ana you are wrong about europe. at least here in germany we have very very strong regulations on how your house may look like. and that's not about colors only, it's also about how many floors your house may have, if you make a window into your roof and so on. it's a huge burocratic way you have to go if you want to build something unconventional. of course that's a german thing, this isn't the same in other european countries, but you can't generalize it in the way you did.

I work at a realtor's office and I help the property manager, we have to waste up to half a day everyday just to contact all the HOA's because our tenants TRASH CAN is on the wrong side of your house, and you get fines. And every time a home owner wants to redo even their BACK YARD, we have to submit to HOA for approval. Its fucking ridiculous. You even have to submit a form to put up a satellite dish.
In my neighborhood if you have a car in your driveway that doesn't run neighbors will call the cops on you. If someone's dog gets loose and gets in their yard they won't say damn thing to the owner, but they call the cops. What you have on your property is your own damn business, if it's not illegal. Toilets must be illegal in their state , I guess. Oh so it makes your property value go down ? That's the real estate insurance companies, and the market deciding that, NOT YOUR NEIGHBOR ! Fuck'em!
I got a $350 ticket from the City for putting my trash out 1 day early... I also got a $500 ticket from the City for having an unregistered car in my driveway. Then the City told me I had to pay to have the car removed from MY HOUSE or pay another $500 and go to jail for 30 days. Welcome to America! Land of the Free? Yeah fuckin' right. Home of the brave? A few months later i was fined for not changing the bulb in a light post in my front yard garden. My home is owned NOT rented. I could live in Russia and have more rights.

I am a bit torn on this issue, while I am all for protecting free speech, where do we draw the line. Do we allow all things to be allowed in the name of free speech? What if someone put a pornographic image on their garage? Or penis statues? or non-paying solicitations for sex? do we allow for that as free speech, or do we use relative smartness and decide that somethings while allowed can be handled through the courts in preventing disgusting displays in semi public arenas.

I Agree, American justice system should focus more on rehabilitation... Of course, prison doesn't do any good to anyone, prison usually hardens/mold young ppl into criminal. I remember how shocked I was when I first learned about neighborhood ordinances. I was always of the general opinion that you could do what you wanted (within reason) on your own property but it's nearly always the case. That "you're bringing down my property value" argument is tough. So it didn't surprise me that he got into hot water but 4yrs taken out the man's life is an excessive penalty.

The thing is, and Cenk touched on it almost at the end, but he's right, and these sorts of bullshit laws have been used in the past as a justification to not allowing 'undeseriables' into town (such as minorities) because they might 'lower the property value' of an area. This sort of shit needs to stop, not just because it's bullshit (and it is), but because it's so easily abusable.

Anyone remember when, in some county or another, they used eminent domain to confiscate some private property on behalf of PRIVATE DEVELOPERS??? I mean, seriously, they took away peoples' homes so that a private business could build condos there. And then somewhere else in Florida they arrested some group for feeding the homeless, and the state also refused to take in any Katrina refugees. Such a crazy state...

I am a bit torn on this issue, while I am all for protecting free speech, where do we draw the line. Do we allow all things to be allowed in the name of free speech? What if someone put a pornographic image on their garage? Or penis statues? or non-paying solicitations for sex? do we allow for that as free speech, or do we use relative smartness and decide that somethings while allowed can be handled through the courts in preventing disgusting displays in semi public arenas.
