Buying a new console costs 270€ euros here in finland. If your sinet is in place, they will give a new xbox 360 within the same price (70€ / 100$) if your previous console is irreparable. (idiotic-english: "un-fixable").
4 RED LIGHTS = Your AV- cable is not correctly attached to the Xbox 360- console, it's damaged, or the plug is broken inside the console.
If these theories, and trying to fix them using xbox support won't work, only choises are to "trying to fix it" by yourself, wich in this case means breaking it completely, cuz the box is not meant to be opened by any1 else than the correct company. If your sinet is in place, they will fix it or send a new console to replace the broken

After a number of times the lifetime keeps getting shorter...when I first did the towel trick my 360 worked for another 3 weeks or so...then it kept getting shorter..and has gotten down to being a daily drill...I completely stopped playing my 360 and am now trying the towel trick again since ocmign across this video....
a fatal hardware error (3 red lights) gets logged somewhere, so when the xbox starts it reads the log, notices the hardware failure and shows the RROD. the towel trick forces the console to overheat which resets it, one thing it does is clear this log allowing your xbox360 to start until the "error" is once again logged.
So, the towel trick will eventually kill your Xbox 360. Kinda reminds me of tobacco. Unless you quit, you keep using it and using it and using it until...
I haven't cracked open a 360, but I am familiar with computer parts overheating. If my guess is correct, then the thermal paste between the heatsink and the processor is dryin up. The towel and other fan covering methods of superheating the unit would help to break up the thermal material to the point of better contact with the heat sink. The prob coming back would be due to the material drying again, which it would continue to do until replaced.
You're right, it is the thermal paste drying up/disappearing. I replaced mine a couple of months ago and already I'm getting rrod. Let's face it, they used shit parts and got their tolerances wrong just so they could get their console out quicker than sony.
Honestly, Ive tried it for myself, It works, perfectly. If it doesn't work you should use your warranty, Look on a craigslist for a service or get an inter cooler. I'm glad if this helped you.

the towel fix/towel trick actually messes up the x box even more ( i read it at x box support website so dont get mad at me ) but i tried it and every time i turned it on i would have to do it again and eventually it will just say e74 error so dont waste your time doing this because if you do you either have to send it in or have someone fix it but i would do it myself because its only like $20 for a x thing whatever its called but its better than sending the x box in or wasting $60 on acheapfix
this dude is right, there are plastic components inside your xbox that can and will be damaged by doing this fix. it is temporary when it does work because youre not fixing the problem. There are many problems that cause the 3 red lights as it is a general system failure warning. usually reflowing the BGA under the CPU or GPU will fix this but sometimes you need to do it to the RAM, northbridge or southbridge. google search 360 secondary error codes to find out what is wrong with your system.
NOT a good idea! a temporary fix at best which could cause an electrical frie! the problem is usually caused by a lack of cooling, the main flaw in the x box when designed was in order to fit the disc tray they made the mistake of making the heatsink (cooling fan for the main processor) too small causing x box 360's to overheat + breakdown adding an extra fan to the side of the x box or just keeping it in a well ventilated area should prevent this from happening, whatever you do dont do this!!!

It *can* permanently fix the issue. It works by overheating the Xbox so any broken components re-bond. Once cooled, those connections settle and harden again.
I'm not saying it will work all the time, but it fixes the Xbox the same way it breaks.

I think I know how this is working there are two possible problems for the 'ring of death'
1) the solder joints are cold (I think this trick heats them up again and un - warps the motherbord, but when it gets cold again, worped motherbord
2) the X clamps

4 red rings means the AV cables aren't plugged in correctly. 3 means hardware failure. Not sure about 2 or 1.

This is a good trick for out-of-warranty Xboxes. I hadn't played mine for 3 months, and 30 minutes after reading about this 'towel trick', I was playing Lost Odyssey once again, mwahaha
I just hope I can beat it fast enough, because if I get stuck not being able to play it even *closer* to the end, I'm going to be sad

After a number of times the lifetime keeps getting shorter...when I first did the towel trick my 360 worked for another 3 weeks or so...then it kept getting shorter..and has gotten down to being a daily drill...I completely stopped playing my 360 and am now trying the towel trick again since ocmign across this video....

a fatal hardware error (3 red lights) gets logged somewhere, so when the xbox starts it reads the log, notices the hardware failure and shows the RROD. the towel trick forces the console to overheat which resets it, one thing it does is clear this log allowing your xbox360 to start until the "error" is once again logged.

****WHY THIS HAPPENS***
I haven't cracked open a 360, but I am familiar with computer parts overheating. If my guess is correct, then the thermal paste between the heatsink and the processor is dryin up. The towel and other fan covering methods of superheating the unit would help to break up the thermal material to the point of better contact with the heat sink. The prob coming back would be due to the material drying again, which it would continue to do until replaced.

You're right, it is the thermal paste drying up/disappearing. I replaced mine a couple of months ago and already I'm getting rrod. Let's face it, they used shit parts and got their tolerances wrong just so they could get their console out quicker than sony.

Honestly, Ive tried it for myself, It works, perfectly. If it doesn't work you should use your warranty, Look on a craigslist for a service or get an inter cooler. I'm glad if this helped you.

This sometimes works because the towels make the Xbox overheat, triggering 2 red rings.
Then unwrap it and leave it to cool down. The 2 red rings should soon go away, and the 360 should work.
It sort of "Forgets" the RROD and you can play your games freely.
BTW it worked for me

the towel fix/towel trick actually messes up the x box even more ( i read it at x box support website so dont get mad at me ) but i tried it and every time i turned it on i would have to do it again and eventually it will just say e74 error so dont waste your time doing this because if you do you either have to send it in or have someone fix it but i would do it myself because its only like $20 for a x thing whatever its called but its better than sending the x box in or wasting $60 on acheapfix

this dude is right, there are plastic components inside your xbox that can and will be damaged by doing this fix. it is temporary when it does work because youre not fixing the problem. There are many problems that cause the 3 red lights as it is a general system failure warning. usually reflowing the BGA under the CPU or GPU will fix this but sometimes you need to do it to the RAM, northbridge or southbridge. google search 360 secondary error codes to find out what is wrong with your system.

NOT a good idea! a temporary fix at best which could cause an electrical frie! the problem is usually caused by a lack of cooling, the main flaw in the x box when designed was in order to fit the disc tray they made the mistake of making the heatsink (cooling fan for the main processor) too small causing x box 360's to overheat + breakdown adding an extra fan to the side of the x box or just keeping it in a well ventilated area should prevent this from happening, whatever you do dont do this!!!

LOL DO NOT use this method! The towel trick may fix your xbox for the moment, however it WILL stop working again in a matter of days or weeks!

It *can* permanently fix the issue. It works by overheating the Xbox so any broken components re-bond. Once cooled, those connections settle and harden again.
I'm not saying it will work all the time, but it fixes the Xbox the same way it breaks.
