If you live in the outer suburbs these things are useless.Just waisted 300 bucks on this usb,it keeps cutting out and is slow.I went to telstra shop to buy an external antenna, but they have no idea when they will be receiving the next order of patch leads. So i had to buy on the internet. I am typing this post with my antenna connected to my ultimate usb and i am getting a pathetic 1.33mbs.I live in the western suburbs of Melbourne, only about 15k's.These things work fast in the city only.Useless
Well, I finally upgraded my crappy 7.2 to the Ultimate and I can say without a doubt, it is WAY WAY WAY faster. Before I got annoyed when the 7.2 slowed down to 100Kbs and now I get annoyed if the Ultimate slows below 5Mbs. This video downloaded in less than 2 maybe 3 seconds.... Much, much faster.
If i download a 800mb file using 20mbps or 5, it's not going to use more bandwidth, all it's doing is making the downloads faster, it's great for using things such as LimeWire and such where movies are big.
Ans you know something, BigPond have just lowered the prices again, they had a plan at a cost of $119.00 per month with 10GB of data, that plan was lowered to only $89.00 per month and they've added and extra 2GB.
So, now you save $30 dollars and get an extra 2GB of data!
These tests are false and misleading which is not uncommon for telstra, did he try to ping a US site? No. 99% of all web traffic you perform is to US sites. Did he test a multiplayer game? No. Did he test anywhere out of the CBD? No. Did he show an actuall download running? No. Unless you're a uni student surfing AUS sites only, this product is useless, and why would uni students pay for a service of lesser quality they get basically free in their campus housing?
When Telstra upgraded to 21mbps, i was getting speeds of around 8/9mbps, that's faster than anyone has ever used on mobile broadband, i also just upgraded to the 42mbps one and am receiving around 14 to 18mbps (inside my home).
Out on the street will show you better speed because there is nothing in the way, in the house the device has to reach around things and such.
i have the Telstra 21 elite usb i get an average speed of 7.1 with speedtest and have downloaded a file from gamearenag at 1mb a seconds this just using the 21 elite usb, looking forward to receiving my ultimate usb this week.
Just ran the speed test again... 0.31Mbs... Useless, and I'm paying $150 a month for this rubbish... Seriously, I might just pay it out and go naked ADSL. Your video wont even play until it's fully downloaded... 4 minutes and counting.
@myvistahosting Actually what I meant to say is he is an 'engineer' according to them, doesn't mean he is a QUALIFIED engineer however, all these companies make up fake engineering roles like 'technical engineer' 'sales engineer' and other bullshit, they are not recognised by engineers australias as someone who did a maths intensive 4 year engineering degree
He has to be, i have two sisters that work for Telstra, all person(s) that work in the network area, operational, management or control and such have to Qualified with some type of education degree, Telstra has a major waiting list and as we all know, only the best on the list get the jobs, that's because they want the best network. this guy however might work in the office where they design and control the network and such, possibly the Global Operations Centre.
@myvistahosting What you described are probably people with IT degrees, possibly cisco etc but they are not engineers, there is a big difference.
my issue was with people who put engineer in their title when they are not actual engineers recognised by engineers australia, they are just glorified IT guys, I am almost certain this is what this guy is, along with the rest of the 'engineers' at ISPs.
Test what speeds you get out Hillside way and let me know. I'm currently using the 7.2 USB modem and am very disappointed with the speeds I get. On average I get between 500Kbs and 1.6Mbs, but I often clock under 100Kbs which is pathetic. As an example; your 2:02 video, played in 360p, took about 3 minutes to download. I wont be re-signing my contract when this ones up.
@TheAlphaMale316 the new modem is way faster than the old 7.2 modem and you should expect much higher speeds. Stay tuned for a road test comparing the 7.2, 21 and the new 42. Cheers Sam
Is there is a technical spec for this device or any newer? What category HSPA device is it?

@b0niK1337
Telstra also upgraded it's Melbourne speed last year from 30mbps to 100mbps and speeds are around 70mbps.
You know those speeds are only available in Melbourne, other cities such as Perth Brisbane, Sydney and Adelaide don't have them.

Not bad... But won't these dual channel jobs create dual congestion twice as fast?
tin2001 1 year ago 4
what command did you enter in the command prompt to get the speedtest going?
realdevl1 1 year ago 3
@realdevl1 He is using an inhouse app most likely, it uses UDP which is cheating as well, not to mention he isn't even really an engineer

And why do you say that, he says he is, and all the engineer and technology staff are based in Melbourne, not just because it's HQ are based their.

test was done using UDP instead of TCP... results will show a lot faster because the packets don't need to handshake...?
