Kind of a silly video but it's good that he's sharing whats going on and seems excited about the end of DADT. Some of the comments on here are just wrong. Im not against people thinking this way and doing things but it truely hurts the military image when people flamboyantly broadcast this garbage on Youtube. It does nothing more than draw attention that is not needed. After the repeal of the DADT, I'm ending my service, not because it was bad that it happened or anything but when I return home people automatically call me F***OT and G*Y even though I am straight. The repeal of the DADT destroyed what honorable image the military had left.
@SamTheDragon31 Not a single word in your post is true. People probably call you faggot because they see the deeply closeted self loathing homosexual that you are. People like you destroy the honorable image of the military. I'm happy you ended your service, but please don't stop there, go ahead and end your life too!
@benlb9 Open up a military text book sometime and just look at how far off the military is from following its own laws and regulations. Not stating that this is the cause for the military's downward spiral but it does highlight the notion that the people running the military don't give to rats about how it looks or how its ran. Its better when people just keep shut mouth about what they really are, it makes the work enviroment actually decent vise expressing oneself and being riddiculed
France has had gays in the military since Waterloo. That's why we always have to go and save their asses.all they know how to do is crap their panties. Uuulalahhh
I remember we were forced to go to this briefings during deployment. Alot of us were angry since most of us didn't think it was a big deal and was more concerned in going back to sleep instead of coming in the conference room during our day off.
Segregated showers are already there. Between men and women. It's there because of natural sexual urges. Because of that, as a gay man myself, I think segregated showers for gays would be just fine to eliminte harrassment and possible homophobic gay bashings. You can bet it will happen. It will just take one homophobe to freak out when he knows a gay guy is in the shower with him and all hell will break loose. We need it more for safety than anything else. What do you think?
It reminds me of when they used to give the safety briefings on sexual harrassment, racism and homosexual conduct all jumbled together. The NCO giving the brief would try to spend the least amount of time posible on homosexual conduct while taking the rest of it for sexual harrassment. It used to piss me off because it felt as if anything that had to to with being gay was to be easily dismissed period. Oh well, glad I was able to finish my contract with no trouble.
You are amazing for your bravery. Don't give up, don't quit. There are millions of Americans who think you are great and love that you represent us. Do what is best for you, but never forget we support you, always!
And if there were only some way of contriving that a state or an army should be made up of lovers and their beloved, they would be the very best governors of their own city, abstaining from all dishonour, and emulating one another in honour;and when fighting at each other's side, although a mere handful, they would overcome the world. For what lover would not choose rather to be seen by all mankind than by his beloved. He would be ready to die a thousand deaths. - Plato "Symposium"

I appreciate your attention to detail. ;-)
But what you're SAYING is what brings people back. Even when you were just a "talking torso" (no offense :-) ), your words have always been heartfelt, inspirational, and above all, TRUE.
Repealing DADT, at any point in the future, would be like repealing women's suffrage, black civil right's acts, etc. It would be such an obtuse and useless step backward, not to mention outright stupid. I'd like to believe that, as a country, our political leaders can understand, permanently, that people who want to serve their country in the armed forces should be allowed to do so uniformly without who they love hindering that service. So basic.
YOU GOT GUTS! I find it comforting and refreshing to hear you open up and speak about yourself on such a raw and tender subject. You took the words right out of my mouth with pretty much everything you've said so far, and it's ironic how I have so many similar life situations and realizations. I've got two questions: What's the deal with gay people not getting health coverage in the military? Are you worried at all about the future, after coming to terms with being gay and all that it entails?
I think you are very brave, bright, positive, and intelligent man and anyone would be lucky to be a part of your life. That is the message I am taking away from this!

@sloturle Uh... there are already gay people showering with straight people, I don't see how the straight people's ignorance helps anything. And I imagine the same rules of etiquette, protocol, and sexual relationships between officers will still apply to everyone.
@Pr0fessorScience they do not allow men and woemn to shower or live together. why should we have to live and shower with openly gay service members? the military has a lot of rules governing the way service members are supposed to interact with each other....getting them to conform to those rules is difficult....now we have queers thrown into the mix.
@sloturle Nudity doesn't have to be sexual. My friend went to europe and he went into a changing room that was one room for men AND women. In parts of Africa women can go topless, and I am certain the men that live there don't find it arousing. because to them it's just natural. Nudity is only sexual if people MAKE it sexual. Gay men and lesbians have already seen their own bodies so they aren't going to stare at every naked person they see.
Having served under DADT in the Navy, I'm glad to hear that nonsense is over. Congrats to you and all the other gay and lesbian people currently serving on finally being able to be open about who you are! :)
I'm not gay but I want to tell you I wished I could have helped you in some way to get through this. I'm happy you guys don't have to hide anymore and I think there are millions of us that feel that way all over the world. They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger and hopefully you feel that way in this case. I feel privileged to have been able to watch you go through this journey but I think you are alright now and from what I can tell a very strong man for it. Thank you for serving.
You are very brave and I support ALL human beings who serve our country, regardless of their sexual preference. Thank you for your service, I would be proud to serve with you.
this is very therapeutic and I think it's very smart. Like I'm sure you feel so much better about having told the internet and like getting it off your chest. This'll make it easier when you decide to open up to others. Congrats man and thank you for your service.
Thank you. I appreciate your service to the country I love, and the service to her through these videos. What you've done with your vlog is really historic. What an embarrassment if DADT were ever reinstated. I don't think the Supreme Court would permit it were a re-instatement of DADT ever passed and challenged. The troops who serve our country deserve the full protection of the Constitution they fight to preserve, including the Fourteenth Amendment. This is why DOMA must soon die, too.
You do America proud and have more bravery than you know. I am proud to have you in the military and am more appreciative of this country because people like you will make life better in the USA. All my best to you, and many THANKS!!!
Hang in there. I'm sorry that you are discouraged by the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" training. Just know that your gay community is rooting for you. And I am rooting for you. You are a brave soldier.
Thank you so much for giving up a summary of your DADT briefing. For a non-military person like myself who is gay and is invested in this topic, it's very refreshing and interesting to see the affect of the repeal on the "ground level" so to speak. Because even though there is the outlying statement of equal rights for the LGBT community with the repeal, in the end it's soldiers like you that it's really all about. God Bless you and thank you. :)
Important clarification: You CAN be persecuted for being gay outside the military. Much of the country does not consider "sexual orientation" to be a protected class (like race, age, gender, etc). So, when you re-enter civilian life, keep an eye on the protections offered by your particular employer, city or state.
With that said, I'm not trying to minimize the extent the difficulties of being gay and in the military. Just trying to give you a heads-up.
you are a very brave man for doing these videos for your self and your fellow gay community. your videos are very helpful and you make me proud to be gay. i plan on joining the military come next year and by you telling me this has helped me out alot! thanks for the friend invite keep doing what your doing your videos are amazing ill be sure to promote you on my videos if you dont mind me doing so.
thanks for the video! you're great! tell me, i'm wondering, what's the actual atmosphere in your unit regarding the discussion of personal relationships? is the whole discourse of whose-girlfriend-does-what and who-f*s-whom among servicemen that proliferated? and is it conceivable to be silent/neutral when such talks do occur or would it be considered an automatic coming out? thanks for the answer!
I don't mind the quality. The first thing that I thought of when I saw it was that you just didn't have the time. I know being a military man is time consuming.
I'd first like to say that it's really cool u made this video, people always seem to toss out their opinions on DADT, but none of them are in the military. I had to go thru the same training myself, surprisingly (or not) the comment I heard most from my buddies in my unit was "let's get married and claim eachother as dependents so we can get more money" It was funny and we all laughed... I digress, my question: after they repeal DADT are u going to stay in as an openly gay servicemember?
@AreYouSuprised i used to think only people that are ugly that didnt grow up correctly become gay. but you dont look ugly and from your other vid it looks like your family has unconditional love for you. why do you record most your videos without your face.
Your videos have really touched me. I feel so bad, why can't you have the freedom to serve you country and do the job you love and not ever have to worry about who you are. You have my support and my thoughts go out to you and all other men and women in the world going through similar circumstances. I wish I could give you a hug, you're so brave.
I 'm Canadian & well some people think we are a liberal country we have a diversity of attitudes towards LGBT, it is not universally accepted. I suspect the same for the military. Laws & rights always look good on paper but the changing of minds is generational. Don't be downhearted, you are part of a global family, you will always find love & support. It must still feel like you are alone at times but you are not. I use Twitter, but until you know how to protect your privacy be careful.
I can't help but laugh at some comments that are made by some straight and (seemingly) homophobic service members like the guy in your class when speaking in regards to the DADT policy and it's future repeal. NOTHING will change for those who are straight unless they allow it to! My husband and I have debated over the DADT policy and it's repeal many of times and I fail to see that side of his argument. There are far more gay's and lesbian's in the military than we are aware of and showering, a
BIG THANKS (again) for your service to our Country. Thanks also for asking me to be a friend. I sincerely hope DADT is completely repealed very soon, and you will be free to live openly and honestly. I wish you PEACE.
@rwrawle ...not yet...I want to do it in person...I have not seen anyone in my family in over a year, and I want to have one good visit before I break the news
@AreYouSuprised - I wish you the best when the time comes for the "talk" with your family. Also, as a vet myself from the days when that perfidious DADT policy was first adopted I hope you will be free to be yourself without NCIS or CID or whatever breathing down your neck.
@AreYouSuprised I don't know your family details, but sometimes telling family long-distance gives them the time to think and realize how important you are in their life. It can definitely backfire, but it worked wonderfully for me. You've had years to process this, some extra time might help them.
I want to say thanks for posting these videos, I'm sure that they will help others in your situation, but most of all I want to thank you for serving. I don't now how many people thank you for your service in the comments(I skimmed some and didn't see any) so I thought I would try to fill that gap.
I'll be sure to watch any videos you post in the future. Stay safe! =D
Thank you for telling about your experiences with DADT training. Your vlogs are wonderful. Keep 'em coming! I hope you get to leave the sand box soon and hit some cooler temps. Take good care, sweetie. Hugs and love to you! ~Tracey
i think the dont ask dont tell will be a lil different in the army....from your uniform you look like air-force... i mean there is still a major gender bias in the army...and its no better when it comes to the topic of gays in the military..ignorance galore in the army lol
Your videos are not boring, I like them. Keep it up and remember we all support you even if we don't really know you in person. Greetings from Mexico.
Sorry, I was going to say is that all the military training that you guys are going to receive on the matter? Like how long is the training suppose to take and since they don't know when the plan will be fully integrated why start the training so early? It has to be soon at least, don't you think? Sorry for all the questions thanks for the video! Good luck on your continued journey. You are awesome
Nice tot see you again and hear your thoughts! I support U! Proud of U as well! Please try you use twitter also!It is very easy, cause even i can do it!!:) lol

It would seem, at least from your perspective, that the reaction to the repeal of DADT is rather good. I only hope that it's as good throughout the military. It certainly isn't at all what some people predicted it would be. You are in the middle of one of the biggest changes in our country's recent history. The next thing would be to repeal that waste of paper DOMA.
I personally can see how difficult all this is for you...but are you just making these videos to get attention or something??? When u first started u talked about ur experiences and coming out...now ur just rambling about the dadt reapeal. Personally i wanna know how this whole thing is making u feel? How about ur family? ur "girlfriend"? do u have any intentions of deciding who u might want to tell first?....trying to stay interested....
@basilboyblue ....thanks for keeping me on track....I came out to my first (not gay) person in the military last week....my next video will be about that
@AreYouSuprised Although I do want to know about your own personal feelings and how you are dealing with everything. I still want to know about DADT because, unlike you and those in the military who know what is happening, un civilians have no idea how it is being dealt with. I have a bi friend in the Navy and I am concerned for him as well, but he hasn't shared anything with me about what he is dealing with.
@AreYouSuprised This should be interesting! I hope everything worked out well, and I do hope you answer some of my questions I left on all the past vids. Thanx again for what you are doing, its very brave of you!
@basilboyblue and you also have to understand that its a process, you really didnt expect him to just come out of the closet all at one to everyone to see that happens did you. This is following his complete journey and I personally find it very interesting and am very interested to hear what happens next!
do you think that there will still be some "FAG BETTERS" as they call them down here in the millitary and is the offcers going to inforce any punshments given
It's funny, America was suppose to be the land of the free...unless you are not gay. I find that very funny that you have to be in the closet when you are in the milatary. Why fight for their freedom when gay people don't have the same freedom as the rest of America.
My question is will you come out when that policy comes out.? It seems like you are having mixed feelings about this. Make sure that your decision is the right one and live life with no regrets.
not boring at all, quite interesting how they go about it: not pressuring into it, but by stating that LGB's will openly serve in the future and by means of these trainings: getting everyone involved, get them to really think about it, even vent their thoughts and frustrations..
that's the best way to implement durable change, and maybe even the fastest way
don't know since when gays can openly serve in our military - they certainly can now (maybe I'll look into it)
@AreYouSuprised I do know that, I know my bits and pieces about american issues.. but I was struck by wondering how people dealed with gays in the military over here in Belgium and broader in Europe, in the past and right now.. I'll see what I can find out
Thanks for posting this. It is good to hear from the ranks.
In response to the "why repeal it" consider this: When a gay soldier was killed at Camp Pendleton, his partner could not be notified under current policy. The partner had to learn about it on the evening news.
DADT will probably be reinstated if we get a Republican majority or Republican president in the next election.
DADT isn't about ending discrimination. Marriage isn't recognized and other rights are still being keep for straight service members. the repeal of DADT allows service members to say "Hey I'm gay/bisexual." and not be removed from the military ... that's it. Everything else we still have to fight for... :[
Hmm did they say discriminate??? thats so funny that they understand that they have been discriminating...I was in the Army b4 DADT. I plan on going into the National Guards in june...Keep making these videos they are important. Laws do change but when it comes to civil rights we dont go backwords...
That was interesting - Theres almost no chance of DADT being re -introduce since 21 of 22 NATO countries now have an open police - the exception is Turkey which is reviewing the situation - your already doing your bit for your country you have earned the right to bag some "me time" - enjoy yourself : )
You know that when DADT was created they briefed us about the same thing, but and I say but the comments that came from the people weren't very nice at times, I'm glad that changed to a point to the better...
thank you for letting us go through this journey with you! keep making vids, btw how are you coming along with the idea of coming out when you go back home?
Guys like you motivate me! You really are an inspiration to a lot of people in your own little way. Know that. I'm proud that you're sharing with the world. It helps a lot.
glad to see you again. In regards to the topic, it was a good response as to why repeal it. The person who asked what the point in repealing it is clearly doesnt know the effects. I for one hope they never bring back dadt after its gone. Its a pointless law that just descriminates. Hope to see you again soon ^^ take care!
Some things that will hopefully make some strides against homophobia in this country will be serving openly, and the effort to get male sport stars to do anti gay bashing campaigns.
@specialwidescreen ...reply to "what do you eat?"....I have made up my mind to not eat brown food...I know it is stupid, but it is an easy rule to live by...can you think of any brown food that is good for you?
I'll be so glad when the impliment that. No one should have to hide who they are just to serve their country. I'm so proud of all that you do for us. Stay sweet <3
It's kinda funny 'cause im only 13 , and I watched all your videos and subscribed. You're really inspirational , so thanks . :)

Hang in there. I'm sorry that you are discouraged by the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" training. Just know that your gay community is rooting for you. And I am rooting for you. You are a brave soldier.

Thanks for showing how it is from the inside, I wasn't sure how they were handling that but now I have somewhat of an idea.
LazyTallGuy 6 months ago
Thank you so much for giving up a summary of your DADT briefing. For a non-military person like myself who is gay and is invested in this topic, it's very refreshing and interesting to see the affect of the repeal on the "ground level" so to speak. Because even though there is the outlying statement of equal rights for the LGBT community with the repeal, in the end it's soldiers like you that it's really all about. God Bless you and thank you. :)
PersistentBacon 6 months ago 2
Important clarification: You CAN be persecuted for being gay outside the military. Much of the country does not consider "sexual orientation" to be a protected class (like race, age, gender, etc). So, when you re-enter civilian life, keep an eye on the protections offered by your particular employer, city or state.
With that said, I'm not trying to minimize the extent the difficulties of being gay and in the military. Just trying to give you a heads-up.

thanks for the video! you're great! tell me, i'm wondering, what's the actual atmosphere in your unit regarding the discussion of personal relationships? is the whole discourse of whose-girlfriend-does-what and who-f*s-whom among servicemen that proliferated? and is it conceivable to be silent/neutral when such talks do occur or would it be considered an automatic coming out? thanks for the answer!

I think that you are amazing, for having a voice, a direct voice. I support you, and I hope that everything goes as you expect.
Do you feel like DADTs repeal will be enforced during your time in service? Would you want it to or would you rather wait to finish your term?

I'd first like to say that it's really cool u made this video, people always seem to toss out their opinions on DADT, but none of them are in the military. I had to go thru the same training myself, surprisingly (or not) the comment I heard most from my buddies in my unit was "let's get married and claim eachother as dependents so we can get more money" It was funny and we all laughed... I digress, my question: after they repeal DADT are u going to stay in as an openly gay servicemember?

@grammaton6leric I am not sure if I am going to stay in, I don't thing the repeal was a really swayed me either way

@AreYouSuprised I don't know your family details, but sometimes telling family long-distance gives them the time to think and realize how important you are in their life. It can definitely backfire, but it worked wonderfully for me. You've had years to process this, some extra time might help them.

Make sure that your decision is the right one and live life with no regrets.

good to see you again!
not boring at all, quite interesting how they go about it: not pressuring into it, but by stating that LGB's will openly serve in the future and by means of these trainings: getting everyone involved, get them to really think about it, even vent their thoughts and frustrations..
that's the best way to implement durable change, and maybe even the fastest way
don't know since when gays can openly serve in our military - they certainly can now (maybe I'll look into it)

Duo1 9 months ago
Hmm did they say discriminate??? thats so funny that they understand that they have been discriminating...I was in the Army b4 DADT.
