  • Thanks for this video man, it took me forever to find someone who had some kind of actually advice on vocal stacking.

  • wow. u need lotion on those elbows

  • hey man you are the best....can u tell me which program is the best for vocal recordings for mac?

  • a lot of eminem's choruses are have stacked vocals, but they sound really good though.

  • this is why i started hating lloyd banks music.

  • Thanks, That was great Advice man

  • Use Vocalign

  • stacking is also used to give ur vocal a different effect

like make ur voice sound different more harsh or more thick

there r plenty of signed mcz who stack there vocals and it sounds perfect

  • Stacking Vocals is key in recording. I kno I can do it everytime I Get in the both. But its all on the person doing the recording too. If They only like to do Dubs an adlibs than thats thier style and thats how they do it. but for guys like me I have to stack them in Half bar patterens. Thats just the way that I do it. But in my opion stacking is one of the key ingredents toi a good mix on a hip hop song

  • In my opinion you can pretty much "stack" your vocals as long as you dont have the same volume levels... same with just copying and pasting... The only reason why I think stacking your vocals is whack is because its not your voice its different because its dubbed and possible different as apposed to you just copying and pasting.

  • @803mltg thanks man i guess money cant buy you that

  • checkout my vid

  • stack them and just put the second vocal into a low volume...

  • 2pac stacked vocals

  • Dont stack your vocals people just copy and paste the first verse u did thats all u gotta do thats what i do i use to stack my vocals but found it its much clearer and better quality when u copy and paste just drop the volume down on the second verse and just adlib words u went down on n what not

  • @VersusTheBeat all that does is make it louder not doubled

  • yes record the verse 1 time, thereafter, if you want to stack...drop in and out / you might Q&A your verse with ad libs. Just have fun and be creative.

  • it was dust, which came into the light @ 1:47

  • i clicked on this because the thumbnail looked like Jay-Z... lmao damn

  • @TheJaGGSTR same lmao

  • If your a nujabes fan google Requiem de Nujabes it's a great tribute

  • aww man,I thought this was Jay-Z...........-_-

  • I tried stacking vocals, and it came out pretty good, but on some of my songs I messed up because I couldn't get the same exact rhythm.

  • is stacking vocals the same adlibs??

  • @BlackDiamondmuzic adlibs is just repating the odd words, usually the ones at the ones that rhyme. you are technically stacking but thats a more precise type hence why it has it own name "adlib". stacking is repeating and re recording the whole verse

  • SO TRUE

  • i stack my vocals all the time but how do you equalize it in the mix thats what i wanna no cause that is bothering me and i'll never find out.

  • Anyone else notice the orb appear above his left shoulder at 1:47?

  • ya i seen that orb too

  • the key here is not to avoid stacking vocals, but rather to stack them well - stacking vocals produces a nice effect that you cannot get with programming...also having a good mic is important - i hope that shiny gold mic is not the sound that i hear on this video...lol

  • I love that mic

  • This dude reminds me of Jay-Z lol

  • or....

    ...you can use Vocalign

  • please can somebody help me out here?? say you record a verse and you're happy with it but you want the verse to be stacked. couldnt you just copy the first one and stack that instead of recording the whole verse. again. because if you use the same recording twice it wont be jumbled if you line it up right???

  • is it just me or do u think a producer should have a higher quality audio file with his tutorial video?.. also you have no idea what ure talking about and u are saying the same thing over and over.

  • record the bit of whatever youre tryna put in and the repeat it...lol

  • I hate the "Fix it in the mix" mentality. Why not get it right the first time?

  • im a producer and engineer and its really nothing wrong wit stacking or doubling vocals as long as the artist writes and remember his verse so every word will be on point .and also the engineer has to put a good mix on those doubles so it will sound crisp. so basically if u have a engineer with a good ear mixing your music everything should be cool

  • Actually they call it dubing and it makes it sound much better

  • yu could bruh i needs 2 get at yu personally

  • lol copy and paste

  • @xBLAKxV3N0Mx I been doing doubles/adlibs for years so im good at matching my tempo and pitch of my voice so it doesnt sound all off balance.

  • Great points … I recorded a group called 'Jade' some time ago and these girls were so tight we could have 36 vocals (overdub harmonies) deep and it sounded amazing. But you have to have the skills. We've got some great tips on how to get a great vocal sound even with an inexpensive mic ... check out our channel ... SecretPros.

Also check out Ready Acoustics ... GREAT room treatment for cheap!

  • he said "stacking vocals" 17 times.

  • as far as microphones.. they have a good one at best buy thats like 125$ otherwise im sure you could find a good deal on a microphone on ebay 123 pills

  • hey bro...can you help me out find the best home recording software....pplllzzz...

  • doesnt, thats my point its a practice and being a musician thing keylowick

  • i know a great way to stack vocals... copy paste!

  • @cod4door that's what i usually do too

  • Just side chain a gate off the better take and it'll tidy it right up. DONE

  • dude im a white kid from vermont and i can make it sound good stacked any day of the week, and im not slug from atmosphere by any means lol

  • @hholland93 why does it matter if you're white?

  • Surely you could just double the first vocal track

  • hey, can give me some hints, i need some help with recording techiques, i want to record clearly but dont know how?

  • Stacking? It's correctly called "double tracking" and is used in almost every genre. Regarding repeating it exactly...WRONG! The whole idea is to get subtle variations in the 2 or even 3 takes or surely you would simply copy and paste the original take 2 or 3 times?? Well, you wouldn't do that due to phase cancellation as 1 important reason. Copy and paste can be used though with a plug-in that introduces those variations artificially for you. In conclusion, I'm not flaming - just correcting.

  • a lot of yall aint doin what he doin. he giving real information, and all that information is supposed to do is give you better ideas, help you to find out what works best for you. who really know not to "stack " your verses, before you heard somebody say ya music sound bad? and im talkin somebody on hot 97! Stackin might be better for you and all that ( or so you think), but just to understand the word take you to a whole other level. good lookin, expert village, appreciatin the info!!!!!!!!!!!

  • sorry guy in vid. iam gon have to disagree wit u on dat one of the best things you could do to ur rap vocals is stack em.. it gives it a better sound. it gives it strengh.. and if it is a lil bit off wit the first one u recorded then even better.. but just a bit not a whole lot though.. and then again sometimes it is best to just do one track and some adlibs but it all dependz on the person ur recording n not only cuz of the sound of their voice but also the way they rap

  • eey guy please check this song : /watch?v=kjo5Gb9MA2Q please ! and send this song all your Friends

  • How to get a full sound vocal without stacking?

  • i call that being dubbed...

  • I think he means the rhythm of the vox flow becomes interrupted when 'stacked'.

  • WHATS THE DIFFERENCE OF RECORDING TWICE AND COPY AND PASTING THE SAME FIRST TAKE

  • Comment removed

  • @HOOJUANIT the difference is when you record twice your voice is never the same so it gives you more of a live feel..If you just paste the vocals it just makes them loud as fuck cause the voice is exactly the same.

  • @suicidaljay it only will be louder if you just stack em. i found the best case scenario is when you copy the vocal line make another track and put it right underneath the first one, then zoom in and drag the copied track a little to the right and i mean the tiniest bit. and it sounds fatty

  • lol you guys arguing over this shit are funny. It's all subjective art technique, you can get great results any path you walk down, but what matters is that you gotta keep your feet right!

  • Layering Vocals sounds like Shit. Mainly because of the artist. Just like he's saying.

  • I stack my vocals since the day i began writing music and the reason why i did was because i bealived it would give my vocals sound more profecional shit the bettles recorded a hole album using mono style recording and lil wayne records in hotels

  • @bigdeeyuca And the Beatles.

  • Wouldn't this be the same thing as overdubbing?

  • What mic is he using?

  • should i record in mono or stereo?

    im confused with that

  • @ryanj456 mono mix my dude

  • @ryanj456 record in mono.Always in mono.One

  • That studio is haunted as fuck.

  • eminem stacks his vocals ( in the way i am its very clare) and his songs sound perfect to me..

  • @SpazmaticAttack VOCALIGN SOFTWARE PROBLEM SOLVED INVEST PEOPLE INVEST.

  • do it you own way.

  • @KasperMedC no homie do it the right way.

  • im a rapper and i know how to record a verse . what you need to do is recording 3 times

    1 : normal vocals ( the first voice )

2: you need do record a second voice . second voice is important it gives the song a better taste and u get a chorus effect .

3: u need to record double voice . just the last 2 or 3 words of the sense

then u have to mix it sure . you can use mixcraft for editing its very easy program to use

and im ready for any questions ^^

  • @IQThuGz OK FAM I USUALLY STACK MY VOCS IN THE SENSE THAT EXPERT VILLAGE IS TALKING ABOUT BUT THEN I LAY MY ADLIBS DOWN WHICH IS USUALLY THE LAST 2 OR 3 WORDS AS U SAY SO JUST MAKE THINGS CLEAR IS THAT WHAT U ARE SAYING?

  • @flous1 Brotha i will explain it to you

first u have to record the frist vocal right ?

then you have to record another one but in this one you have to record just the last 2 or 3 words of the sense

    For example

    you record this sense first

I know this crack fiend Maxine who needs a vaccine

She tests positive but tells you that her act's clean

and in the second one u record ( who needs a vaccine ) and ( her act's clean )

but you must practice a lot because you have to do it in the right time

  • @IQThuGz i got u fam good lookin...

  • Comment removed

  • @briencrawford it takes one set of vocals from this (...) and makes it this (..............)

in easy terms to expalin it . you tell me

  • if you make your artist record all over to stack...your an idiot and a bad producer. All you have to do is double the vocals in the mixer...either on the software or the hardware mixer...

  • expert village dumb a hell

  • So then, what's the difference between "stacking" and "over dubbing (e.g. doubling vox tracks)?

  • is Acid pro a good software to use and how would i get that warm sound i have an akg microphone

  • @EliAkAYuNgE PRO TOOLS HOMIE THATS THE BEST YOU CAN USE YES DIFFICULT BUT WORTH IT WARM SOUND IS NOT ABOUT THE MICROPHONE I HAVE THE neumann tlm 49 AND THATS NOT EVEN A WARM MIC JUST VERY PRECISE. THATS WHAT PRE AMPS AND OTHER EQUIPMENT IS FOR UNLESS YOU HAVE PLUG INS FOR THAT WHICH IS POSSIBLE TO BE DONE I DO IT TO BUT HARDWARE OVERCOMES SOFTWARE ANYDAY.

  • i used the first words he said in my Knife Party EP, just thaught i'd let you know expert village, cheers

  • if you stack and eq the second track so there's no frequency clash it won't sound that bad

  • i didnt think this was recording a crap song

  • Stacking vocals do NOT sound like they have reverb on - they sound like they have chorus on, and thats the point of doing it.

However, it is correct that the rapper or singer has to be able to track (or stack) very accurately for it be both effective and musically useful.

Another way of using a single vocal and making it sound like its been tracked, is to copy the first vocal on to another track and shift it by around 6 to 10 ms forward in the track and panning slightly.

    This really works.

  • bad tip, stacking makes it sound more professional. but like you said if you arent that good you shouldnt do it.. I first learned how to stack or layer vocals from listening to R Kelly and noticed he puts his in Stereo Channel a lot for club songs, now i am a pro

  • THANX FOR THE ADVICE FAM'

@tinster666- Thanx for the advice on the delay

    -LAW-

  • you can line stacks up!

  • 2 minutes 37 seconds...

you could of just said..."Don't stack your vocals, it'll sound jumbled."

BAM! 3 seconds and you won't take people's time...I'm fast huh?

  • @ogtgp

  • Jdeleon and Tyse know what they're talking about!!!!!

  • Please dont duplicate the track and try to delay it! It sounds horrible unless you're trying to get some wierd effect....I've done it, tried it and the best way is to have them stack and use your volume to clean it up and not make it sound like 2 or 4 vox. Tinster sounds like a novist!!! No harm intended!!

  • @LintoneMuzick THANK YOUU

  • i wanted to know, in the studio, do you have to raise your voice while rapping? sometimes i make that mistake cuz i just forget, but should u just go in there and ya kno, not raise your voice too much and just let it flow then let the engineer tweak the volume?

  • @briencrawford its the engineers responsiblilty he tells you if either to do so but if not then just do your part and the proper engineer does his thing

  • @papito1219 thanks! i hope that works cuz i dont wanna go in there at a normal volume and it sound boring lol

  • @briencrawford

its not you man also depending on equipment and how its properly used cause if its just a mic into a interphase connected to the computer you will a flat dry sound but with combinations of compressors, gates, and pre amps makes the total difference before i had any of it i had to work twice as hard just to get a decent sound then i invested in a lot of money and now i barely even have to worry about mixing

  • @papito1219 word! thats whats up!!!! u rap and engineer?

  • @briencrawford rapping only when needed or neccesary but engineer compose arrange music produced mix master the whole 9 man it took years but its all worth it

  • Lil Wayne does it it sounds good you r dum u no that

  • Max B can do it all day stacken

  • is it possible to just copy the vocals again then just to stack'em?

  • @StefonThaLion thats like delay it will sound wierd like a robot

  • stop being lazy and stack take the time to do it right

  • @papito1219 its not being lazy. I just want it to be perfect

  • @StefonThaLion

do you want to sound professional or do you want to sound amateur. when doing that copy past and shifting it slighting gives it an effect not neccesarily sounding like a dub sounding more like a phaser which is ineffective trust me

  • @StefonThaLion want it prfect then record it perfect bro it is what it is you want perfect sometimes you have to put forth the effort brah

  • @papito1219 I just wanted to know the best way to do it. Some rappers don't. I just wanted some better tips. If you dont think I try then check me out.

  • expert village definitely doesn't know what the hell they are talking about, doubling or "stacking" as he says, gives you a chorus effect and will become phasy if it is not performed well by the artist, and just duplicating the track and putting a delay on it doesn't give you the same effect, it just makes it louder and phasy, the point of doubling is that even the best artist will never ever EVER perform the same verse or whatever the exact same way, that natural chorus is what u r looking for

  • @jdeleon1234 you said it in one. Expert village is more like idiot village, well, from what i've witnessed in these "recording" series's.

  • @jdeleon1234 i agree. most people can sing their lines the same- anyway, whatever happened to experimentation and learning for yourself what works and what doesn't, i personally buzz from just recording and seeing how it turns out. Best results arent so planned out.

  • @FuturedaveyP Yes a lot of good things seem to happen during experimentation when u least expect it haha

  • @jdeleon1234 i feel you he trippin but pro's have more high tech gear to where they don't have to stack

  • @321dwood Professional studios do have top of the line high tech gear but a lot of Artist prefer to double their vox themselves instead of having some plug-in or other piece of gear try to replicate what that would sound like, but rarely do i ever see where they do it for a lot of bars in the song, doubling the whole chorus def is very popular but in the verses if they do decide to double it's usually parts here and their to accent certain words

  • @jdeleon1234 ya u right i hear but wat i was really trying to say was that with the gear they have the vocals on verses sound good alone

  • @jdeleon1234 yo i can feel you on that one man.. i am an artist as well that stacks my vocals all the time.. thee best thing i found it good for is like you said that natural chorus effect, and too it also brings the harmonizing out alot.. awesome comment dude...

  • @4rcedfedimpreza Thanx man, Audio is life haha

  • @4rcedfedimpreza so whats the right thing to do? cuz i have 0 knowledge when it comes to this recording whatsoever... =)

  • @jdeleon1234 Yeah your so right staking vocals is industry standard method for filling vocals and making them stick out in the mix bad advise not so expert village L:)

  • @jdeleon1234 daaamn dats truth!! chek out my songs they r dope ;D

  • @jdeleon1234 Fix it in the mix he says.....enough said

  • Unless you do more then one extra take. This is referred to as doubling. Stacking involves more then one extra pass. "Reverb like Effect" really? That's called phasing it is the natural time delay between the 2 passes. Expertvillage "shakes head"

  • i only stack my vocals for a chorus that gives u a more powerfull one even when you put down both verses

  • dude have you ever heard of editing "apple +E" (separate region noobs) slip mode , hand tool learn how to edit and timing doesn't matter you give the worst advice ive ever heard.

  • i total agree i hate theses amatur cats who think thats the right way i got 2 da los angeles recording school and they tell us the same thing do not stack your verses thats why people dont get signed the right way is 2 lay ur verse 1time all the way though then do an over dub or key words then record your hook or chorus three times pan 1 hook or chorus hard left center hard right then listen and tell me if u see a better sounding vocal tracks

  • MXL V69 Mogami Edition Tube Microphone

  • what is that mic's name ??

  • I got protools.... and since im wat he calls REALLY GOOD AT IT I do wat TUPAC DOES and i just record it threw then record it the same way again turn the track down, and pan it to the right about 35......or u can do what EMINEM DOES and record it threw take out all of the breathes, snap it to bar (put it on beat) then copy it and paste it to another track just a lil bit deeper, turn it down, and shift it about 24 to the left or right..... Or u can be a JAY-Z OR LIL WAYNE and go threw once wit nun

  • Comment removed

  • In Pro tools i enable the two red button so i can hear myself loud and good so when u edit it was be two wave bars but its really one vocal and then i record one more time and lower it and then i record on the left and right pan so total you get 5 tracks for one verse and if you mix well it wont sound nasty n like theirs many voices...you should try it.....Search Ososwagg

  • One Word......... Tupac

  • I need an example on stacking vocals. Like someone with a song where they tell me exactly where he did the stacking or something because i cant really picture this in my head?

  • IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE TYPE OF SONG YOUR DOING LIKE A SONG ABOUT YO LIFE AND STRUGGLE U WOULDNT STACK BECAUSE YOU WANT IT TO SOUND LIKE YOU TALKING TO THE PEOPLE LISTENIN BUT WHEN YOU DO STACK YOU PAN THEM A LIL ANYWAYS SO IT MAKES THE SOUND FULLER IT ADDS MORE POWER TO THE VOCAL BUT HEY PEOPLE DO STUFF DIFFERENT AS LONG AS IT SOUNDS GOOD IT DOESNT MATTER

  • i also stack vocals and it make my voice sound tougher than it exactly is, but its hard to time it perfectly

  • i no man i hat when people stack ther vocals it sounds nasty

  • this nigga dnt noe wut he tawkin bout i been stackin ma shit fa years

  • You only record the vocal ptiches 1 time, and then leave those ptiches there as the hook. No harmony isn't needed to accompanying the hook. This makes the recording sound more pleasing.

  • This idiot has no clue on what "vocal stacking" is. "Vocal stacking" isn't making copies of the same variant vocal pitches. "Vocal stacking" is recording slight variations of the original vocal pitches point in time and then recording those pitches at the same time. Meaning different varaints of the vocal will be different from the previous vocal with the same pitches.

  • Hey I've been to a couple of studios to record some songs etc. and there's always this debate about recording verses...

Is it better to do the whole verse in one go, or to cut it into some parts?

    What do y'all think?

I mean if you listen to some songs... like eminem now with "not afraid" I really doubt he did the verses in one go, as you put so much power in to your voice... to still keep it clear and correct thru the whole rhyme... I think he cuts em apart..

    How do you do it?

    thanks

  • @MrRhyMan when i was recordin, i done each verse separtly and then it was put together by beat maker at end, it was easyer way and less chance of messing up words,

it don't make much different as no one will notice how verse are done when you hear finaly take

  • @MrRhyMan i think its better to cut the verses in parts, especially if your a fast rapper and you really want the verse to be clear and hype, cuz if you go all the way through eventually ur gonna take lots of breaths and ur gonna go out of ur hype towards the end from takin all those breaths unless ur a slow rapper like plies of young jeezy for example they could do a verse all the way through wit no prob cuz the pace so slow and you wouldnt run out of breath

  • @RealityWorldNMuzik soo you think eminem, busta, luda etc. cut there verses so they can put 150 % in each and every bar? I know what you mean... and If I hear songs it's almost impossible to imagine them doin the whole verse in one shot... other thing is you need a good producer to cut them after without noticing a difference... which em would certainly have with dre... ahahaha thanks for replying

  • @MrRhyMan no doubt i know for a fact they do...lil wayne especially does it...even tho he is no where near good as em ive seen him do it numerous time on studio vidoes..im a rapper and i do it myself all the time...and yes ur right u do have to have a good producer where to edit ur vocals so thats it not noticable, its really easy to do but u also need a good recording program for it...cool edit and adobe audition are not good programs for it in my opinion

  • yeah...OR some sick ass plugins that do that shit for you....gotta lot

  • i always stack my vocs. it turns out okay so i aint got a problem with it.

  • This makes a lot of sense yo

    d-_-b DKS

  • david blaine its that u

  • I'm sorry, recording through the same verse twice is not recording two vocals twice lol

  • wich program is the best to record yourself on PC and make yout own tracks

  • well me personally, i recommend adobe audition 3 but other people may say differently.

  • is this not just called double tracking

  • He knows what he's talking about, it makes no sense to stack, people used to do that to make their voices in stereo but now theres plugins for that, i stack my choris in my songs 3 times only on occasion in songs but i make shure to pan two 50/50 and cut the one in the middle down low

  • Yeah, it brings out the emphasis, and gives you an opportunity to put in ad libs in the background.... and since when was it called 'stacking'? It's called overlays

  • @ExodusFaces

    uhmm... ghetto terminology? :/

  • @troyzapanta I get what you mean. But I've never worked with someone who used slang for processes of production. The only time we use slang in the studio is saying shit like 'spit some fire' 'blaze this joint' 'murder this track' which is all the same thing... but other then that, it's a pretty profesional atmosphere

  • @ExodusFaces

oh... I'm not a pro... hehe...

  • guess that means im really good cause all my shit stacked and dont none of it sound jumbled

  • i just duplicate the verse and pan one left and the other right

  • That's useless. I don't know why so many people do that. All that does is make the vocal louder. Does nothing to make it more powerful. If you're gonna do it that way, you should pitch one down and pitch the other one up. Otherwise, just record it again!

  • i stack 3 for hooks..and 2 less gain and pan them..i stack 2 for verses and then i do my ad libs but when i stack i lower the gain sounds way better
