song in Birth Of The Beatles. Perhaps he did it as a joke and it's got out of hand.
The real Stu would have sung it like Elvis, not like Percy Sledge. How could he have so perfectly anticipated an arrangement that didn't come out till 4 years after his death?
Besides, Klaus Voorman should know. He was there every night when Stu sang it.
@georgehairyson remastered to a very high standard,,, ????????????????? low high it said....., remastered ???? or trasfer to de cassete at youtube----?
@Utka84 not exactly clearing doubts... the estate doesn't know where the tape is from, who else is playing on it etc. They just say "it is Stu", but Klaus Voormann and Pete Best have already said they don't believe that... the arrangement of the song is also based on a cover version that came out in - hold your breath - 1966... there are more and more hints that this is not authentic. How well does Pauline remember the singing voice after not having heard it in 50 years?
@Wonsaponatime FYI the melody for Love Me Tender is a song that was written in 1861 called Aura Lee, it's a Civil War song. Additionally there's two versions that Elvis did, one is the version that most people recognize but the other is played during the end credits of Elvis' first film 'Flaming Star' ... that version is similar to this version, in that it's slower tempo, but just an acoustic guitar accompanying the lyrics. It's on youtube, as is the Aura Lee song (Aura Lee was in a 1936 film)
@bloomcountyUSA I'm aware that the song is very old. Percy Sledge's was not the first cover. It's just damn similar. How many covers of the song in 12/8 time and with such an arpeggio backing exist that Stuart could have known?
@Wonsaponatime Brought it up because the version of Jim Reeves singing Aura Lee sounds more similar to this than the version of Percy Sledge doing Love Me Tender. That can be found out here, it's been posted by 'Bob in the UK.' Take a listen and let me know what you think, not sure when the Reeves version was popular though, but saw someone comment elsewhere that it was released before Presley's version was.
@bloomcountyUSA I know I got the film wrong, but was a little frazzled today. Anyhow in "The Trouble with Girls" (another Elvis film, late 60's) he does another cover of the melody from Aura Lee during a song called "Violet (Flower of NYU)" ... once again totally different arrangement, but it's apparent that it's the same for the first minute or so ... then it segues into some really kooky ragtime that's completely unrelated. LOL
klaus voormann and pete best have expressed they don't believe this is stu. and these guys should have heard him sing this song a lot, certainly more often than any sutcliffe family members who didn't go to ONE gig in hamburg... waiting for astrid kirchherr's opinion. if anything, this was taped as a gift to her, so she should know something.
@Wonsaponatime I'd love to know Astrid's opinion as I value it greatly, I wish she would shed some light on the topic - I'm hoping of writing to her soon.
@Wonsaponatime Could you provide a source for that, either an interview, or official statement? The reason that I'm asking is that the song was only released to the public on October 20th, 2011, if they've made an official statement I'd like to verify it rather than seeing people referring to your posts on this video as if it's authoritative. Prior to October 20th did Klaus and Pete know that this recording existed?
@bloomcountyUSA There have been no big official statements by the two of them. Klaus Voormann was asked by Hans Olof Gottfridsson about the track - and he had a contact on a German beatles forum. So it just happened by e-Mail. Pete Best's quote came from his website... The admin of Pete's official site that he and Pete don't believe it's Stuart. I personally wait for statements by Astrid and/or Paul before I make up my mind.
@Wonsaponatime ... and you received this email within the last 8 days? I mean, what was the date on the email that was originally sent, was it after October 20th?
@bloomcountyUSA The comments by Klaus and Pete were made soon after the Estate released this, so yes, after october 20th. They listened to the same track we listen to.
Sorry guys, but this is just someone's cover of Percy Sledge's version which was released in 1966, four years after Stu's death. Same key, same waltz tempo, same arpeggios, same phrasing, just like the Birth Of The Beatles version.
@georgehairyson No, indeed....believe me george, I really want to believe it. I hope it IS Stu....how wonderful after all these years....there are anomalies here that are very strange though. I will take you at your word, and enjoy it, but it does not sound like an old tape remastered and the backing track has a vague, ancient mello-trony feel to it. Not something you would do with a recording of this historical value....even in my Pro-tools home set up I could have made it sound better. Cheers!
I don't know... the singer sounds suspiciously like the guy who played stu in 'birth of the beatles' in 1979. there he sang the song with that voice, with that phrasing, and even in the same key (which is a different key than presley's original). listen at 4:43 v=iTKfXQg43fw
This is not a recording of Stu Sutcliff, this is a recording of professional singer used in the Dick Clark produced television movie, The Birth Of The Beatles. This was used in the scene where George Harrison is arrested and deported by Hamburg authorities. I watching it right now. It is same recording.
@lastangelman I've looked at the clip from the film that you're talking about, that version is less than one minute long, it gets interrupted within the film by the police coming in to drag George Harrison off to deport him. If you want to see it, there's a couple of people out here on youtube that have it uploaded (the film) in 10 parts, the song appears in part 4 near the middle of the segment. It's pretty short, this version is a little over 3 minutes long ... just saying.
@lastangelman I think you have to take another listen. These are two separate recordings and two different singers, somewhat similar, but no way the same.
It most certainly IS NOT Stuart.Simply because that would mean a never before even heard of Beatles recording, since Stu never played or recorded with anyone else EVER!I wonder if a single piece of evidence could be produced of such recording.
@hisuky go and talk to his sister Pauline, and she'll confirm it for you like she confirmed it for me. and if you still don't believe it then please feel free to fuck off
BEAUTIFUL!!!!! He was a real beatle! Lovely voice too. My question is why it was lost from all beatle stuff all this years??? Pablo Fiszlejder - Argentina.
Pity they had to spoil what would have been a beautiful recording by overdubbing some crappy bar band playing along. Why can't we just have the original tape with Stu singing?
Also, you can't buy the song outside of the UK, which is pretty stupid.
@548723651 I would buy a CD with this version on it, but would recommend having the undubbed version as a bonus track (the "B-side", one could say). That said, the dubbing on this is pretty tasteful (to me, anyway).
How is it that the Beatles couldn't get a demo of decent quality circa this period, but Stu has a professional recording of himself? Something ain't right here....
@Quintellectual it's a very old tape that has been remastered to a very high standard, i assure you it's authentic but i can't force you to believe me
Yes, this is definitely Stuart singing. The song was released October 20, 2011 by the Stuart Stucliffe estate. You can also purchase it by going to the brand new Official Stuart Sutcliffe Fan Club---this site is being offered to all Stu's admirers, and was put together by David Bedford (author of "Liddypool: Birthplace of the Beatles"). Join up----buy the song! The site is great and the song is beautiful....so is Stu.
@Mnz131 ohh it most certainly is =) the recording is available from Amazon and it's copyright to the Stuart Sutcliffe Estate. I have also had personal confirmation from the 'grand nephew' of Stuart, who is in regular contact with Stuart's sister, Pauline, who organised the remastering and release of the track =)
@georgehairyson Released on October 20th by Stuart's estate, the song is beautifully done by Stu. He was head chorister of his church choir when he was a boy in Liverpool; the training shows as he holds the notes of "Love Me Tender" strongly and steadily. This is not only an amazing piece of musical history...it's a unique chance to look into the musical soul of the band member whom Pete Best called "the smallest Beatle with the biggest heart". Stuart fans will love it...I sure do.

It is same recording.

definitely not the same performance/recording, but sounds like it could be the same singer. hmm...

@lastangelman We don't know for certain, so please stop commenting as though you know what you're saying is a fact.

@lastangelman
Sorry, but this is a VERY different recording with a different arrangement and a different singer...

He sang pretty good. I can't imagine that voice as a part of the Beatle sound but it's interesting

BEAUTIFUL!!!!! He was a real beatle! Lovely voice too. My question is why it was lost from all beatle stuff all this years??? Pablo Fiszlejder - Argentina.

Again, who did the overdubbing, where was it done, how do we have a pro quality demo of Stu, when JPG&P couldn't get that done at the time?
I want to believe this, but even families are inclined to believe profitable myths...
Quintellectual 4 months ago
Pity they had to spoil what would have been a beautiful recording by overdubbing some crappy bar band playing along. Why can't we just have the original tape with Stu singing?
Also, you can't buy the song outside of the UK, which is pretty stupid.
548723651 4 months ago
@548723651 I would buy a CD with this version on it, but would recommend having the undubbed version as a bonus track (the "B-side", one could say). That said, the dubbing on this is pretty tasteful (to me, anyway).
dascottjr 4 months ago
@548723651 I'm in the US and was able to buy it yesterday. Maybe the UK got it a day earlier? I don't think it's available in Australia, though....

How is it that the Beatles couldn't get a demo of decent quality circa this period, but Stu has a professional recording of himself? Something ain't right here....
Quintellectual 4 months ago
@Quintellectual it's a very old tape that has been remastered to a very high standard, i assure you it's authentic but i can't force you to believe me
georgehairyson 4 months ago
Any more info on this recording? who is the band, when was it recorded? where has it been all these years?

@xXepicRAWRXx
The site is great and the song is beautiful....so is Stu.

georgehairyson 4 months ago
@georgehairyson How can we be sure? I mean, did anyone confirm ?
Thanks for the answer btw :)
Mnz131 4 months ago
@Mnz131 ohh it most certainly is =) the recording is available from Amazon and it's copyright to the Stuart Sutcliffe Estate. I have also had personal confirmation from the 'grand nephew' of Stuart, who is in regular contact with Stuart's sister, Pauline, who organised the remastering and release of the track =)
georgehairyson 4 months ago
@georgehairyson Released on October 20th by Stuart's estate, the song is beautifully done by Stu. He was head chorister of his church choir when he was a boy in Liverpool; the training shows as he holds the notes of "Love Me Tender" strongly and steadily. This is not only an amazing piece of musical history...it's a unique chance to look into the musical soul of the band member whom Pete Best called "the smallest Beatle with the biggest heart". Stuart fans will love it...I sure do.
