This is MCC's most powerful album. It's full of rich, powerful observations and statements about the nature of love that embraces romance, yet goes beyond it:) --
@ tregibbs-Hehe we're obviously a rare breed, or just discerning! Simple & Brilliant is a great way of describing it, not much more than her great voice and a guitar , yet the whole song is greater than the sum of its parts, I love how the story unfolds and draws the listener in, inviting you to take the journey, down the dreaming road, "I wasn't odd or strange, just quietly rearranged" what a fantastic lyric that is, so simple, yet so profound in the thoughts it provokes, I never tire of it :)
This woman is AMAZING. I went on a road trip in June to see her in Arvada, CO, and played her CDs all the way. This was the first time I've seen her in concert, and now I can die happy. She did not sing "Come On Come On," but sang so many of my favorites. I've been hooked on MCC since "The Opening Act" and "The More Things Change." She played some new songs - so new they are not even on her latest, "The Age of Miracles" and they were great, so we can look forward to her next CD. LOVE HER.
Her voice makes me melt..so love her and have done so for 20+ years now...more so actually...A beautiful soul inside and out~~seen her in concert umpteen times and will again in a couple of weeks..can't wait!! I need my Chapin fix!!!
I was floored years ago by her lyrics. As in Sometimes you're the windshield. Sometimes you're the bug . I can certainly relate to that. I didn't keep up with her work after that. I accidentally stumbled upon this song and the "photograph" lyric really hit home. I'll be listening to more of her music now!
I'm 55 years old and a retired naval officer. About ten years ago, my service duty required that I drive cross country from DC to San Diego alone. I had two CDs I could listen to; "Come On, Come On" and "Time, Sex, Love." I didn't mind one little bit!!
the black night was split wide open when she said come on come on just step on through I understand you don't feel ready just take my hand I'll hold you steady the light was pouring through and I didn't know what to do she said come come on don't you believe in love come come on we'll just rise above she showed me her wings I heard how an angel sings she said come on come you can fly home with me come on come on there's lots more to see so I took her hand and the split was closed at her command
"Its a need you never get used to. So fierce and so confused. Its that loss you never get over the first time you lose." How many of us have felt this way but couldnt put our feelings into such eloquent words. She is the most gifted lyricist I have ever heard.
Wonderful song at a terrific venue. She is so emotive when she sings terrific songs like this. The lyrics are so moving and reflective of my own youth. She will always be one of my favorite artists ever. She's been there and understands.
@ Sarakimble, Goosebumps seem to be a recurring them where MCC is concerned, other artists move me from time to time, or give me reason to think now and again, but no-one does as much as MCC, or in so many different ways, she can invoke every emotion imaginable with that beautiful voice and her way with words, often saying so easily what our thoughts are, her honesty and open approach is more than just natural, it's haunting and it's admirable, and the goosebumps are testament to it's sincerity.
@ Lydee09 "it like pulls back the cover of my heart and engages it in the story of the song." that's an absolutely perfect way to describe the effects of the dreaming road :) you just described how i feel when i listen to it, it's one of very few songs i can immerse myself in, it eases you into it gently, rocks you softly, and just encourages you to close your eyes, lose yourself, drift away and imagine, and feel. It's almost like a journey.
I've got goose bumps all over my body. She is so powerful, in her lyrics and in her music. Notice how the whole place is absolutely silent, completely hypnotized by her and her guitar. Now- thats talent!
Now there is a voice I have'nt heard in a while, more fool me always enjoyed her maybe itsbecause she hasn't been to Dublin Ireland for a while. Thanks for the post
I find it hard to believe that there are two people who did not like this video. MCC is a songwriter for the ages. Her body of work is simultaneously contemporary and timeless.
Oh what a wonderful song. So much feeling. So much just awesome feeling. Thank you for sharing. It's like just so soothing...makes bad things go away...makes me want to sleep soundly. Again, thank you.
Undoubtedly one of all time geatest lyricists, who has blossomed into one of the most talented and honest of performers. My life has been richer ever since I first heard her voice, MCC has penned/song many great songs its hard to pick a single favourite, but "The Dreaming Road" is hard to beat. A little solitude and a few MCC songs is a real pleasure.
@SharedExperience I agree, if I had to choose I would say the dreaming road is my favorite. I can't stop playing it, I absolutely love the opening guitar, it like pulls back the cover of my heart and engages it in the story of the song. Sha is so talented. I am so grateful that she has recovered. I have missed her so.
@SharedExperience - omg - you are the FIRST person I have ever met who feels the same way about "The Dreaming Road" as I do. It is one of the most beautifully written, powerful, romantic, hopeful songs I've ever heard. Simple and brilliant.... perfectly describes how love is rarely linear
I loved this song when it first came out and had forgotten all about it. BEAUTIFUL lyrics! I Am a Town and Rhythm of the Blues also wonderful. Thanks for posting!
I love this song. It blows my mind. Pure musical genius who doesn't get the credit she deserves. Sad really. This song is a representation of one of her better pieces of work...
You want total movement? Listen to her driving down a country road at night, windows down....she is the most moving singer/songwriter I have and will ever hear in my life. I saw her 13 years ago before I truly understood how much her songs would get me through the toughest times in my life. MCC is therapy for the soul. There is a song that describes EVERY emotion.
I have seen many other comments like this, but Mary Chapin sings the songs of my life. I believe it is because we grew up in the same era. This song always gives me chills. I am proud to say I have all her CD's, and I hope she doesn't wait so long before releasing her next.
So very heart-felt! Such nice lyrics! The line about "It's a photograph taken in Paris, at the end of the honeymoon, in 1948, made in the month of June" It's great, great poetry!
I could listen to this, on repeat, non-stop, for days on end. This song is...breathtaking. And awe inspiring. And displays her writing capabilities so well. She is awesome. I love MCC and desperately want her to go on tour.
I was at this show. She times everything perfectly. You could have heard a pin drop. I miss her not touring recently, but hopefully she is better and will get out soon.
"Now you're older than they were then that summer night." Has there ever been a more powerful line written? I remember always thinking my parents were ancient. Then I saw a photograph of them and realized I was older than they were in that photo. Powerful song.
That's the line that grabbed me too...when you're a kid, the parents were ancient no matter how young they may have been at the time. Mine are gone now and I love and appreciate the old photographs and home movies more than I ever did when I was young and clueless.
@robrossi22 .A common realization we all have. But Mary put it to music thats the difference. I supose thats the magic of lyrics, but it has to have a beautiful song as well, and this is.
it's too slow, but in the pocket. she's a great talent. this song on a fabulous club stereo got me going on her, and when she's on she really gets it. the album cut is simply exsquisite
If she had done this any slower, it would've just stopped. Other than that, it's a gorgeous rendition (without a lot of yelling and screaming in the background).
Incidentally, from at least the equal of the best engineered album ever. What a joy to listen to through a good stereo system.
