I love MATTIE WILLIAMS-HARPER! I thank GOD that these songs and singers have been recorded. I'm loving it. I used to hear these records as a kid; and see some of these singers in church. I definitely appreciate those moments and won't soon forget them.
Yeah, DaSourcepr06, I caught you directly in the act of loading a great and wonderful song by Mattie Harper. You are now under arrest for posting this great song and you shall receive a sentence of 5 stars from the SNOWMAN!!! lol.
She was born and died in Tennessee. First recorded with the Sallie Jenkins Singers of Philadelphia (a group that included the great Eugene Burke of the Rasberry Singers). Then recorded with Bradford before Marion recruited her to replace Esther Ford in the Stars of Faith. She had considered going into pop music though I never heard her sing it. After Marion left, Mattie liked to sing 'Surely God is Able" and "Traveling Shoes." As I said "Sit Down Servant" may be her best record.
Fans of this excellent singer should check out her recordings with Professor Alex Bradford and the Ladies of Music ("Come On Let's Go," "He Makes My Decisions for Me"). A live "Sit Down Servant," with the Stars of Faith, shows her at her growling, squalling, quartet-loving best. Before joining the Stars she sang with Imogene Green's group. You can hear a lot of both Marion and Imogene in Mattie's phrasing. RIP Mattie with your multi-colored, bruised mezzo voice.
Excellent.
