As for penalties: If you don't have insurance, and you get into an accident or develop a serious/expensive medical condition-- are we then supposed to say, "Sorry, you didn't pay in, so now you have to suffer/die"? It's not perfect to MAKE people get it or pay a penalty, but it's fair.

@notimetodd The situation with "health care" in the US is seriously screwed up and they keep making it worse. What I'm talking about is removing the source of the problem - government intervention. That is what CAUSES the astronomical prices and the perceived need for "insurance." We wouldn't need insurance if the cartel structure was broken. It's a protected industry. Making a few more tweaks isn't going to reform it. We have to restore the free market. People need to understand this.

I'm saying there should be coverage for people who can't afford it. Do you think the owner of the local pizza shop or mechanic (not franchise) can afford "free market" health care? 33% of the premium goes to the insurance companies. Many young adults think they don't need healthcare. A percentage of them will need it though, due to accident or illness.
