side one of this album from the 70s was perfection: '...Chicago.. would you please welcome from England:U...F..O' - Natural Thing, leading into something else (lovely keys), then You Can Rock Me & Dr Dr.What a side one.
Interesting to hear so many comments on airbrushed live albums. UFO claim that was one of the (many) beefs Schenker had to cause him to leave, the producer wouldn't let him fix his mistakes.
I don't know, obviously, if that's true or not but I will say this, you can't airbrush how tight they obviously were.
My all time favourite live album by a country mile.
Scorpions- Tokyo Tapes.....Strangers In The Night and Deep Purple- made in Japan the best 3 live albums Uli Jon Roth....Michael Schenker... Richie Blackmoore Great guitarists.....but it's all team work in a great band and these bands had it too bad the world didn't get to know the old Scorpions and UFO in their prime......sad sad
I was a senior at high school when this album was released. They were on top of the rock world after this release. Pound for pound, song for song, solo to solo, this album can stand up to anything ever recorded in "rock" history, live or studio. That includes Elvis, to Zeppelin.
@estinky Yeah I agree, this album rocked. UFO kicked ass in the 70's, funny how nobody in my circle of friends or in school knew who UFO was in those days. Everyone was into Styx,Bruce Springstein,Led Zepplin. Always thought Michael Schenker blew Jimmy Page away on the guitar.
Y'know what I absolutley love about this video, Lights out finishes and I'm all sad for a minute until Only you can rock me comes on and I'm all happy again! Ahhhhh, the magic of good music ;)
This, is the rock I am into. You can still find stuff like this, but it's difficult. This album just kills. I had a buddy of mine burn it down for me a few months ago...I knew a few of the songs and loved them, but this whole thing is a listen from beginning to end. As for the air brushed live stuff, doesn't matter. Those, for me, are some of the best albums...the live albums from the 70's/early 80's.
Still to this day - the BEST hard rock/metal guitarist out there! - bar none (and I've listened to quite a few)!
Mad Metal Mickey had it all...and the rest! - and he feckin' threw it all away in his early 20s after this brilliant effort!
Still waitin' though for someone to come along who can put so much feel, passion and emotion into their guitar playing as this man once did back in his day.
Gave up on holdin' me breath a long time ago, though...
I bought the album in 1980, not having heard of the band previously, but it looked "interesting". Completely blown away. One of my all time favourites.
Thank you so much this music and the post. I always loved UFO, I LIVE IN Oregon and not many people know who they are, why ? it stands up to anything out right now ,great live band, i also saw MSG unplugged it was amazing .
Top 10 Best live albums from 60's to 80's (in my opinion): UFO - Strangers in the Night, Kiss - Alive, Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same, Grand Funk - Live Album, Thin LIzzy - Live and Dangerous, Deep Purple - Made in Japan, Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo, Cheap Trick - Live At Budokan, Aerosmith - Live Bootleg and Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East. (in no particular order).
Easily ONE of the greatest live albums ever. However, let's not be too hasty to dismiss Deep Purple's Made in Japan, Emerson Lake & Palmer's Welcome Back My Friends, and YESSONGS
Shenker's solo in "Only You Can Rock Me" is one of the best leads EVER, executed hear to such perfection, it's hard to believe it's not overdubbed. (I know it's not)
Best live album, best voice at the time of recording and of course greatest guitar player on live recording ever Schenker. Plays like the guitar is singing.
i remember when i was 20 years of old at a friends party. This chap said to me have you heard of UFO and i replied no.He put this LP on his record player,Jesus it blew my mind away,Best underrated band ever, love them to this day
@edgardickens I was there in 1978 ,it was and alway's be a great heavy metal show....every thing was great atmosphere, warm drunk ass summer kickass showw..
@edgardickens 2 of my friends seen them at the Hammongd Civic Center, which was their gig right b4 the one you hear here. They both were blown away by the show. But, yeah Ive read that they doctored up the recording b4 it was released, as they do with all live albums. But what i think they did with this one was take tracks from other shows. For example, the verses and choruses of Lights out are probably truely live from chicago. But the solos could possibly be from the show my friends were at.
@edgardickens Pete Way mentions in this video that there are very few over dubs on the album. So it's essentially one of the very few truly live albums. run a search for this... "UFO [ ROCKUMENTARY,PART 5 OUT OF 5 ] " . It's also mentioned that Schenker was ticked off cuz the producer wouldnt allow him to redo any of his solos in the studio.
What I DON'T understand, is how UFO didn't really crossover to bigger success. Not even one gold album? I wonder how popular they were/are in the rest of the world? Someone mentioned they were a hit in Mexico... What about The UK? The rest of Europe?
WOW---Strangers in the Night--------1 of the greatest Live albums,ever--------I live for this shit.......hardly anybody gets it........phil mogg/schenker rule when it came to building a gritty hard sound..Fuck
What great memories. I have not listened to this in over 25 years! What a great album. When you sound better live then you do in the studio, that is a special band! When I was a kid, this live album along with "All the worlds a stage" and "Frampton comes alive" were the best live albums of the time.
Yes, this is a great album and I wore out my till I could't play it, anymore. But it isn't the best live album. Made in Japan by Deep Purple is better, but I'm not here to put this recording down. I love it to this day. Great memories..........old school stills rules...........the crap that is out now doesn't even come close to rocking.
big fan of kiss alive...aerosmith live bootleg...blue oyster cult some enchanted evening...this just bust ass every song orchestrated and full on energy... ...rock bottom version off this album is the most kickin ass "anthem" type song in rock history!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! UFO!!!
This is a hard rock staple. UFO literaly flys under the radar. Song writing is top notch. Schenker is in his early 20's playing well beyond his yrs. All his solos and melodies seem to be the right choice for the given song. I will be seeing him for the first time since 1984 july 31 2010 in NYC. Looking foward to being blown away like i was 25 yrs ago. Seen him twice in club size venues. Both times he was 2 ft in front of me. Im 46 yrs old and will be fighting my way up front once again!
One of the best times i had was at this show in Chicago , LOL yes i was one of them guys screaming in the back round on this toon god we had so much fun back then . UFO was one of the best live rock bands to see .
This album came out during my high school graduation year and I must say we we're blown away by the music and the amazing sound quality of this hard rock fiesta. There was nothing else to compare it too. Two of my favorite songs from this collection as well Amazing rock...Lights Out!!!!
@kentishbloke I was there 5th row center for this show in Chicago 1978... it was definitely Michael Shenker!!! One of the best live bands ever! I have seen then 10 times from the mid 70's to the early 80's this is one of the top live albums ever in my opinion.
One of the first bands I ever covered as a singer. One of the best songs ever with a fantastic lead. It is one of hard rocks best songs ever. Perfect keyboards, drums, vocals and bass. UFO fucken kicks some ass
A live act that obviously stands the toth of time, the whole shit is so brilliant and overseen, this album must be put besides stuffs like Slades Alive, The Who´s Live at Leeds and Dylans Hard rain:)
I have to agree with you believer06, Strangers in the Night, in my humble opinion is probably the best live album I have ever heard. Some bands actually sound better live and UFO is definitely one of them. I think 'One For The Road' by The Kinks pulls a very close second.
What am i the ONLY one who has listened to How The West Was Won by Led Zeppelin? But your telling me Whitesnake, Grand Funk, Thin-Lizzy, Judas Priest, Scoprions, and Bob Seagar are all better than ZEP?!? Are you serious?
You may have a good point with "HARD ROCK LIVE ALBUMS" but I like World Wide Live by they Scorpions, I was at that concert in San Diego. Made in Japan by Deep Purple rules.
Best live album ever: STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT UFO, best guitarist ever: MICHAEL SCHENKER!!
2.MSG- One night at Budokan. Other great live albums:Thin Lizzy-Live and dangerous, Rainbow-on stage,Scorpions- Tokyo Tapes, Judas Priest - Unleashed in the east.
A great commentary on the genre and the situation in Great Britain at the time. The Sex Pistols had released "Never Mind The Bollocks" the same year marking the end of the era of British Metal.
I love how Mogg forgets the words at 3:18 and sings, " ... moon in June," and THEY LEFT IT IN instead of having Mogg go back in later to overdub that line in the studio. How many bands would remain authentic like that?
I'd much rather have an honest, imperfect record than a 'fixed' perfect one that wasn't how they played it live. Bravo, lads.
@jelsma Yup. I have to agree. I can't ever think of a live album that comes close to this perfection. But not just cuz of Schenker. The whole band was PERFECT. Phil's voice is so awesome.
I love this band for one reason and one reason only - They used Terry Reid for loads of great backing vocals on 'High Stakes and Dangerous Men' - and he was fantastic!!!!!! 5* J :))

Yes!! This is the best performance of "Lights Out" ever! Thank you for uploading.
I crank this shit up so loud in my car that the windows rattle! And if someone don't like it, they can get out of the car.
MS kicks major ass here, I think we all agree.

I love this band for one reason and one reason only - They used Terry Reid for loads of great backing vocals on 'High Stakes and Dangerous Men' - and he was fantastic!!!!!! 5* J :))
