Ploughing into the crowd was clearly not his fault.....I feel bad that he has to have this in his consciousness for the rest of this life. Maybe he feels that he is to be blamed
Any spectator who gets that close to a 400 hp car has a death wish or is woefully ignorant of the most obvious aspects of physics. Some even seem to be playing chicken. However, the organizers should have cordoned off the spectator areas much better. Simply using portable barricades and yellow tape with some security guards could have kept most under control. Too bad.
i tell you what everytime i see group b it makes me sad, i was born in 1990, exactly 1 year after the greatest category in all of history was binned for the simple fact that spectators have no brains just sawdust.. and f they made one small change to pen them all in and eep them back wed still be seeing quattros, 205's, and delta s4's, flatout around europe to best noise in the world, the vehicles themselves.
to be completely honest the only reason group b got dangerous was because of inconsiderate spectators... i mean now spectators dont get in the way because there not allowed and at the end of the day spectators are the problem 99% of the time.
freaking idiots. what a good idea. LOOK!! a car going really fast and mostly out of control! you know what would be awsome? standing right where we could get hit!
Controlling the spectators, choosing suitable stages and minimizing driver fatigue by limiting stage miles would have been a better choice then killing the most popular racing category in motorsports history. In the Corsica rally there was a stage witch was i think more then 80 KM long!
Portuguese spectators were really mad people. They wanted to see the cars so bad that they even stand in the track until the last moment.
Os portugueses nesta altura eram doidos por rally. Queriam tanto ver os carros e as manobras que se metiam na pista e mal passava o carro punham-se atrás dele.
@gerfall Shut up man -.-, the rally was like this in every country, the spectators killed the Group B, all of them around the world, rally was more interesting in that days, now is more football, but rally is still awesome, but you know, Group B will be always in our memories, memories of the rally lovers
my uncle nearly got run over by Tony Pond in his 6R4 at the 1985 or 86 (cant remember which) Manx rally, the car missed him but about 3 inches travelling at over 100mph
I was working for the BBC during the 1982 Portugues Rally ., Henri Toivonen & Walter Rhorl spoke to me regarding the danger of the massed spectators.. 4 years later of course Gp B was banned.. Henri was no longer with us after the Corsica tragedy
Nearly the same accident happend on the 4th Day of the 1987 Portugal Rally, when Joaquim Guedes Toyota go off the Road, simply AGAIN the Spectators where standing in the Road.
1 Spec. killed, 13 injuried.
Joaquim Guedes didnt get out off his Car, his Co-Driver Abreu said "Oh, that was just bad Luck, we try to finish the Stage......wont loose to much Time"
2010 Walter Röhrl said: "The Spectators in Portugal played thier own Bullfight on the Road."
I don't think that I will ever understand how the spectators didn't take into consideration the fact that maybe sometimes the driver won't be able to take tat corner and stood in the outside of it. This was so going to happen sooner or later. It's a real shame that because of the stupidity of some, everyone else had to miss out on the evolution of those awesome cars. Thank you for this great video Marv.
rallies are badly managed by FIA..... the courses are natural and off road but they should still be managed the same way as the closed courses of f1........ Designate specific spectator zones, put some tires and bars in front of trees and cliffs that are next to the turns and enforce security measures on the cars, real security not power reduction. They could have forced the use of fuel cells and ban chemicals mixed with the fuel but they didnt. We know the result.
I just dont get it the Group B teams were doing excelent until the fans came along i just dont get when people get in the way of 400+BHP beast if the spectator control was better Group B would still be around the cars were not the problem it was the spectators
Stupid spectators standing on the outside of the corner and in the road. Just stupid. The whole event also seems badly organized.. Thanks for a good vid Marv, looking forward to part 2.
@HoccyB I'm portuguese myself and a big rally fan, more so back in the Group B days. Things have evolved a lot since that accident, that for you is probably just another youtube video, but for us, a big shock at the time, collectively. Sure, the writing was on the wall, but these were the eighties, not the politically correct 21st century. Of the people who died there that day, there was a mother and her child, so you see, there is the side of tragic loss you seem to fail in grasping.
@Marillionado I understand that this was in the 1980's but standing in the outside of a corner on a rally event isn't the brightest idea. Most crashes happen in the outside, so that's why you don't stand there. I understand that this is a tragic event, but the people that got killed didn't have to stand there. They had a choice of where they could watch the rally. When you're over 18 years old you're responsible for yourself, and all of the people could have done otherwise.
A tragedy certainly for the child who had little choice in the matter. And not to minimize the tragedy of the mother being killed, however, she was negligent for putting her child in harm's way. I'm a fan of old school auto racing but recognize that standing within a few meters of a speeding car with no barrier in between is careless, whether or not others are doing the same.
@ShootingSam It did indead, which the FIA was not too happy about.. So as soon as they had a chance to knock rally back down to the #2 spot they took it.
You stupid fucktard portugese your the reason groupe b is gone

but you can't help but think it was the organizers and spectators fault
