  • wmg sucks

  • I dont know what happened, but movies just arent as good as the classics in the clips! Yes their are still great classics coming out in the theaters today but is is rare that it competes with classics. Theirs nothing like a good classic film.

  • No audio?!

    You gotta be kidding me!!

  • On the Waterfront anybody? come on, marlon brando's debut!

  • On the Waterfront was not Brando's debut...

  • I record this every time its on! wth theres a lot missing...

  • Does anyone perhaps know the name to the music played during the Chaplin segment?

  • whats the song in the start of the short film

  • Max Steiner sure could write music --him and Wagner and Richard Strauss and all the other German epic composers he cribbed from. He admitted that he was taking speed when he wrote that score to "Gone With The Wind." It was the best thing he ever wrote!

  • Why is this squished into widescreen? It looks weird. The station broadcasts most old movies in pan and scan.

  • aww i love the old movies im 19 now and i think the younger generation should watch the old movies first before we throw some of the crap they have now. itll make them appreciate the real magic of film. this sorta gave me the shivers its soo wonderfully nostalgic love TCM

  • OMG! You're so right! I'm 16 and most of my favourite films are old. I wish other people my age understood!

  • mithol: I'm 17 and I like old movies. I hate it when kids think a movie sucks because it's in black and white or how some people prefer full screen for a widescreen movie!

  • Same Here

  • Ballet: About what?

I haven't been on this video in AWHILE so I don't even know what you're responding to. lol

  • I'm responding to what you said about teenagers these days not appreciating classic films.

  • Ballet: Oh, I see. Thanks.

It's too bad that they don't, 'cause if it weren't for these movies, do you really think we'd have the movies we have today?

  • Seriously It's just sad.

  • Ballet: Tragic is more like it.

Actually it isn't just teens. Adults will complain that a movie's 'too slow' and so on.

  • My God, there's hope for my generation!

  • elbe: Yes, there is. Yes, there is. ;)

  • i know in school we were going to wacth helen keller miracle worker

and i said is it going to be the the old one?

and people were like no one like black and white movies i need color in mine

    ugh i got so mad

  • DiGi: I know. I don't see how color makes much of a difference. Color films aren't bad, but people need to realize that B&W can be just as good.

  • yeah i know buttttttttttttt its just at my school newer is better. and no one knows like bette davis or joan crawford OR EVEN SHIRLEY TEMPLE! i know i know but its just black and white movies are better but the new movies arnt half as good

  • DiGi: Well I kind of expect alot of people [adults included] not to know the old stars. But I just wish they were more open-minded.

I think it's a little unfair to say all recent movies aren't as good 'cause Hollywood made alot of corny B-films then too.

Not every old movie is a masterpiece and not every new one is crap.

  • oh yes you are right.

it is sad thoow but i mean is now evrey thing is computer animated.

but you are right not all movies srnt bad

  • DiGi: Well sometimes the animation is necessary, but it does go overboard too often.

Usually the best movies are during the Oscar season [fall/winter] and the 'sludge' is during the Blockbuster season [late spring/summer].

  • yes yes i do like color films im just trying to say that you sohould open your mind to older thing like black and white movies people just say that they are bad because thare is no color and alot of kids at my school never wacthed a b/w film

  • DiGi: Don't tell me, tell them. ;)

  • i have and thare like yeah thare stupid cuz they are old

  • DiGi: I know, I was just being kinda sarcastic.

  • Right on. Nobody I work with understand why the majority of the movies I have are old, and we're all late 20s/early 30s. Makes my jaw drop that they've never seen The Women, All About Eve, The Grapes of Wrath, or Stalag 17. Of course I live in Korea so it's kind of understandable. :)

  • I'm 18 and for the last year I've fallen in love with older films after avoiding them for most of my youth. Now I rarely watch anything else. I also upload great scenes from classics, if you want to check out my homepage.

My favorite part of the montage was with the Gone With the Wind music (featuring the most climatic cigarette smoking scene in cinema)--I'm a sucker for romances, and, above all things, Casablanca.

  • Lots of youngsters HAVE watched old movies. You guys make way too big deal about the few who don't, most of whom simply aren't big fans of movies as a whole, and thus, don't care to seek out old ones. And so what? Why worry that they don't share your hobby? That you're teens who watch old films is not an impressive or rare feat though, so stop boasting. Some could assume the worst of a kid who's consumed so much film you know.

  • Why are you harping on them? Where i come from the fact that i'm 21 and like old movies IS a rare feat. Most people don't believe it when i tell them and most people my age laugh at me or just don't care when i talk about TCM or anything related to old movies. Don't get me wrong, i do know quite a few my own age who, too, like old films, but the majority do not..and they ARE big fan's of movies as a whole

  • Forget what your friends might think. I'm 16 years old and I absolutely ADORE old films and I'm not ashamed of saying it. I mean, come on, movies back then were absolutely fantastic, they were the best. Who cares what other people think, as long as you're proud and happy to be so young and to like old movies, that's all that matters. And I know a few people my age who like these old movies too, which is good. Classic movies forever!

  • In 2008-9 there are probably more people who follow movies released in 2008-9 than there are people who prefer older ones. In 1968-9, there were probably more people who followed movies released in 1968-9 than those who preferred ones from the.. 20s and 30s. That's natural and inevitable. But you know what else is? That MANY people of all ages would nevertheless go out of their way to catch up with older movies that obviously haven't vanished from existence. So whats the big deal?

  • yea i'm only 14 and i love to watch jimmy stewart or doris day movies <3 personally i love the 40s-70s(also late 30s) era i know thats a wide spread but its all super old to my friends

  • Why are you telling this to me?

  • idk werent you saying something about teens liking old movies?

  • Yeah, I was saying that I don't like to hear them bragging about it! If you like it, you like it, but there's no need to mention your age in an attempt to impress people. Its not like the movies were only made to be watched by the audiences of its own time period. Those involved KNEW that future audiences would be watching these movies as well, so there's nothing outstanding about the fact that we do.

  • Oh, I love that channel, and I love those movies!

  • Wonderful but if you really want to see the full one, aDREAMERkid uploaded it all. :D I, too, like this and I was happy that this person uploaded it all.

  • Thanks for posting this. Just ignore the complaints. It's not your fault you couldn't post the entire thing nor is it a big deal. I appreciate you posting what you could.

  • Maggie, don't get offended. I'm sure everyone will say that they feel happier to see some than none at all.

Does anybody know the name of the song playing in the background at the beginning?

  • It's from the soundtrack to "Citizen Kane"

  • Please try again. I get such joy from watching this.

  • Again... Youtube does not allow me to upload the mp2 format therfor I cannot post the whole montage...

ONE MORE COMPLAINT AND I TAKE THE WHOLE THING DOWN. Alrighty....

  • If you'd have read the description you would know that I had formatting issues. I do have the whole segment but I don't have the software to convert it to the right format. Blame it on youtube if anyone for not allowing me to upload the mp2 format...

  • Oh my gosh! I've been looking all over for this! Thanks for posting!

  • I tried to upload a VHS taped version onto my computer so I could upload it but the quality came out quite lousy. It's very annoying actually. I can try to put it if you want, but it's going to be very bad...unless anyone has any suggestions about improving the quality. I can try to upload it again.

  • I love TCM <3 I always watch it that channel... please upload the rest

  • This is awesome!!! YOu don't know how long I have been looking for this.

Do you know where I can download the full film?

    Thanks,

    Elaine

  • Please, please, pleeeeease post the full montage. I really love this. Also, the widescreen format sort of makes it difficult to distinguish films since it distorts it a bit.

  • Really! The whole Wide World! The Entire Internet !!! AND No One, not one Person has this!!! Unbelievable!!!! I even posted a message some time ago on TCM and no one has it there either...:(

  • This is a wonderful reminder of this extraordinary piece of work. Ah the movie love that unites us!

  • you suck

  • pleasepleasepleaseplease upload the whole thing!!?! I've tried recording this in its entirety off of tcm, but I always end up missing the first few seconds. do it in 2 parts if you must!!! thanks :)

  • for the love of god...please somebody post the whole montage. thank you.

  • Maggie, it is a MORTAL SIN that you are not posting the entire montage. Keep the letterboxing but fix the problem! You're killing me!

  • Chuck Workman's segment "100 years at the movies" shown on 62th Academy award in 1990 was much much better... but i cant find it.

  • Hansen37: I think you mean Precious Images, if you type that in you should be able to find it.

  • No, Precious images was made in 1986, the segment was shown in 1990 during the 62th award ceremony. Trust me, its much much better than even 1994's version .

  • Brilliant {theprojectionist}

  • I wish we could see the whole thing in full screen format. Absolutely wonderful. It, of course, brought tears to my eyes and reminded me of all my favorite movies. Now I have a craving to see Gone With the Wind again!

  • Full screen format? You've got to be kidding me.

  • Why do we still have to wait for the whole montage? I really thik someone out there must have it. Oh I looked at the Precious montage referred to in this thread somewhere but the Original is much better. So anyone please post the original?

  • Yes, it's a bit frustrating. It cuts off even before the Brando On the Waterfront clip. Hmmm. I'm going to look to see if I have this buried somewhere in my parents house. I doubt it. I hope somebody has some luck finding the whole thing. Still it's nice to have the first half ..better than nothing.

  • Thank you

  • This is outstanding! Thank you so much!

Please work on the final four minutes...

so many want to see it!

  • I used to love to watch this montage. I remember having it taped a while back. It'd be really great if you could upload the whole thing. The ending is very good.

  • PLEASE PLEASE post the entire 9:00 minute version!!!!

  • Loved it!! Love the classics, they don't make them like this anymore!!!

  • Wish it didn't look squashed...

  • Yeeesss! This was exactly the video I was searching for. I love when TCM shows this.

  • Aw man, cuts off right before Orson Welles busts a move.

  • so i guess MOMA (museum of modern art ) archives a lot of these old films. pretty cool.

  • I love you for posting this. I hope somebody can post the complete film, but I'm happy with this. I haven't seen it in years. Thank you.

  • I wish you could upload the entire thing, but it did cut off at what seemed like a good ending. If you didn't say you were unable to put the whole footage on, i would have thought that that was the end.

  • Thanks... This was great...BUT, where's the rest? The rest of it was so awesome... I love that short piece by Chuck Wilson...Please try to put that one up and let me know as soon as you do...thanks

  • Thanks for telling us abut Precious Images. Cool. Now where is the full 9 minute version of 100 Years at the movies? Please post it ASAP!!!

  • Ditto

  • where did you download it?

  • i remembered it being longer though

  • Read the description. Thanks.

  • please upload the whole thing, maggie!

  • i love it

  • Where's the rest of it meng? I Wanted 2 see the end! U let me down!

  • I adore this <3

  • also-

chuck workman created it for tcm and I believe someone else.

  • Nice job. I understand your constraints. For what you had to work with, excellent job. 4*

  • please upload the entire 9 minutes- without the letter box!

  • Please read the description. Thanks.

  • This is a film by Chuck Workman, made for the opening of the TCM channel. Full frame full time version coming soon. See Precious images on Youtube if you like this.

  • Also the the Earliest version of Ben-Hur entitled "The Chariot Race" (1907)

  • I seen this on a few occasions on tv it has

    1. Butterflys (Cines production) 1905, Italy or france production probably france because their films were handpainted as early as 1905

    2. the Great Train Robbery (1903)

  • Hey, thank you so much for uploading this! I love it!

  • I LOVE this feature, but could you post a complete copy without the errant letterboxing? It would be greatly appreciated as I've been wanting someone to post this on YouTube for awhile so I can embed it in an article I've been wanting to post on my website. Thanks!
