I choose Nvidia because I have had nothing but trouble with past ATI cards (overheating, DVI ports failing, etc.) But, being a fanboy of either is just stupid, they both make great products for a good price, who cares which is currently faster? An 8800gt is almost 3 years old and can still play just about everything maxed. So basically anything over a GTX260 (4870) is overkill and you'll waste your money.
That doesn't make any difference, what else can the 5850 compare to? You wouldn't say "don't compare the 280 to 3870 because the 3870 is last gen" or whatever :P
@club4ghz, Those specifications are most likely fake. That sort of thing always happens, some site decides to release fake specs before the card is released. Im waiting to see what NVIDIA can offer for under $400 AUD but right now im looking at a 5850.

His "tests" are as specific as they can be. He knows ATI has the top dog cards for 99% of all real world situations now, so he tests specific games at specific settings and then claims "Fastest On YouTube."

You dont own a 5970 do you? Why dont you ask Trubritar how well a 5970 overclocks! The answer you'll get is at 10mhs overclock they over heat, thats scary! And a good warranty is what I would definately want with one of them.
You simply don't know what you're talking about... If you max out the fan on 5970 you'll get a 1GHz overclock max. But can't go higher because one 6pin and 8pin power connectors are not enough.
Watch other videos on youtube before you start talking about how good they are and how they overclock.

Very true but with water blocks it brings total cost to over $700 now that is a complete piss take so much for ATI being bang for buck, 2 air cooled 5870 would be a much better choice. They try and be enthusiast but my major grip is they dont have the warrenty to back it up last time i checked.
for the record i use my 2 5970s everyday at 790hmz core, and the temps are just fine, they are no different then the 4870x2s temp wise, sure they run hot, but they certainly aren't overheating by any means, and thats a 55mhz overclock, not 10mhz, just saying, iv had them at higher and they ran just fine, i just wasn't comfortable with the heat they were producing, but they still ran just fine, so don't say they overheat with a ten mhz overclock stan because its not true, like always man,
thats absolute bullshit about yuoll get 1ghz max i heard the same for the 4890 but in reality like 2% of them actually ever hit that clock the 5970 is a handicapped card in so many ways. If all of them were capable of 1ghz they would have clocked them higher than they did but they didnt because they dont want to stand by there cards warrenty wise, so they let you try then tell you to go fuck your self when it dies.
the reason they clocked the card so low is because they need to keep the maximum board power to 294W—under the defined 300W PCI-SIG electromechanical specifications

@stanbony you spoke the truth, Right now the most powerful single card solution comes from Ati and it has a fenomenal bang for buck factor. BTW I have a GTX280 bought it as soon as they launched, so now I'm slightly sad that I spent $1200, but that's how it goes with high end hardware.
ATi can do 24xAA in Crysis and Warhead when 16xAA is forced with Catalyst. In games where ATi cards can run 16xAA they can do up to 32xAA. Forcing AA with Catalyst doesn't affect framerate btw, only makes the game look more sharp.
hey stan, if its at all possible and you have the time, can you do an airfield flythrew run? that's the one run the i cant barely get 70fps average in maxed out, id love to see what your system can do there, because i get about 14 less fps then you on the avalanche map
Airfeild fly through is without a doubt the hardest run, If I remember correctly I got around 65 fps, I'll take a look and try it again, Also, I know you run 2 5970's if im not mistaken, And it would be nice for someone to tell these people the truth in Crysis warhead, remember, I never said 3 285's can beat an ATI setup at every game bench, just warhead.

Well yes, if you care only about Crysis and don't play anything other than that nVidia is the way to go. Quad 5870's don't perform as good as triple GTX 285 in Crysis because Crysis can't use more than two ATi GPUs in Crossfire. Warhead can use three but it only gives about 5 more FPS.
Since ATI and Nvidia gpu's are so different, Game developers have no choise to make there games for 1 or the other, its not a matter of paying a company to make there game for one or the other, they have no choice! and thats why game developers almost always code there games for Nvidia and not ATI.

Game can be coded well for both ATi and nVidia, but it's easier to take 5 millions of $ from nVidia and optimise their game only for nVidia GPUs. 3DMark Vantage is a good example, both ATi and nVidia GPUs work perfectly in it. Try to beat 4x 5870 in Vantage with 3x GTX 285... it's not possible even if you use LN2 to overclock your cards.

I will say this thou dump Vista move onto Win 7 I have two 9600GT 1GB not the fastest cards in the world but do the job nicely until I get my hands on a GTX380 but in Win 7 I saw a gain of around 10-15fps in most of my games so I would think you could hit 120 easy on your set up.

Crysis was built for nvidia and DIRT 2 was coded for ATI, swings and roundabouts i guess haha
But I'll stick with my 5850, it's faster than GTX285 and overclocks better while using less power and creating less heat :)
BTW ATI cards could technically run 16X but Nvidia has the patent for it AFAIK.

for the record i use my 2 5970s everyday at 790hmz core, and the temps are just fine, they are no different then the 4870x2s temp wise, sure they run hot, but they certainly aren't overheating by any means, and thats a 55mhz overclock, not 10mhz, just saying, iv had them at higher and they ran just fine, i just wasn't comfortable with the heat they were producing, but they still ran just fine, so don't say they overheat with a ten mhz overclock stan because its not true, like always man,

thats absolute bullshit about yuoll get 1ghz max i heard the same for the 4890 but in reality like 2% of them actually ever hit that clock the 5970 is a handicapped card in so many ways. If all of them were capable of 1ghz they would have clocked them higher than they did but they didnt because they dont want to stand by there cards warrenty wise, so they let you try then tell you to go fuck your self when it dies.

Every 5970 can do at least 950MHz, depends on who overclocks it and in what conditions.
I agree that dual 5870's are better choice than a 5970, they can overclock higher and have much better cooling.

the reason they clocked the card so low is because they need to keep the maximum board power to 294W—under the defined 300W PCI-SIG electromechanical specifications

9800 pro is an ATI card, I own one, sorry to say, thats about 5 years old and it was the last ATI card iv'e ever owened.
Sweet card and still runs flawlesly in my Dell I put in the fun room.

I agree! Cheaper and faster in many situations, But not all, especialy in the Enthusiest High end market, Lets put it this way! If I had money to only buy a single card at this moment, it would be a ATI 5870

@stanbony you spoke the truth, Right now the most powerful single card solution comes from Ati and it has a fenomenal bang for buck factor. BTW I have a GTX280 bought it as soon as they launched, so now I'm slightly sad that I spent $1200, but that's how it goes with high end hardware.

Can't ATI do 32x AA? Anyway nice benchmark, this game was built for Nvidia so naturally it will run better on Nvidia cards then ATI.

ATi can do 24xAA in Crysis and Warhead when 16xAA is forced with Catalyst. In games where ATi cards can run 16xAA they can do up to 32xAA. Forcing AA with Catalyst doesn't affect framerate btw, only makes the game look more sharp.

hey stan, if its at all possible and you have the time, can you do an airfield flythrew run? that's the one run the i cant barely get 70fps average in maxed out, id love to see what your system can do there, because i get about 14 less fps then you on the avalanche map

Airfeild fly through is without a doubt the hardest run, If I remember correctly I got around 65 fps, I'll take a look and try it again, Also, I know you run 2 5970's if im not mistaken, And it would be nice for someone to tell these people the truth in Crysis warhead, remember, I never said 3 285's can beat an ATI setup at every game bench, just warhead.

no without a doubt i cant beat your 117 average at 1920-1200, no way in hell, i got 104 with 8xaa with my setup, mind you thats at 1680-1050 because i only have a 22 inch monitor, if anythign il get better performance at higher resolutions wiht my set up, 100percent, but as it sits with the beta drivers im useuing and the lack of support for 5970 crossfire, stanbonys rig is faster then one of the best ATI set ups in crysis warhead, at least for now, and i say that with respect

Well yes, if you care only about Crysis and don't play anything other than that nVidia is the way to go. Quad 5870's don't perform as good as triple GTX 285 in Crysis because Crysis can't use more than two ATi GPUs in Crossfire. Warhead can use three but it only gives about 5 more FPS.

Since ATI and Nvidia gpu's are so different, Game developers have no choise to make there games for 1 or the other, its not a matter of paying a company to make there game for one or the other, they have no choice! and thats why game developers almost always code there games for Nvidia and not ATI.

Not really. Game can be coded well for both ATi and nVidia, but it's easier to take 5 millions of $ from nVidia and optimise their game only for nVidia GPUs. 3DMark Vantage is a good example, both ATi and nVidia GPUs work perfectly in it. Try to beat 4x 5870 in Vantage with 3x GTX 285... it's not possible even if you use LN2 to overclock your cards.

@stanbony I can give benchmark statistics done by tomshardware, if you want them and haven't already blocked me. A single 5870 vs a single Gtx 285, the 5870 came out on top, it even slightly beat the dual gpu 4870x2(Which i myself own)

Your poorly spelled title explains nvidia fanboys perfectly. I'd like to add for less money and 1 less card you get more performance from ati. Anyone can overclock and make it better than anything else. The base factory performance is what matters. And for the money right now ati is the best. For power, ati is also the best, but in a bit the 300 series will be released and nvidia likes to take giant leaps so we will see :3. Plus a game coded for nvidia cards, it would do better. Run 3dmarks.

Thats true ! There is no such pc atm that could even break 60 fps in crysis all maxed.
And to stanbony, this is nvidia game and it gives some advantage to your cards, but you have to admit that 5870>gtx 285. 4 vs 4 and 5870's would take the win.
There is a guy called etheehthusiast and he has 4x watercooled 5870 and he can't get near your score with better cards, so there must be something wrong with that test. But anyways you computer is a damn beast, no doupt ! peace

Nvidia scales better has better driver support and higher settings there is a reason why these cards cost that little bit more because they rock.
I will say this thou dump Vista move onto Win 7 I have two 9600GT 1GB not the fastest cards in the world but do the job nicely until I get my hands on a GTX380 but in Win 7 I saw a gain of around 10-15fps in most of my games so I would think you could hit 120 easy on your set up.
