Im still waiting for someone to top Rick James and any of the Old School rappers, Too Short, Grandmaster Flash, Curtis Blow, Mc (Over weight Lover) Heavy D, Eazy E, Tupac, BIGGIE small, E.P.M.D, Sir Mix Alot, confunksion, Barkays, Whodini, Thats enough you get the point and NO Lady Caca and LiL (Dumb Ass) Wayne cant touch any of the Old Schoolers! !
RICK JAMES WAS THE SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT
not born in this area but my elders were and i let the funk live on cuz theres nothing like being young and hearing a good rick james song or maybe some AWB or a little stone city band on a hot day in cali
I know Rick had demons, but what a musician, artist, and producer! Prince did copy the blueprint. But hey, the so-called artists these days do the same damn thing! I know real music, and Rick never let me down!
Rick James will blow Neyo like Yayo! Rick and that NEO guy shouldn't be used in the same sentence, Slick Rick will roll him up like a dollar bill! Rick the King of Punk FUNK-Super Freak-GIve it to me baby-this song playing no comparison to that pop other guy.
This dude was the coldest singer/producer in the late 70's/80's...underrated. If Rick James was in his prime, he would be LARGE!! I hold his body of work, what he wrote for Motown, produced and straight crooning skills against ANYONE from today. Some idiot said Ne-Yo was better than Rick. My response than that is let Ne-Yo leave his pregnant girl in the room with Rick and then leave and watch what happens when he comes back.
Ain't that a bitch....I didn't even know "Im Rick James Bitch" was a cousin of mine even thought it was by marriage he still was family until after he died....dammmm
@ havocHWC3...I'm not knockin' anyone or where they heard this...an if you think I came here (whatever that means) because of Vice City then you definately got me confused with someone else. I was bumpin' this jam when Pac Man was the business...lol
@crad805oldschool AMEN BRADDAH!!!! I used to crank this kut and singin it when everyone and the radio was playin Superfreak and Give it to me....This was by far the best track off street songs
This is the kind of music I listened growing up, but don't knock anyone you came here because of "Vice City". As far as I'm concerned, they did Rick James a favor and spread his music around to a younger generation. And if they like the song, isn't that the point? Who cares how they first heard of this song?
@vavazelus- Rick James wouldve been digging ya mother out while he had you burning your fingers just to keep his pipe lit. Now that shit is gangsta. And he wouldve had one of those red heels all up in your asscrack.
Crying shame that his Dave Chappel skits and criminal past overshadow what a tremendous talent Rick was, I put him right up there with Prince in terms of sheer ability and creativity.
@MrShakbo I loved rick james' music before dave chappelle but at the same time I love Rick James even more because of "Fuck yo couch nigga!", but its just a joke, and its based on stories of when Rick James was extremely high. If you listen to RJ sober, you'll clearly realize what kind of musical genius he was and especially how intellectual he was.
@MrShakbo Prince?? No Way! ! Slick Rick puts even that lil shorty away! ! Take another look because i cant compare Slick Rick to anybody he was just way to Bad Ass! !
@Joyciesayshi no you weren't, all this music is already there, this song predates my birth by 3 years, doesn't mean i cant enjoy it. that the lovely thing about our generation, we actually can hear any of this music whenever we want. and any other music we might want to hear. on demand, immediately, no rewinding, no fast forwarding. recognize that feeling, because our children will be able to do the same thing with music, AND with video.
This was my most favrite song by Rick James! "Standing on the top" and "Mary Jane" was other favorite! He was a talented singer and song writer, along with a producer! So sad that he is gone, what great music by Rick James!
micheal was before his time , if you are ever followed by some snow bunnys and want them to beat it . Just say stop following me presley my name isnt micheal jackson . a big up is look up granny porn . i see more white granny's then black . things that make u go hmmmm.. think about it b4 you lie on a race yd
I love this song too!!! Oh boy... what am I going to do??? I wonder why all the amazing musicians die before their time... Rick James made great music!
I never used to listen to Rick James.... now I love his music.. how funny is that?! My favorite is, "Give It To Me"... I was listening to it ALL day today!! LOL
I grew up on rick james, it's a damn shame most folks that comment on here only know him from a damn Chappel sketch..Listen to his damn music mafucka's.
@b80379038 I really mean no personal offense but from a True Funk Soldier's stand point, you need the shit SLAPPED out of you for even mentioning Charlie Sheen in the same sentence with Rick James!
@MrJersey219 r u fucking kidding me i live right outside of buff its one of the most getto cityes in the US hands down and worst economy gotta love buffalo
this a ill ass song when this song was out i was a youngsta but he was talking about a group a niggas im not goin to say there name but DETROIT was it
hey funkydick or whatever ur name is , listen lil rican boy im gunna rep buffalo ny all day if u dont like it get off ur couch and stop eatin ur rice and beans for a min get off my and ricks DEEEEEK u slob!
Slick Rick at his best, it sho brings back good memories. To me this was slick rick's best album, and don't get me wrong, all the hits he made was the joints, but this one, was straight chill, wit a gangsta groove. Oh Yeah! check da lyrics, when slick says, "one thing about the ghetto, you don't have to hurry, it'll be there tomorrow, so brotha don't you worry", thats real talk.
May God rest the soul of Brotha James Ambrose Johnson.
Talking about Funky!!! Love the real deep voice within the song.......I heard that voice on "Give it to me" also......Can anyone tell me if that sound is due to an individual or electronics?
I saw Rick live 3 times..Small venue the first time at Newark Symphony Hall in Newark NJ ( 1979 6th row center!!!) , then a Budweiser fest at Giant's Stadium (1981) and Madison Sq Garden..Damn he was fantastic..I believe that on the back of the album cover there is graffiti that says " Rick loves Mary Jane"...that is my name ....he was singing to meeeeeeee!!!
Nothing like Old School Funk! Rick, James Brown, EWF,Ohio Players, Parliment, The Stax session musicians ect. laid the foundation for the new generation of playa's. The new cats are cool, but nothing like the godfathers of soul. The other day I saw a show about the session musicians who played on all the Stax sessions. Theyr'e like 70 or 80 years old and still funky as hell. Theyr'e grooves and vamps can wake the dead. They ooze heart and soul. No $20,000 sampling machine can touch them.
lol i was 3 when this came out, my mom was18, we would dance all night to this album lol, the benifit of having a teenage parent (who didnt give me away) ;)
This man made some damn good music!!! R.I.P. you BAD MUTHAFUCKA!!

That's an amazing song! You see yourself in a corvette in the 80's with this song, having fun at parties...
It makes me feel good all the time!
