The article on the lewrockwell site just blew me away. It's amazing that it was published in 1970! The more things change, the more they stay the same. It's a pity there aren't more people with his intellect around. The world would be in much better shape!
Socialism took me a while, too. Interesting reading, but I can't say I absorbed the material nearly as well as I would like. I'm going to re-tackle it eventually. Right now I am reading through "Austrian Perspective on the History of Economic Thought" by Murray Rothbard, which I'd recommend as well.
@diogeneslaertius666 of course we would need that boon to compensate for the external, artificial and imposed stress that would result from this act of defiance...
also we would require confidence in whatever leaders made it possible
the FED is a clearinghouse: it is this tactical, logistical momentum engine, which reaches into all sectors of the global economy via its true structure, which extends out into the global banking Cartel, that is the real mechanism of power.
lets shut it down and put them all in the treasury, lets then draw that down to the state level and make the states handle the problem at the local level, as they are now of a much larger size
Returning to the gold standard would be a dream come true. The sad thing is, we will be forced to return to it, once the fiat currency collapses under the overwhelming weight of debt and inflation.
Andrew Jackson killed the last attempt of the moneychangers to destroy America with their central bank in 1836. He did such a good job it took them 77 years to regroup, but they got us again in 1913. I think they had a 100 year charter. We need to make sure that charter is not renewed. Andrew Jackson must be rolling over in his grave having his picture on the $20 "Federal" Reserve Note, but I'm sure he would have been ok having his picture on the $20 Gold certificate that proceeded it.
You may already be aware, but the Maria Therasa silver thaller is an interesting coin, still in use in some countries and I believe still being minted with an old date.
Translating from the original Marxist doublespeak, it was Karl Marx who said, "From each hard worker according to their ability. To each free loading bum according to their greed." :-/ Translating that into today's OWS-speak, "The street is my port-a-potty."
I know some people refer to the Fed as a "private bank"... but I prefer to hear it called a "cartel" like you just mentioned. Who else could print money out of thin air for PENNIES and then loan it to YOU at a high rate of interest? Ron Paul says the inflation tax is the most evil of ALL taxes, because it primarily hits the Middle Class and is never looked at as a "tax"... These rat faced bastards in the Federal Reserve are a crafty bunch for sure.
I do not know if you have watched this:

Is a cartoon that explains how and the FED and, more importantly, the international banking cartel are messing up with the US economy.

The best part of getting rid of the FED is that we can get rid of their bulldog the IRS then too!
