it's interesting to see different people's thoughts and interpretations of art. i am not going to bash this. you can tell the person is pretty sheltered an naieve. it seems as though she went fromm watching disney channel to nan goldin.
Not bad, I'd give this a B. There are some factual errors, but whoever said Nan was not in NYC is wrong. To the creator of this project: (a) you spelled "Biography" wrong, and (b) these men dressed as women are not "transvestites", they are are Drag Queens. A Drag Queen is a gay man that wears women's clothes, often for performance. A transvestite is a straight man in women's clothes, and most often has far less style than a Drag Queen. Other than that, this isn't that bad.
but too bad about the factual errors. for example - kim is a french dancer/actress who lived and worked in paris, not in new york. it's a pity, because it's easy to find material about these works (listen to a few of goldin's interviews on youtube or even read some books about her work).
I like your interpretation, but I'm a little off-put by your use of adjectives such as "mannish". I think that Nan Goldin found a lot of beauty in androgyny in her early work, and I don't think that her subjects wanted to be women- her work exposes an aesthetic shift in a tumultuous time and I think she was trying to show the beauty of most of her subjects rather than critique their lifestyle. You have to remember that when most of these photos were taken, Goldin was high on heroin or coke.
Anyone who has read about Goldin's work or went as far as to click to the right and listen to Goldin speak of her own work, they would understand how absolutely ridiculously inaccurate this interpretation is. Particularly your discussion of drag queens. Wow. Just so so far off.
Guys it's only analysed because that's what English courses ask you to do, basically. They want you to show off how well you can analyse, not how accurate you can be.
Regardless, this is very well written/read/composed.
whether what you have said is what the artist was tring to convey in her potos or not, i think you did a wonderful job of explainng them if those words are what the pictures made you feel. i enjoyed this video.
Whoever did this please watch the video on here where Nan is talking about her own work. (parts 1 and 2) If you do, you will see how wrong you were about so many things. Thanks for trying, it is always good to see her work, but please do not over analyze her art, just look at it and feel it.
dont listen to these people i am an art professor and I want to thank you for this video and its nice to hear someone talk about art the right way.you know what you are looking at.did you write that?If you did ill hire you to write something about my work

the image of nan and brian is staged it's all acted out she might show the harsh realities of the 80's but she's the furthest thing from an honest photographer. she's a clever woman who saw a market and used her 'friends' 4 her own benefit
even if it's staged, what's wrong with that? That's how she felt, that's what she wanted to show on her photos. It doesn't matter whether it's staged or not, what's important is what she's trying to show, say and express through her photographs.
i saw her work a week ago in helsinki it was beautiful and i also saw her movie/documentery on wat happend in those years. the reason she made photos and why she proseeded in the end when many of her close friends died of aids when it was stil an onknown illnis. she does not think of the light or the story behind it she just saw people, friends whit feelings and and bonding. she had a hard life photografi made herget thrue it. but keep up the work.
omg fuck off !!! this was amazing. i loved it. perfect analysation. people are so fukin stupid tbh! its called having a brain and understanding what the picture tells a viewer. nan goldin may not of planed it that way necessarily but thats how it happened and thats how its portrayed. so shut up and stop slagging this off cos i think its really excellent. well done! xxxxx
who the fuck is narrating? she was a simple capturing agent. there is no expression, it is just opening your fucking eyes to the juxtaposition of life around her with some sort of lymphatically-based -balence
unbelievably crass commentary. Couldn't handle all that analysis of imagined emotions . like the one she goes on about how the light on brian's face and abs signifies so and so. And what goldin is possibly feeling and longing for. The girl must be out of her mind. Sorry girl! please focus on the totality of a moment when you shoot next.
