I've been playing for more years than I care to say and about 8 years ago sought out the tab for this song online and taught it to myself. From many years playing, I had no trouble w/ fingering; my trouble was (& I have long fingers for a girl & from playing piano for years) some of the stretches were a bit much (esp on my Taylor, which has fat frets) I wish I could figure out an open tuning to do this so that my fingers don't have to be bent so oddly to get this down, or trade in the Taylor.
@onixtheone w/e is more comfy for u i dont hold most chords how its show to hold em, its just easier to switch chords sometimes holdin em a different way.
Good job dude! I actually learned this when it first came out 91 or 92? I played exactly the same way your doing it..I swear! I cant believe i forgot about this killer piece..This is going to help me learn it again, quickly..I didn't even know the name of this song, forgot) i just clicked it, cause satriani's name..Thanks!
WOW! I've always wanted to learn to play tears in the rain, thanks to you now I do, it was awesome of you to show everyone how to play it, Thank you very much, and I thought black bird was a challenge, ha
I learned stairway to heaven from you, and when I heard this song on my ipod today, i decided to learn it. I was glad to see you are teaching this one too!
Good job dude, I am a drummer/ guitarist and I had started to figure this song out by myself and got about half way through it and just gave up. If you like drum solos please check out mike pritchett drum solo you tube(comments welcome)
I also have an extremely short pinky finger compared to most people I've seen. Nice to know I'm not the only guitarist with this problem lol. Great lesson man. Always loved this tune.
i got the first bit down, still cant do th e stretch at the start i just kinda arpegiate it.PHEW!!!!!! theres a lota practise in this song, thanks justin
If your thumb is behind the neck and you're not touching the neck with your palm, it should be okay. You just need to keep trying and you'll get it eventually.
i was looking for somethign new coz i just got sultans of swing down and ive found this, thanks just, i realy am grateful and as soon as i get a bloody job ill sort you out some dosh
there is some kind of modulation going on in the song?i'm not sure but by ear seems that he kind of goes from A natural minor to A harmonic minor...it gives me these feel....whatever..great song,he is a genius
At 0:54 I find it easier to transition to the next chord if I use don't use my pinky and instead use my 4th finger that stays there for the next chord - it becomes an anchor that way. But I still can't play it on a steel string - only a classical. I love this lesson so much - thank you again for presenting this.
hey guys that chord at 3:43? make it easier on yourself and just play the fmaj7 open chord (003210). Same notes just a lot easier positioning. then the next chord is just adding the pinky on the second string third fret
hi, my name is Fernando, im from Belem city Pará state i live nearby the limits of amazonia rain forest, i sent a coment before, and now im here again to say thanks for the lesson!!
This is great...already started playing with some legit tab and found the changes a bit tricky. But a great lesson! Very clear and concise and spot on with the positions, etc. This is a great tune to warm up with...many thanks...good tip about the dynamics at the end aswell.
ahaha have u seen when he says:"i struggle a bit 'cause i've got the world's shortest little finger..weey!"ahaha it crackes me up i've seen that part like 4 times ahahaha anyway justin u rock. just respect for you.

Maybe you should buy a guitar and try to learn a few chords. I hear you can find these things late at night with infomercials. Guaranteed to teach you to play guitar in less than five minutes. Of course in your case it would be like double indemnity. Oh sorry you probably don't understand that. It would take you at least ten minutes to figure out that this is disgusting. This guy sucks. Are you sucking himLOLOLOLOLOL
also remember with this song guitar position is important. many people play with their guitar on their right leg. for this song, get the guitar on your left leg and the neck up high. it really helps with that long ass chord, your fingers will be able to stretch more easily. also in the video i posted your fingers all stay planted for all 3 of the beginning chords which makes it a lot easier, you can just slide them along the strings into place.
Great lesson. Straight forward and easy to follow. You're a good teacher. Very insightful regarding dynamics. I always stress this point with my students. Great job!

I think there's an easier way to switch from Dminor9 to C Major13 (05:05)
Dm9 :
1st finger : Bstring/6th fret
2nd finger : Estring/8fret
3rd finger : Gstring/9fret
(open Dstring)
then play the Cmajor13 just as Justin plays it
hope it was clear and will help some of you
