Used to use it almost exclusively - I was a slide player first and foremost. Tend to use standard tuning more now. Didn't take all that long to arrange (about a week) but learning to play it... took a long bloody time!

so I tried learning this in standard tuning...how much easier (seeing as how this song is a pain no matter how you look at it...by the way killer job...mistakes and all...how long did it take you to memorize this?)is it too play in Open D (which is low to high D, A, d, f#, a, d' , right?)?

Basically although I was aware and had heard edgar cruz's version, I deliberately decided to arrange it entirely from scratch. I use open D tuning a lot for slide playing so am pretty familiar with the chords and scales in it. it works i think because the first half of the tune is in A and so when it gets to the loud part (in D), you can really pound the open strings. Took me (when I stopped procrastinating) a few days to arrange, but much longer to commit it to memory,

Edgar Cruz's version is the one I tried to learn at first, then Guitar One, or World, printed a version in their mag that was ridiculous but I tried it...I also have the sheet music...guess it's time to start transcribing it over to guitar! Thanks for the inspiration...so Open D huh! I'll give it a go! Merry Christmas!

RE Edgar Cruz: His version's fantastic and is very much arranged from a classical guitar perspective; I'm a rock player, turned acoustic and have tried to arrange it from a different (perhaps slightly raw-er) angle.
