At my friend's wedding, the groom asked the choir to sing Everything I Do from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Instead, the bride ended up marching down the aisle to this.
had a tape of all these songs as a child along with my grandfather clock and all the other ones like teddy bears picnic. cant wait to have kids so i can sing them all with them. the old ones really are the best.
I just watched "Robin Hood" with Russell Crowe. When I was small I watched Robin Hood on television, and this song stuck in my head. I was surprised I remembered only the first line of it, but.. had to come and find it lol.
I love the show with Richard Greene and this theme song bu t Errol Flynn is the best Robin Hood ever. Haven't seen the new Robin Hood yet but want to.
Thank you. This was my favourite TV show theme song as a child. Haven't heard it for 40 years and still remember the opening verse! Glad to have found it again. @talladale thank you too.
Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore riding through a ford/ Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore, with his horse Concord/He steals from the rich/And gives to the poor/Mister Moore/Dennis Moore, Dennis Moore.
I had the "flexible" plastic toy Robin Hood sword when I was a kid. They don't make T.V. shows like this any more. I'm glad I grew up as a "Baby Boomer!!!!"
Ah, those were the days! - When REAL men wore tights and lived in the forest and spoke with posh accents!
I grew up with this on TV each week. We'd imitate Richard Green as kids, making 'bows' out of canes and string, with 'arrows' made out of little pea stcicks. A lump of 2"x1" wood became your 'sword', and suddenly you were 'Robin Hood' fighting any other kid that fancied a duel! - Great times!
Fast forward to 2008. Witness the sick hybrid of the Pied Piper of Hamlin coupled with Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men in the form of Joe Bama and Barney Frank as Friar Tuck, the merriest of all his men. Bama, leading the rats or in this case, sheep.....with the help of his piccolo, aka the media to the river to drown. Steal from the rich, re: bad, give to the poor, re: good, and you have the makings of a new weekly tv show.
Frank Skinner had a joke about the lyrics and how the Merry Men were happy to help the people of King but were insistent that Robin set aside some time so they could have plenty of "Time to Sing"
my father says he too was brought up on robin hood in the later 50s early 60s. The actor was Richard Green, and I still smile every time I hear the song.
Didn't some poor bride in the 90's walk up the aisle to this instead of Robin Hood prince of thieves soundtrack 'everything i do' by Bryan Adams? I bet she was furious.
Brilliant, still remember all the words! There was also a rude version we sang as bairns.....something starting" Robin Hood saw a nude riding through the glen,Friar Tuck ran like **** to tell the merry men" Great days!
thought id come and have a look at some original robin hood stuff seen as im in the new film with russel crowe thats being filmed in wales. so i beat you mister talladale haha.
I'm so glad somebody's still enjoying this happy theme because I was one of the kids singing the chorus! Dick James is the singer, and, as I was good friends with his son, Steven, at school, I got invited to sing at the recording along with a few others. Our 'pay' was a large box of chocolates, each, on our way out. We thought this was fantastic! I can still proudly say, in all honesty, that I recorded at Abbey Road Studios, later to be made famous by the Beatles.
@talladale Hey that is an awesome story, thanks so much for sharing. How many ppeople today can actually say they were part of this theme song?To be paid with a box of chocolates is so fun to hear, you wouldnt see that go on in todays movie making. You should be so lucky to have been a part of this.I can remember watching all Robin Hood episodes as a child in the 60s,I think every kid wanted to be THE PRINCE OF THIEVES, Cool story.May your grandchildren pass it on to their children.
Thanks for the comments. It was a lot of fun. We had about six rehearsals, and then did it in one take. I didn't know that Dick James went on to do so well with his music company. I'm also amazed at how many people saw and commented on this T.V. theme. Take care, Talladale.
@talladale I love this song. you were so lucy to sing in the chorus. I didn't know that this is how the complete song was like. I only remember the first 16 words. Nothing about coming to Sherwood Forest. etc.I watched this series on TV when I was a kid.
@mvv8383 Yes, it was just sheer luck that I happened to go to the same school as Dick James's son, Stephen. (Anson Rd Primary School between Willesden Green and Cricklewood). We were pals, and I got asked to sing along with a few others. I'm still amazed at how many people remember this. It was a great T.V. show! Such nice innocent days!
@talladale I'm glad to be able to make contact with someone involved in this recording, because I've always wondered who the french horn players were, imagining that they are probably famous players from one of the symphony orchestras - Denis Brain? Alan Civil? Douglas Moore? Do you happen to know?
Robin Hood is a quasi-historical person who has had mythological tales attached to his name but with some hints of real historical traces. A real person going by that name probably did exist sometime around the era of his legend but almost certainly did not do 95% of the things attributed to him. Just like Jesus.
The term 'Hood' is more probably a shortened form of the American slang term 'Hoodlum,' related to the German 'Hudelum,' meaning 'a disorderly person.' Hoodlum only entered common slang in the last two centuries, so the chances of the word 'Hood' being applied to Robin in reference to his outlawry are minimal.
'Hood' in the Middle Ages existed as Old English 'Hud,' meaning 'to cover up,' and so would probably have indicated that Robin wore some form of disguise, not that he was a'hoodlum.'
While the office of 'Sheriff of Nottingham' didn't come into existance until 1449, there was a 'High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests' from 1068 until that date.
As to Friar Tuck, the Dominicans, Franciscans, Carmelites and Augustinians (the Four 'Great Orders' of Friars, were well established in England by the time of Geoffrey Chaucer (c. 1343 - 1400,) so he could easily be a composite rather than totally fictional character.

to christopher2906------- that's amazing. i never thought that they would have used such a slang term back then. i guess some gangsters wore hoods that covered up their faces, creating a disguise.
