best stuff on the market is BETAKONTAKT. Its great stuff. about £50 a tub but goes a long way and is ideal for over skimming artex. obviously make sure the high points on the artex are scraped back then apply betakontakt and leave over night. its a pink colour when applied and goes a deep red when ready to be scimmed on. Its a german make hense the spelling. unibond tends to bring the artex back to life witch causes alot of problems where as betakontakt doesn't, it'l leave a dry roughcast key.
liked the extra feature of all those trowel ``gouges`` on the ceiling. Were they optoinal or did the customer want the ceiling as rough as a badgers arse ?? Weekend cowboy after some beer money by the looks of it.
@ chantoab. Totally agree with you chantoab. But in some circumstances a 50/50 mix will work as well and you wont get any shrinkage. Main thing is where getting a debate going and that's how we all learn. Thanx for the comment.
Basic stipple will only be 2mm - 3mm deep if done properly, scrape off any larger stipples, coat the whole ceiling with a pva based glue let that dry then give another coat of glue prior to plastering with multi-finish. Give a tight coat then when tacky give a second coat. And finish as normal. This aint a DIY job leave it to the pros unless you are very brave!! A standard sized ceiling will be finished in roughly 4 hours by a decent plasterer. I have been plastering 22 years this works!!
Mate seriously some artex ceilins ive been on are like 10 15mm thick. also some of them are emulsion based , so if you unibond them to much they will just drop off. The best way is to mix a 50/50 bond and skim and 2 coat. Then unibond again the next day and skim in two coats. I know it sounds long winded but if you just go on without controlling the suction and then just skim, you will indeed get shrinkage which will cause cracks. Also alot of these artex ceiings were there to cover rough work.
@MultiSpread Mate i totally agree with 50/50 mix on first coat. It beefs out the skim, but you can flatten down nice afterwards. I've been doing it for ages now and wouldn't go back. I think the fellas that tell ya its waste of time are the same ones who tell ya to one coat everything. lol
Dont't need to bond ceiling out unless its a bit bumpy, all you needed to do is scrape any rough parts of the artex off then unibond the whole lot a couple of times then skim straight away onto it.Bonding it a waste off time.
Lol I did skim over the artex ceiling. It was the walls that were dry lined and then wallpapered over that we boarded over. In case you never knew these old houses from the late 70;s 80's period were dot and dabbed then taped and jointed then papered over so the only way to get around it for a nice finish was to board on top then skim over.
Nice music video...so what youve done is board over artex and skimmed..cant you actually skim over artex or did u do a 2 week board and skim course....gimme a bell if you want to learn how to do it correctly
That's right chantoab, what i can't understand if your going to dry line the walls do it before you reskimm ceiling then you can skrimm joints.
