Considering that American pasta and pizza culture comes from far Southern Italy, it's different than what "Europeans" consider proper, because they treat Sicilians like country idiots. Neapolitan Italians eat spaghetti with their hands much of the time, and it's not considered a main dish.

I do not know where you learned that from, but THAT is not at all how we eat spaghetti in Italy.

First of all there is no need of a spoon, then wrap fewer spaghetti at a time and do NOT brandish you fork as if it were a pitchfork.
