Jimmy Carter and the rest of the "we're in a malaise" crowd can go fuck themselves. Only these pessimistic self-hating assholes are the ones who are in a malaise. Most Americans are extremely thankful that they live in this country, and are excited about the future, and don't pay any attention to the depressed liberal assholes who want to dictate to us how we should feel.

There are groups with special interests out there who would certainly be happy for you to think that you're in a malaise and use it for their own gains.
