  • shiveeeeeeer

  • @BookeaterStroryeater Not that I can recall.

  • Does anybody heard a most movind (and sad) song than this in video games these days?

  • When the world comes to an end, I shall play this song, sit down on my recliner and smoke my pipe.

  • Finally! found this soundtrack :P

  • Too many beloved characters have suffered throughout this to call it a game...

How Schala was forced to obey the Zeal Queen...

How the three Gurus were drastically misplaced...

How Janus was painfully separated from his family...

How Robo's brothers relentlessly beat him down...

How Marle almost vanished from space and time...

And Chrono... how he had to die....

    :'(

  • This song is almost like an ancient prophecy... A secret kept for thousands of years is now told to you. Now that you know the prophecy, it is your duty to fulfill it and save the world.

Sort of like the story on Chrono Tigger but just a little different.

  • goosebumps anyone

  • I get chills when I hear this song. Haunting, creepy, and beautiful all at the same time. When put together with the eerie, haunting comments about Lavos and the mysteries of the world that you hear in this area... Chilling yet amazing at the same time.

  • this song is so amazing. Its just creepy and beautifull at the same time

  • Reminds me of Princess Celestia opening the sealed door in MLP FiM season 2.

  • @Alphahumphrey2011

    hahaha, so true.

Although I must say this moment was a billion times better.

  • Comment removed

  • "The desperate wish of a dying man."

The first words I think of when I hear this soundtrack.

Though 'dying' doesn't seem to justify the guru's life in this case.

  • This is the song that should've played on May 8, 2009. That was the day Crimson Echoes, the huge fan-made sequel was shut down 23 days before it released.

  • All life begins and ends with Nu.

  • My heart skipped like 16 beats when I first heard this song

  • 3 people can go sleep beyond the flow of time...

  • @RikkudoSennin That was... *tears up* Beautiful...

  • "And so bravely, the heroes had fought. with heart, soul, and spirit. But, nay, twas not enough. For the mighty alliance of unlikely heroes had fallen...And the future...Refused to change".

  • ''and now this creature sleeps beyond the flow of time.'' Whenever i see this phrase with this music, I trip the hell outta the time :X

  • I never could shut down the Nu. Not with that music playing.

  • This song is playing at my funeral.

  • @doomsickle0 I might need to copy you. Although I'll probably have it burst into the Gato song at some point just to fuck with everyone.

  • But the future refused to change

  • For three people, the future refused to change...

  • This sounds ominously like Secret of Evermore music.

  • Omarion - Ice Box, the begining sounds alot like this. :/

  • @GreenRazkal It does!

  • oh, this song had my crying.

This video game has the best music.

  • so ooooooooooooooooooooo o o o o dramatic

  • 3 people needs to play CT now!

  • why did the guru who made the nu had to die he was awsem for makeing him sefl into a nu

  • Pretty heartfelt song. Uematsu can sure pull at the old heartstrings! This song makes me think about "Is there still time? Can we save the future?".

  • @MagnaderAlpha are you sure this one is uematsu? Almost 100% of this soundtrack is by mitsuda. Uematsu helped on a few.. I didn't think this was one of those..

  • @danzai Yes, it's Uematsu. Just do a search on the web and you'll find it. It listed his name in the booklet I got with my Chrono Trigger OST, as well. Besides that, the melody's a good indicator. Even when in doubt, Uematsu's style in melody shines through. It's how I knew(without any doubt) he was the composer for The Last Story even before they commented on who the composer was. It's the same with Mitsuda too. Very distinguishable melody styles.

  • @danzai Thread necro, but I'll bite..Most of this is Mitsuda. I, like so many people who played these games eons ago, love nobuo uematsu's music, but you really can tell he's not classically trained in music. FFXII is a glaring example of this with Hitoshi Sakimoto among others, all of whom were 'classically' trained in music really made things pop.

  • For 3 people, the future refused to change.

  • i think its great to see, some of us although older now, coming back to listen to these song...

  • i remember when i played this game and i could never beat lavos but when i did i felt like i won 10000$ lol

  • Saddest moment of the game :(

  • Um I just got mad nostalgia chills. This song........Nothing will ever beat the Chrono Trigger soundtrack it just hits you on every aural level and incites emotions that games today just cannot get too.

  • i ffound it kinda sad that you had to turn off the monster forever while this music played TT_TT

  • @zoralink113 I just turned him off and that's why I looked for this music on youtube and here's you talking about the poor monster :(. He's in a better place now...

  • @HardcoreSNiper (the monster sleeps beyond time) really made my spine go crazy

    TT--TT

  • cool!!

    I love this music!

Stopping playing game , I used to be listening to this music

  • "Look, the future is bleak, I'm old and I grew insane. I think I finished a time machine, but I'm not gonna live to either write the user's manual, nor to assist you in the battle against the monster that destroyed our world. Shake before use." Damn, it's like some sort of x-mas gift you don't really want...

  • This creature sleeps beyond the flow of time.

That line is sooo damn good. It makes you think why this all happened. It was not needed to be like that. It's all because of Lavos, otherwise there was no need for this all to happen.

Poor guru's, they must had so much pain being send to different places, and leave 12.000 BC. Poor Schala, she was innocent, and was forced to obey the queen.

U see, this music and that line, it makes you think, and that is a good thing. I like that.

  • @19Imperial88 believe me when i say that the stories of those three gurus, especially Balthasar, are some of the deepest and most thought provoking parts of any video game ever. Balthasar giving you the epoch and then having the option to turn him off is arguably my favorite moment in any video game.

  • @guyssorry tho it is still your own opinion, i like to believe so

  • After all these years..

    It never gets boring.

It's just amazingly epic, deep emotional music.

  • The first time I turned the Nu off I felt weird so I came back and tried to press the button again because I tought I killed him....me and my brother were like OH NO!!!!

such a great time to be a children the 90s

  • Poor Baltasar ... He said he was going insane for staying so long in a future cold and empty, having as a unique company called Nu, which soon would store their thoughts to him, hoping that we found him ... His last request was to let the creature rest over time because it would've done your best ...

I was ten years old the first time I played, did not really know the meaning of life, but is really a beautiful game with beautiful songs and that enhances our feelings

  • @GraviFreak No. his is the REALLY sad song.

  • I've seen on the videos for the music from this game posted many times, people arguing about the best game music of all time, and while my vote totally goes for Chrono Trigger, I would say the only other game I've ever remembered and sought out the music from was Mega Man 2. Although it's not as complex as this is, its equally as catchy. Come to think of it, besides Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, I have spent no more time on any game then on Chrono Trigger and Mega Man 2.

  • This song is very heart wrenching being used with the end of two lives; the Nu and Belthazar. The sadness of Belthazar losing his sanity and realizing it, but not being able to do anything about it.

  • Good :D

  • "this creature sleeps beyond the flow of time..." such a profoundly unsettling scene and such a fate for that guru!

  • what i find most disturbing is the combination of this piece with the scene of a futuristic ruined world. such image is so hard to get out of my head, even tho i played this game more than 10 years ago. bearing in mind this could be our very world. huge cities around the globe frozen in time, leaving traces of those humans who were left behind. extremeley creepy...

  • "....My Wings of Time......."

  • whenever i see that poor nu with belthasars mind in it with this music in the background i just feel like :

    :'(

  • Man this song still gets me every single time.

The song not only is sad because of the state of the city but the theme itself has that helpless feeling.

    It is also very melodic.

Probably one of the saddest tunes in this game.

  • I always feel sad when Balthasar begs you to press the button on his back and shut him off after you get the Epoch. I always honor his request each and every time I play to that point BTW. It just seems like the right thing to do to ease his suffering. This music makes that scene even more poignant and sad.

  • @TheUnpromisedOne

There is a reason i rarely listen to this song.

It is because i am overwelmed with a terrible sadness.

This and to good friends get to me.

  • The scene with Balthasar's nu is one of the scenes that most touched me in any game.

It felt uneasy after I turned him off, like I really did just witness someone great die...

  • @Neonite86

    You and me both..... :(

  • Fun Fact: Nobuo composed this.

  • Seriously? No wonder then that it is my favorite song of this game ^^

  • LOL, Mitsuda is still a far better composer IMO. But that's a great argument.

  • "This creature sleeps beyond the flow of time."

  • "Time does not appear to flow for this substance anymore."

  • lolz that frog looks like a dog on the front cover

  • This song is CT's way of saying F U!

  • FUUUCK this is one of those songs i have a weakness against that make me instantly depressed.

    Its beutifull and sad

  • the creature is now no longer disturbid buy the floe of time saddest video game quote ever

  • well,i didn't play the original version.

    Only a German-Patched.

But the scene with Balthazar (=the Nu)

    is so emotional.

    But when he said

"Please turn off this machine,it did it's work".

I always got a full goose flesh!

  • I always turned him off... it's a bit like putting a really, REALLY sick animal to sleep, to end its suffering.

  • I may have missed something but why did balthasar take the form of a Nu in the future?

  • Good question lol I really forgot I havent played the game in a while. He stored his memory in the Nu...thats all I remember.

  • Otissor is right. Balthazar didn't become a Nu. He stored his consciousness (memories, thoughts, etc) inside the Nu because he was basically slowly losing his mind.

  • I always wonder whatever became of Balthazar. Do you think he died?

  • This is a tough question-- but in the 'original' timeline (that is, had the heroes not gone to fight Lavos and stop the bleak future), absolutely he died. That's why the Nu was there. Balthazar was losing his mind. What a way to die, too. :(

  • @darisinggamer

HE took that form because he grew too old, and knew he would soon die, so he downloaded his memories into the Nu.

  • In my opinion, this track so painfully embodies the sense of complete and utter hopelessness that characterizes Balthasar's stay in 2300 AD.

  • this song and the song from the world of ruins in ff6 hold the same amount of hopelessness.

  • I always loved the tune of this song.

  • memories..... :'-)....

  • i like that when he asks you to turn him off, there's no consequences other than your own feelings toward the choice you made. i love when games do that.

  • This is the best videogame song ever

  • Nostalgic... This is the word...

  • Very beautiful (:

  • this song is so sad. It makes me feel nostalgic.

  • First time playing this and hearing the guy talk about Blackbird and Ocean palace I was like: ''WTF?'' then I realized: oh yeah, I'll get to know them after 15 more hours of gameplay or so :D

  • for a seckond there (first 30) I thought someone tricked me and started playin breath of fire music.

  • this song is so unsettling, it's just great.

i remember being so scared to advance any further in sections with this song playing. Of course, this was when i was 6 years old, lol.

  • @FFVIIIFanatic

The words of belthazar's diary echoes in my mind:

Slowly he was going insane in a world of hopelessness and misery and he too losing hope.

In the end he grew frail and put his mind inside of a nu.

  • @FFVIIIFanatic This doesn't do that at all to me,instead i instantly feel depressed and sad.

This is one of those songs that no matter how many times i hear it,the event is just so sad.

  • @FFVIIIFanatic I also played the game at a very young age (8) Is it just me, or did experiencing the year 2300 AD for the first time really creep you out?

  • definitely, it was quite an affecting area...seeing how world after lavos had changed so much.

  • I've played this game a million times but in all those playthroughs I never switched Balthasar off in the the Nu creature ...

I don't know; I kind of felt sorry for the guy, being dragged into the future and living the rest of his life there and all that... damn.

Gaspar probably had the worst fate trapped in the end of time...

  • It's creepy when you switch it off...And you're in the same room still.

It's like a dead body that could just pop out at any moment. O_o

  • I always turned him off.

Believe me, I felt every ounce of sympathy for him; and that's why I always did it.

I always compared him to a dying animal/person beyond the reach of any sort of help, just kind of sitting there, slowly and painfully dying...and you know people usually kill them to end their suffering because it's all they could really do?

That's what it felt like to me. I didn't want to do it, but it was his final request and he was miserable anyways.

  • That's the main reason WHY I always shut off Balthasar when I get to that point in the game. Because I feel sorry for him living on as a robot in a cold, desolate future where the world is dying slowly and painfully and horribly.

Damn... that scene is sad as fuck. I feel sorry for Balthasar. In fact, EVERYBODY from 12,000 B.C,. with the exception of Queen Zeal, warrants some level of sympathy from me.

  • Chrono Frenchise is in need for another installement !

Man i miss those days so much !

  • Didn't they reuse this song in Chrono Cross? It sounds familiar.

  • Nobuo must be behind this it feels like a bit of FF6 and FF7 as if it was made between ;)

  • indeed nobuo was the chorno trigger s compositor

  • one of them at least... from what I understand he came and finished up was already there.

  • Yasunori Mitsuda did most of the music. Uematsu finished it up when Mitsuda had to stop due to an illness

  • so wonderful melody

  • I remember hearing this the first time I opened one of those sealed doors. The first thing I said was "OMG, it opened!" In fact, I used to call this song the "OMG it opened song"

  • In the end, the future refused to change...

  • this song is depressing

  • This song sure brings up a lot of painful memories of mine...makes me cry...

    But it's a good song.

  • Such a sad and haunting melody.

  • Haunting is a good word... Also pretty disturbing... Good though.

  • This music sure sounds creepy. I LOVE it!

  • To me, this is a song that seems like it is saying, "THIS is what the pendant's for."

It sounds mysteriously sad, or like you came to more realization about a tragic past. (Lavos.)

  • I don't know if im the only one, but each time i hear this song sad memories come by, since its the point were Belthasar dies and its like in the future, the place were everything is doomed, people are screwed up and your just alone in this world in which you can only find mutants out to kill you aswell as robots, and the few humans that remains are totally hopeless, the future feels completely empty, but thanks to Belthasar, things change...Best Game Ever.

  • Well said my friend... well said...

  • It's just a game so it's of course up for total consideration, but do you guys think that maybe since you stopped Lavos in 1999 (or whenever you stopped it via Black Omen) Belthasar may have gotten sent to a happier future and lived on past 2300?

  • Ever played Chrono Cross? He did. He isn't insane in that game... Well... Less so. :P

  • Well yes. Robo did, so Belthasar obviously did too

  • This song went well with the scene where you're going through the room, looking at those glowing spots telling you about Lavos. It makes you feel sorry for Balthasar, and this doesn't help.

  • Yeah, it had to be the first time a video game made me feel empathetic towards a character. Balthasar really got screwed over compared to the other two sages.

  • gurus?

  • If I remember correctly, yes, when the group watches the tape of Lavos destroying the world. It also plays in small bits here and there but that was the first introduction to this song.

  • Nope. It actually plays in Keeper's Dome and whenever you open a Sealed Door.

  • it was played when you get epoch in 2300 yup :P

  • This game was and is meant to be.

  • I like to call Belthasar's Nu form "Nuasar".

  • I used to be able to play this on the piano. Can't remember it any more. Awesome song and awesome game. Can't wait for the DS version.

  • I loved this song, too bad it only happened in like one scene. This song is so awesome but in a way the scene and the song were too sad that even though you liked the theme, you didn't want to stay in the room. :(

  • beautiful song...

  • Uematsu didn't contribute a single lousy track to this game, and this is probably the best of them.

  • THIS one...Uematsu composed. He composed about ten track for the game. Matsuda composed the 40 others. I think this one is his strongest score....his other scores are good. But Matsuda owns his ass still =D

  • I agree! I love Matsuda's work more than Uematsu.

  • Mystery of the Past was lousy.

  • Probably why CT rates in the top ten of my favorite video games ever. This theme explains alot about the despair shown in the future, and then the hope that follows after it. Very few games ever get this right.

  • I love playing this piece on my Yamaha C7grand piano. :)

  • Marle is using fire?!?!?!?!?!

  • Suspend your disbelief.XD

That's also not where you fight that monster.

  • lol i know you fight it in this cave with a lot of water

your right i never noticed that either

  • You don't fight a monster here. This is where you obtain the time ship. It's sad that the guru had to be off forever.

  • Dude no its not. This isn't where you fight a Monster This is where that Thing from Zeal Gives you the Epoch

  • CHRONO TRIGGER REMAKE!. New Area! No spoilers.

  • The song was sad, for some reason, when i heard it, its like something bad had already happened, and nothing could be done to help

  • I felt sad because the guru died in order to make something to save the world. And you have to turn off the robot...forever...

  • I know its just a game, but i felt sad when he died, especially because it was in the future, and you felt so alone there, he was like your only real help there,

Belthasar, Guru of reason was awesome

  • This creature sleeps beyond the flow of time...

  • deep..... lol kinda

  • R.I.P Belthasar

  • Ah, one of Nobuo Uematsu's best contributions to this soundtrack.

  • wait, nobu uematsu did the music for chrono trigger? o_O I thought it was yasunori mitsuda. Uematsu did FF

  • Uematsu did about ten songs, mostly from 2300 A.D. and 65,000,000 B.C., and him and some other guy whose name I'm blanking on did the 1st Boss Battle theme (for less important fights). He was originally only an advisory role, and only a few of his songs are particularly famous on CT. Also, he is in the dream project ending. And he did other soundtracks too, like Tales of Symphonia.

  • oh, I had no idea. Learn something new everyday...

  • with chrono trigger we can kick ass to all games

if it was re-made very well

  • it's going to be released in winter this year for the DS

  • There is a problem with the picture and I have just noticed... MARLE IS THROWING FIRE!! she is supposed to use ice magic, not fire

  • not to mention they are fighting heckran.. In what looks like death peak.. But heckran was in his little cave in 1000 AD.. I love ghetto box art that doesnt go with the game!! CHRONO TRIGGER IS THE BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!

  • lol

  • this game will never get old. never

  • WORD!

This game is THE SHIT! Everyone should play it...EVERYONE!

  • with about 15 unique endings how could it

  • This game has so beautiful music... I can´t deside what is the best melody.. They´re all so beautiful and great..

  • this game was way ahead of it's time.

the music rivals most movie OST's of today.

  • Creepy...
