I actually got my engine rebuilt, so now i have a brand new timing chain, new pistons all new gaskets, but it still rattles quietly sometimes, hardly noticeable. I'm hopefully gonna go KA-T summer of 2011,I already have all the parts ready just need to install, Im going with a T3,hoping to make 300whp.
i had that same problem with my 240 and it was that guide it came off and just mest up the top timing chain but i asked the nissan dealership if it had to have it they said to just leave it off and its been running better without it
This has always been the problem with 240sx, the tension guide for the timing chain is made out of some cheap nylon, and always falls apart and the chain starts to bang up against the timing chain cover until it makes a small hole in the cover. Many people spend all their money on these cars trying to find out why it is overheating. The second main problem is the fuel injectors, they should be replaced, about $400.
There are two guides on the upper timing chain. They can both be removed and no need to be replaced. By leaving them in the engine you risk having them break apart and fall into places you don't want them to go. Also, the tensioner can get gunked up and that can causes the rattle. You can clean it with some WD-40 and pushing the tensioner in and out.
that squeky type noise is the water pump mine does it too ever since i changed my thermostat and flushed the sys by sticking a water hose down the upper rad hose and turn the cr on it makes that noise, it still works fine and evrythiung its really nothing to worry about :]
Usually when waterpumps go back they make a SHHRHRRRHRRRRR kind of sound. One way to test your waterpump is by grabbing your fan and try tilting from the top forward or backward. If there is movement, its a water pump.
You pulled the cover off, but did you check your tensioners? Make sure they move freely.
yes, timing chain guides causing rattle. mine has been doing it for a couple of years now. In the summer when it idles down I can hardly hear it. When the AC kicks up the rpm it gets louder.
