  • Jake, I just got the book "Worms Eat My Garbage" for a Father's Day present. haha. I need to check but I thought that red wigglers were not soil dwellers but compost and manure pile dwellers.

  • @sandworm3 hey there..cheers to the sun..and the worm! Yah..they are composters and need food constantly. I should have better articulated my method on this. You see all the straw around my trees and gardens...well those are all compost piles. My scraps from the kitchen all get randomly tossed under every straw pile. I also chop and drop green leaf material constantly on top of the straw...from surrounding plants.

  • @sandworm3 it seems to be working..as I'm still seeing red wiggler activity. Have you seen the video titled "Vermicomposting Trench" by the user TheCompostGuy?? Very cool stuff...the method I'm using works great too... Sounds like a fantastic book...need to get my hands on a copy for sure!! Let me know if you find out any cool worm stuff...peace brutha

  • @rawutah Funny, when I first got into worm composting, I tried asking some cattlemen around here if they had seen any of those in their manure piles that I could have. All I got was strange looks. Another farmer got paranoid that I was bringing in an unauthorized exotic specie. Seems like if it isn't "roundup ready" or GMO they don't want any part of this.

  • Do you moisten the top of the ground before you put the worms on top of your gardens...Very interesting...ty for sharing :)) alli :)

  • @Mrlandroverful Hi Alli! Thank You!! It was fairly moist already, so I didn't moisten it before... however....after I filmed this, I did moisten the straw with a good spraying. The soil stays good and moist day to day..from the drips hitting the straw... gotta love straw mulch!! Something else I forgot to mention in the video, was that all these new beds have cardboard on the bottom, so there's nice moist food waiting down there for them, should they head that way immediately! :)

  • @rawutah Ty for your tips, when i get a garden up i will certainly look into doing some worms for my garden :))

  • That,s a lot of worms! i found a lot today in the garden close to the leaves I burried. they seemed to like those.

  • @jihadacadien haha...man I love worms! Spring must be getting close for you UP there in the frozen lands...of CANADA...haha....your just a polar ice gardener in my book...whom I respect for doing so...!! Looking forward to the updates bro..those little greenhouses are cool!!

  • @rawutah Oh spring is definitely here!!! I spent all day in the garden preparing stuff!!!

  • Wow, that is a lot of worms. Think we will try and do one of these worm farms this year for their castings etc. We have an old plastic bin that think would be ideal. We're just digging over our garden for spring planting. I notice you put straw around the base of your trees - we generally clear a metre circle around them and I'll add a layer of compost soon to give them some nutrients. Your garden is looking great!

  • @ivankinsman Thanks...great to hear from you..and to hear the spring planting has begun!! Can't wait to see that beautiful garden again...those nasturtiums...we're beautiful...I"m a BIG fan of those! I'm with you on the compost...around the trees...they love it. I just scoot aside the straw and add more.. I need my own animals though...like you have...to add their waste to my compost..it's a missing element in my little backyard farm!!

  • @ivankinsman you're going to love worm farming my friend.....!!!

  • I noticed three different types of worms in my beds. Wigglers, regular earthworms and nightcrawlers. I feel like such a murderer when I dig the garden because there just so freakin many worms that I'm always cutting up a few everytime I push the shovel in. Poor things. :(

ps: I like the wiggler planting idea. They mate and reproduce like wildfire!

  • @Praxxus55712 hello my friend....I know what you mean...it's like many a voice crying out.... all at once...yah I love Star Wars!! Loving your vids too.. bro...can't get those turkeys our of my mind...such gorgeous creatures!!! All hail the worm...and the many variations thereof.....haha...i might need some turkeys soon...to squash the burgeoning worm population!!

  • Excellent! I've learned something today. I'm going to have to go back and take a closer look at this worm rearing business. This makes perfect sense for raised beds. Another project...woohoo!

    Best Wishes, Brendan

  • @baconsoda best wishes to you too Brendan....yah these little guys are PURE GOLD! Hope all is well my friend...and that Spring has found your shores!! It's going to be a good one!

  • oooooo o_o

  • @Necrowitch its pure worm JOY!! Hi Necrowitch!!! Maybe these little guys could heal the "crack" down there in Texas...hahaha...hope I'm remembering that right...cracks in Texas....? Happy Spring my friend..cheers to the worms! Between them and FUNGI...they just might save us ALL!!

  • @rawutah hehehe! that and rock dust! =D yes you remembered right. I'm a bit more worried about flooding at this very moment.

  • thanks for sharing. This was very informative.

  • @emt845 thank you...have fun tending to your herds!
