What if you dont have pins at the bottom of the bridge. My guitar just has this weird thingo which is attatched to the string..

This method will put the ball ends at the end of the pins, not snug against the bridge plate. If they aren't snug against the plate, the strings will move, which will erode the bridge plate and detune the guitar.

You need to tug the string while sliding the pin into place. The pin and string should *not* move together over the last ~1/4" of travel: the pin moves while the string stays put.
