Reminds me of Entombed a little bit, which is awsome. I love both old and new Amorphis tho theyre just really different. What they did was only get more and more progressive after tales of the thousand lakes and even more so on elegy, which are both my favorite albums by them as well
Sounds like a mix between Death and Doom. This is incredibly similar to Tales from the Thousand Lakes record. You can almost hear the roots from what they once were.
I'm glad you added the lyrics to the description, because it's one of the few songs where the music really puts you right where lyrics are. You can feel all the twists and turns of this battle, and certainly sense the cold steel. Shame Amorphis changed their style, they really had something going here.
Indeed. I've listened various types of metal and plenty of artist through the years, and this is one of those albums, I always get back to. Timeless masterpiece
fuck I'm only 15 but this still brings me nostalgy. When I was only starting to know about metal I just borrowed random Amorphis record I found from the shelves of library and it was this Karelian Isthmus. I was totally astonished when I put this to player!! This sounded nothing like the amorphis I knew. Still one of my most favourite melodic DM stuffs.
Funny how much oppinions differ, I have "Tales from a Thousand Lakes" and "Skyforger" and for me Skyforger is ten times better then Tales from a Thousand Lakes. The clean vocals of their current singer are SO powerful! He has such an amazing and impressive voice! He can do everything from soft clean to powerful clean to rough clean vocals to growls. And the keys play a much more important role on Skyforger then on the Tales-Album, making the whole thing insanely melodic.
You're wong wrong wrong. You had to be there and buy Tales of Thousand Lakes when there are no bands that makes music like that in the world. Unlike Skyforger, where 10 thousands of bands makes keyboard metal and they are good at it. Tales from the Thousand Lakes was unique. You could say "Dynamite is such a poor weapon compared to atom bomb", but when Nobel developped it, it was unique and caused great things in mining/construction in addition to war. You dont compare albums to 15 years ago
So what? Black Sabbath was also unique when they started (or so I've been told, I'm too young to know) out, does that mean I have to like Black Sabbath because they were unique? IMO not. I will not deny they are a pioneers of metal and all that, but that doesn't mean I have to love their music. Same with Amorphis. And dynamite IS a poor weapon compared to atom bomb, but that doesn't mean that the invention of dynamite wasn't genius. But you don't have to like something because it's genius.
@xxxhentaikingxxx: I think it does make sense. See I don't like atom boms either, but from a scientific point of view it was a genius achievement. Or for a music related example I can appreciate that Bach was a musical genius but I don't like his music. And that's the case here I simply don't like the voice of this singer, no matter how genius the music is. So I'm not saying it's not good music, I'm just saying I don't like it.
You are damn right, this reminds me of days spending in the record store, just to find that album. I found it, in 1992 and 1994. The owner of the shop must still frown at me when i come along. Spending days in a record store got me alot of more and better music, but the first 2 albums of amorphis are still amazing.
i wouldnt say they sold out, but theyre newer style is nothing compared to this, thousand lakes and elgy. Those will always be their best, especially thousand lakes
hey mate. cheers for putting this up... these are the first songs i have heard from Amorphis... I was just wondering wat albums i should buy and listen to in order to enjoy these guys best... that would be great.. Cheers
I prefer the older Amorphis of the two first full-lengths, but when there is only one original member left, you can't expect anything alike to the first products. They still got the lyrics right, though. Some songs even got very strong Death metal sound like "Weaving Incarnation" for the last album.
"Sell-out" is highly over-used word. Just because band want's to conquer new spheres, experiences and changes for their own decision, doesn't make them sell-outs. They wanted this change
Sorry, my bad again. Well, anyway. The change was due to THEY wanted it, and not due to the audience wanted it. It usually goes like this with the bands that change their style.
I say they changed for the best, Tomi is an awesome death vocalist as well as bringing the emotional vocals that has made the last two albums masterpieces, I hope Skyforger is going to be just as good or better.
Yes, lets hope that. But the truth is : They will never make another album, that could match or exceed the two first. But yes, the developement has surely been for the better since "Far from the Sun". That wasn't too good an album. The two last were way better.
The new sound isn't amongst my favourites, but atleast the lyrical themes have and some death grunts too have survived. I wouldn't use the word "Sell-out" of Amorphis yet.
Juu.
this song is my ever and ever favourite...since 10 years i hear this song and get never enough...karelian isthmus was one of their greatest albums they made...epic...Hail Death metal!

And I have to say that the fact it was this exact album and not of their later poppier stuff has made me sure that Death Metal is my destiny!!
Jakkethemental 2 years ago 2
It's not melodic Death Metal..it's Death Metal with Doom elements to it
Tombking2 2 years ago
ok whatever..it sounds quite melodic but maybe your description is better(no painful associations to melodic ''death metal'' like In Flames etc.
