i came here to say i wish i grew up in the sixtys and fifties. apparently, im not the only person who thinks that. i guess this song just makes you want to experience those times
Did anyone notice that the accronym for this song is OTL?? How ironic that an emoticon that's supposed to signify failure should be the accronym for this amazing song... :D
Every classic song I hear on youtube has people commenting how they love oldies but not new, and how they wished they were born in that time, Well thinking about it music doesnt age only people do.
Is it possible to just enjoy a classic song without endlessly doting on how "great" the 60s were? There was certainly as much suffering and injustice in the world then as now. And as for the current stock of tuneless rubbish, well, I'm sure more than a few older folks said the same thing about those rascally lads from Liverpool as well.
Music is to be heard. As much as I love old songs like this I still enjoy new songs and various genres of music. When I was younger I couldnt really understand old songs but Im 24 now and as I grow old I feel like Im more into old music. However, I still have parts of my heart for other kind of music. My point is, music is music and it has its own listener, however there is good quality and bad quality lol
Hey you all in Wink, West Texas, its time to send forth another talent like your boy Roy Orbison; this country is in dire need for some good old fashioned Rock & Roll. So come on West Texas get on the stick and start creating!
A voice of an angel full of depth and emotion. very few people in this world can sing this beautifully. Roy Orbison for me will always be the greatest rock and roll artist.
@longview1987 one u cant believe anything on Wikipedia plus im in a history of rock and pop class and we just got done with the 50s and his song was published in the 50s and have you even found out what Wikipedia stands for it stands for meant to be changed
@RATXinfection If you don't believe Wikipedia then look at the dates. Roy Orbison was born 1936. In 1960 he would have been 24. That's a likely age for a career breakthough.
@MrSwanley ok look im in a class that just teaches us about this stuff nothing else there might be or probably is different versions but this song came out in the late fifties but im getting sick and tired of getting a comment back telling me this and that it even says in the text books in that class it came out in the late 50s
@RATXinfection Roy Orbison quite possibly wrote this song in the late 50's, who knows? but it was published and performed for the first time in 1960. There have been other versions, but all are post 1960, naturally, since nobody else could perform it before it existed. If you are going to reference a textbook then please be specific! - name of book, page number and an actual quote. Anything else is BS.
@MrSwanley the book is called history of rock n roll and im not going to remember the page or quote because were done with that part a while ago now were in the British invasion where the Beatles and the rolling stones come in
superb song, superb voice, superb artist... that's 'classic' right over there... this song deserves so much respect that even bruce springsteen payed homage to it in 'thunder road'... roy gets everything right here... the main thing is he connects. with the lonely...
I also wish that I was there. In that time period. I would have so much fun. more fun than I am having now. Because in the century there seems to b nothing fun and exciting. I'm sorry to offend anybody. But that's just the way that I feel about today. Nothin exciting on the radio nothin exciting on tv.
@maddsmakeup I was born in 1965, I am 46 in December 2011. The best music is 50's, 60's, and 70's that's the only music I listen to. I have heard a bit of todays music and it is a load of tuneless rubbish done by people with less talent than a goldfish.
@Davewise1965 It really doesn't sound like your giving modern music a fair chance. It's not as if everyone in the musical world all of a sudden lost talent come the advent of 1980. That is exactly the assertion you are making. You even admit "I have heard a BIT of todays music" as opposed to saying you gave it a fair run for a while and decided you liked older styles. There are people who agree with you that still make music. Are you so enamored in your hey-day that you can't find new artists?
@LoneQuietus I have heard enough of todays music and I still say that todays music does nothing for me and it is not the kind of music I would want to listen to for very long. Music now is all computers and technology. A lot of so called artists now lip sync on stage, but can they actually sing live and sound good ? Also a lot of the lyrics in todays songs are about fighting and violence which is just not my scene at all. I still say 50's, 60's, and 70's music is best. Each to their own choice.
@Davewise1965 Let me start off by saying that in comparison to your generations music, I am very embarrassed of the majority of mine. LMFAO, Ke$ha, Justin Bieber, all that stupid pop, I hate it all. Yes this type of music was totally important for our culture and it was amazing, but I'm just saying that there are tons of undiscovered artists out there today and even popular ones that are experimenting with new styles and taking music to new places. Just because it's new doesn't make it bad.
@JamaicanLambsWool Let me start off by saying that I have never heard of the people you have mentioned. I am entitled to my opinion and you are entitled to your opinion. I still say that the music of the 50's, 60's, and 70's will still be remembered and listened to long after todays music has been forgotten, infact that is the case right now.
@Davewise1965 If you haven't heard of any of those people that's a good thing, you're lucky. Like I said I hate that pop bs. And regardless of how it will be remembered you weren't saying that, you were saying how all music today is bad. I was merely disagreeing.
@Davewise1965 I just wanted to throw this out there....My dad is 61 years old and he enjoys today's music, right now he is enjoying a song called "Moves like Jagger" which is a really catchy top 40 song by a band called Maroon 5. His favourite band is Pink Flyod but he also loves, evanescence, radiohead...what I'm trying to say is that It shouldn't matter what era good music is, every era (even todays) has it's good music, why box yourself into certain era's when theres good music everywhere?
@Davewise1965 I appreciate what you say here. I'm 62 and was in junior high when this was at its most popular so I remember it well. I like music from all eras but I'm nostalgic for this stuff and I do think it's objectively very good!
@Ellie49 Thanks for your reply. I know what you mean, I think the music of the 50's, 60's, and 70's had so much more to it than todays music. I have heard todays music and it does nothing for me at all. I think that singers in those days had genuine talent but todays music is mostly done by technology, not talent. I know the technology we have now wasn't invented in those days. Then again I suppose everyone has the right to like what they like.
Here's a place in time that society forgot. When music was cool, groovy & innocent. Lyrics were clean and people were pure and unspoiled. Unlike today how media serves our kids a bunch of FILTH where lyrics of gang-sta rap & hip-hop are full of profanity, recording artists are horny sexual beings portrayed in videos & pop stars are admired for getting in trouble with the law - WHAT kind of CRAP is that ?? Just citing how societal erosion is deteriorating the very fabric that holds us together.
If it only takes 2:30 to say what you came to say, then the song is 2:30. And that's how it works. Catering to marketing weasels never made a good record.
Stop the fighting over new age vs old age music, music evolves & it changes. Back in the 60's i'm sure old timers were complaining about that "new age music" of the 60's...Lmfao, I like every type of music; new and old. I am wise enough to separate the poppy cliche songs from the real music with meaning and values. Music hasn't gone to shit, you just haven't looked hard enough
Roy died barely over a year before I was born. It's a shame, because his songs, especially Only The Lonely got me through highschool. I wore that 45 out. That song made me realize I wasn't and still am not the only one who's lonely. If I could say anything to Mr. Orbison, it would be "thank you".
@Kolfritz Hi. Lonlieness knows no age. Hang in there because you never know when you'll meet someone and your personal lonliness with end. Lots of folks feel unloved, but tomorrow could be your day, so don't give up! Keep looking for love and you'll find it some day. Lamar
@Iwatchthesevids Obviously, you say that because you have some underlying psychological issue. Moreover, that is a pitiful excuse of a comeback. Me a 'wienie'? I think not.
I was playing for Conways son Michael in the 70s Roys son wes was working at the 11th frame I told him how great his dad was. sure wish i'd met Roy.Wow his music lives forever.
this has been an all time favorite of mine and this particular singer can hit such a wide range of musical chords... he does this song justice and when im alone and feeling down i do play this song as i am tonight
im 14 and im only saying my age becuz i dont like wen older people that grew up wid music like this alwayz have 2 insult music now-a-days and say all kids these's dayz dont know wad real music is. some of us do ok! seriously i love music like dis n i alwayz listen 2 it just becuz i grew up in a different generation thats different then urs doesnt mean that u should insult everything about it, especailly the kids who grow up in it becuz were not makin the music the companies r.
@metalslayer95 yeahh....i know how 2 spell i have a 99 in ela -___- but if im not in skool i have no need 2 do dat ,if i have 2 constantly right proper in skool i would like 2 have a break once in a while -__- seriously. anyway i feel the same way!!! it wuz so nice back den n music was wayy better! <3 :DD
Roy is the best singer and certainly left his mark on music history. This song takes me back to when I was a teenage and Roy had a tv show in midland, texas. We never missed an episode.
I'm 13. I like this music WAY more than I do current music... Do you know why? Because the only songs you can find now-a-days is songs about sex and drugs that repeat them selves endlessly. I appreciate Roy Orbison and all the other great singers; not crack and prostitutes.
@IMVEGITARIAN Honestly, nobody cares about how old you are, music crosses boundaries of age so don't try to glorify yourself by thinking you're special.
@DragomirJtac I don't plan on making myself seem special. Nor do I plan on instigating a fight. Please; don't reply to this message. I have no desire to argue with you.
@DragomirJtac well if you dont care, we (the 'kids') care. daily we get laughed at or made fun of because we llisten to other things then usual children. so we have the right to let people know we are proud of our taste of music and do not attract to what people say.
Greatings, Leroy.
(didnt mean to offend anyone, just letting know what is happening what you probably don't see)
@DragomirJtac I'm not arguing. Just letting people know that there are 2 sides of a story.
and seriously, saying I'm to young for whatever you say is your problem. sure I have enough knowledge to outsmart grownups. You have no right to judge me, because'I'm not judging any ff you.
@Leroyfis how the fuck u gonna be proud of your taste in music. you're an idiot. that's like me being proud of the fact that i like sushi. somebody give me a treat cuz i like sushi and that deserves a reward and i'm proud of myself for liking sushi. gtfo leroy. you're a fucking idiot.
@DragomirJtac You're comment is pathetic. That kid is special for realizing the poison of modern music, and understanding the true spiritual essence behind what real music is. You're very tough, browbeating a 13 year old. Thank God people like that individual maintain the tradition of good music.
The "you're" in the beginning is improper; I intended to say "You're pathetic." I implore you to point out one other syntactic mistake in that comment.
@DragomirJtac Exactly, everyone my age always bangs on about how young they are to like this kind of music, completely forgetting that a hell of a lot of it was written FOR people our age. It's hardly surprising that they like it...AND it's annoying to talk about.
Roy Orbison is nostalgia in the ultimate for us who listened to our novel batteried transitor radios in the parks during hot summer nights --those radios may not have been stereo but the music was heavenly!
I wish I could go back for just one summer in the 60's~walking to the local pool, hanging with your friends and listening to Roy Orbison and Stevie Wonder!
Back in the day you might never have heard of Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, or any rockabilly acts because they played bar shows and late night radio when teenie booper would be in bed.
I love this song!!! I hate that the songs I like the most seem to be not long enough, and the songs I can't stand last soooo long!!! This song is just so awesome! :D
My mum loves Roy Orbison, reminds me of being a kid in the 80's,would always here the Big O on his original albums,my mums got loads of 50's & 60's original vinyl!
Except for the ridiculous echo-chamber, this is very well recorded.

" Roy Orbison the greatest and most distinctive I have ever heard"~Elvis Presley
yendor1232 6 months ago
Roy is the best singer and certainly left his mark on music history. This song takes me back to when I was a teenage and Roy had a tv show in midland, texas. We never missed an episode.
TheSidgem 6 months ago
PBS did a retrospective on Roy Orbison. I recommend it.
lskarin 6 months ago
I'm 13. I like this music WAY more than I do current music... Do you know why? Because the only songs you can find now-a-days is songs about sex and drugs that repeat them selves endlessly. I appreciate Roy Orbison and all the other great singers; not crack and prostitutes.
IMVEGITARIAN 6 months ago 4
@IMVEGITARIAN Honestly, nobody cares about how old you are, music crosses boundaries of age so don't try to glorify yourself by thinking you're special.
DragomirJtac 6 months ago 53
@DragomirJtac I don't plan on making myself seem special. Nor do I plan on instigating a fight. Please; don't reply to this message. I have no desire to argue with you.
IMVEGITARIAN 6 months ago 3
@IMVEGITARIAN We care, You attacked no one and gave us your point of view, now you are standing on the higher ground by your reply. :-)
Honeysucklebommie 6 months ago
@IMVEGITARIAN then u should have just stfu
mikesaechao1 5 months ago
@DragomirJtac well if you dont care, we (the 'kids') care. daily we get laughed at or made fun of because we llisten to other things then usual children. so we have the right to let people know we are proud of our taste of music and do not attract to what people say.
Greatings, Leroy.
(didnt mean to offend anyone, just letting know what is happening what you probably don't see)
Leroyfis 6 months ago
@Leroyfis again, I understand that I must wait for you to grow up because you don't understand, you are too young to be arguing on youtube
DragomirJtac 6 months ago
@DragomirJtac I'm not arguing. Just letting people know that there are 2 sides of a story.
and seriously, saying I'm to young for whatever you say is your problem. sure I have enough knowledge to outsmart grownups. You have no right to judge me, because'I'm not judging any ff you.
Good day to you.
Leroyfis 6 months ago
@Leroyfis sigh knowledge doesn't outsmart people son, understanding does
DragomirJtac 6 months ago
@Leroyfis how the fuck u gonna be proud of your taste in music. you're an idiot. that's like me being proud of the fact that i like sushi. somebody give me a treat cuz i like sushi and that deserves a reward and i'm proud of myself for liking sushi. gtfo leroy. you're a fucking idiot.
mikesaechao1 5 months ago
@DragomirJtac You're comment is pathetic. That kid is special for realizing the poison of modern music, and understanding the true spiritual essence behind what real music is. You're very tough, browbeating a 13 year old. Thank God people like that individual maintain the tradition of good music.

The "you're" in the beginning is improper; I intended to say "You're pathetic." I implore you to point out one other syntactic mistake in that comment.
getdjman 5 months ago
@DragomirJtac Have you failed my challenge?
getdjman 5 months ago
@DragomirJtac Exactly, everyone my age always bangs on about how young they are to like this kind of music, completely forgetting that a hell of a lot of it was written FOR people our age. It's hardly surprising that they like it...AND it's annoying to talk about.
