My laptop also did that text boot screen when I installed the video drivers, but it also does good without the video drivers, execpt that without the drivers I can see the Kubuntu boot screen(Kubuntu 11.04)
hello I have an old pc with windows Me on it. I have 20gb hard disk (one drive with 4gb and the other one with 16gb) I also have around 300mb RAM and a pentium II. Do you think ubuntu 10.10 will work ?
@1996BRECHT Hey, just a suggestion -- If Ubuntu doesn't work on your pent II, try xubuntu.. It's basically ubuntu, but with a much lighter-weight desktop.. I have successfully put it on a pent II before. Just keep in mind that the whole linux operating system, in some form or another, can run on basically anything.. Even old linksys wireless routers can run a type of linux os, that fits in 2MB flash chip! So, you can defiantly breath some sort of life into older pc's with linux.

@mktutt111 Well, XFCE has been getting fatter recently. It doesn't seem to work as well as it used to (I tested it on that system before, back with Xubuntu 7.10 and more recently with Xubuntu 9.04).
@philipkimbrell90 Thanks for reminding me about LXDE, because I had read some good things about LXDE but had not checked it out. My suggestion of Xubuntu to 1996BRECHT was only given based on my positive experience with that os on an older slower system.. I'm sorry if I seemed to imply that it would be the only system, or even best system for an older machine. I'm excited to hear about and try all of these various os's and have no doubt there are several very good ones for older machines.
@ipeters61 my comp is a 6 year old HP with 256mb of RAM running Windows XP that I got to duel-boot with Ubuntu and Windows XP. I still use my Belkin 805.11g USB Wireless Adaptor and it took me a few reboots but I got it to work. I used a guide to increase web speed and now I almost prefer Linux over Windows XP except for the issue of Steam on Playonlinux REFUSES to work with me so I would lose my Team Fortress 2 and Portal with Portal 2 on Preorder.
@1996BRECHT YOU CAN RUN linux mint LXDE version it is light weight and will run FAST on your system. Go to linux mint's website and download then burn the LXDE version. Linux mint is based on ubuntu. SAme software / repo / but comes with everything out the box. Flash / java / better drivers / codecs for media.. etc
@jcer93705 I actually am installing it on another box (Pentium III 1 GHz, 384 MB RAM, 20 GB HD) with an NVidia GeForce 4 MX440....let's see how this works out. :P
OH MAN i had that video card once long ago. Once creative lab soundcard manufacture had a blaster pc builtin blaster live came with remote and awesome case but i had that video card and i ran it in redhat linux operating system, awesome card in that time. Now damn be funny if the os support that video card LOL and running compiz hahahaha. You might can get away. I'm subscribing.

@1996BRECHT Try out Crunchbang 10 Statler, its based on Debian but its extremely lightweight, more lightweight than Xfce
91jmda 9 months ago
@91jmda I actually just installed Crunchbang on this system the other day. It seems to work just as well as Lubuntu, to be honest.
However, I got wireless headphones for Christmas, and I use this system as a "server" for my music on it.
