Serotonin has little or nothing to do with mood and/or anxiety. This is a common mis belief brought on by the effectiveness of SSRI`s but its proven to be wrong a number of times.
The way exercise (and SSRI`s) work is because it increases BDNF, which in its turn promotes the formation of new brain cells and receptors. More serotonin/dopamine/gaba/norephedrine receptors means more sensitivity to these neurotransmitters which could lead to a great improvement in mood.
