  • The double bass thing is done by a lot of people. They grow with just the double pedal and have the second kick drum just because it's cool looking. (That's the actual reason. Metal drummers and fans like big looking kits.)

  • u all shud see all his odr vids n den comment ! u dumpheads.! comparing him wid travis ?????????? ROFLMAoooooooo...both ar frm diff genre ! man common grow up !

  • when he said triplets, he's playing 1/4 note triplets. 6 over 4

  • snare sounds like shit!

  • Whoa, bro.

    Whoa.

  • ok thumb me down just because you guys like him...

  • no mic u FUCKTARD thats why it has that sound

  • what? i can see the mic asshole

  • i said there's no mic and it's not triggered u motherfucker

  • As some of you mentioned before, at around 1:40 min he says "triplets" but really doesn't play triplets.

Well, he doesn't play triplets with his right arm and he doesn't play them off time, those are dotted eighth notes (one or two guys also said that before).

Anyways, heel-toe rocks and it sure helps to bring more life into your left foot-playing.

    Great idea and cool video!

  • You know when your playin and you hit the hi hat and close the pedal immediately after resulting in a tsst sound...can someone tell me what that technique is called? I know it has a name I just dont know what

  • I think it's called the "tsst" technique. It was invented by Hitler, and you're fucking stupid for not knowing it.

And you call yourself a drummer.

    <3

  • I didnt say I was a drummer you Derek Roddy wannabe, hence the question...that you couldnt answer because your nothing but a tampon application device

  • Hahaha, dude, I was kidding. Chill out.

  • @Darkkorners pee soup !

  • this is very helpful

  • thnks, i practice heel-toe but don't used when play with my band .. :(

  • i'd like to do this but me feet are too big :(

  • Buy Axis Longboards then.

  • na u just gotta slide ur foot down, u can clearly see derek doing it

  • Foot size isn't a factor, it can be done with any pedal, any foot size.

  • What about dick size?

I hear if you've got a third leg, you can go like 23923248723487 bpm.

I shouldn't reveal all my secrets to the public, 'cause I'm the only one who deserves to be this good... and fast. I hope you realize I've done you a favor.

  • @Anuz92

Any longboard pedal will work for any shoe size up to 13 i have no fucking idea how women's sizes are numbered...

  • You know what they say about dudes with big feet, right?

Your socks must cost so much money.

  • @BAAH4000 no way . i'm a 13 double e . practice alot . you'll get there.

  • Could anyone help me to tune my bass drum to a nice low metal-like sound. Kinda like he has. Send private message/comment on my profile. Thanks.

  • like in metal songs? those are edited bass drum hits. metallica does that alot.

  • Was this before Roddy joined with Mienl cymbals, cause I saw a lot of Sabians around. Could some one tell me when this was and how long Roddy was he with Sabian for? Thanks for what ever I get.

  • Before he switched to Meinl. On a barely related note, this was also before he was sponsored by Sonor.

Ask Derek yourself how long he was with Sabian - the link to his YouTube page is in the description. I'm not even sure he was ever officially "sponsored" by Sabian. He has a shit ton of cymbals.

  • im getting new cymbals soon so im just wondering what kind of cymbals i should get i really like meinl but im still not sure what model or brand PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!PLEASE and by the way what pedal do you recomend

  • sabian AAX

    fucking amazing cymbals

  • Go to guitar center or a local pro drum shop. Bring the cymbals you want to replace and explain to the employees that you're going to be there awhile trying out cymbals. Try out as many as you can. Keep a mental list of the ones you like and compare them to the ones you have. Then decide what your budget is. Don't fucking pay ANY attention to what brand or model it is.

Pedals are personal preference. See what feel works for you. Even the cheapest pedals can be tweaked to your likings.

  • Would you recommend Sabian HHX Evolution crashes? I think they might be really to thin.

  • It's up to you. Personally, I like the whole line of HHX Evolution crashes. They cut right through the mix like they're supposed to and have nice bright modern sound. If you're a hard hitter who breaks cymbals like it's nobodies bizz, then I'd go with something heavier.

  • i agree with fremontmetalhead but dont buy zildjian crashes!. there very thin and break fast. atleast thats from my personal experience

  • yeah hes good but kollias could kick his ares with one foot, sorry.

  • I like your carpet Derek.

  • that's what she said

  • oh shit nice burn man

  • axis fucking everywhere

    argh i want :(

  • are you from fremont ohio?? i saw the fremontmetalhead. just curious.

  • Nah. Fremont, California

  • ??????????????????????????????

  • i love the triplet exercise

  • 1:20: 2 bassdrums with a double basspedal? Stupid....

  • he just has this cause it looks more metal

  • OK : ) But I still don`t get the point... sorry!... why can`t he just use the second bassdrum?

  • Maybe he does...... maybe he just has it tuned differnetly for a different sound.... who knows....

  • Mabye...

  • he has one bassdrum tuned lower without triggering and one with triggers

    thats why

  • OK, thanks

  • Tard, always read the description.

  • Oh.... you`re right :P

  • Lol, just like pills... read the description :p

  • I`ll try to remember! :P:P

  • minnemann kit?

  • anyone know what snare he's got? message me please.

  • Why dont u message him?

  • @ falkechr000

Derek was using a Sonor Delite 14x6 Snare at this time, i think he is still using it today

  • my bad i ment joey SRRY

  • thank you finally someone agrees with me im not sayin jordan sucks either but hes not as good as rodey

  • he like the best metal drummer ever way better then that over rated tard in slipknot

  • Joey Jordison? He's pretty damn good and I agree, way overrated.

  • Thanks! ;)

  • amazing drum role on 4:18!

  • youh !

    amazing

  • dotted eighths not triplets...c'mon derek. you still rock ...

  • axis pedals, i need those pedals

  • Does the pony tail help with weight ratio and keeping centered on the throne? I need one.

  • i think theres a small wire feeding the pony tail pigs blood to keep it well nourished and maintain its weight and balance

  • Cool stuff;)

  • axis pedals without end on the ground =D

  • Rich man! :P

  • I was thinkin' to myself for a long time lol

    why the hell

does he have a double bass pedal and a double bass drum? lol

    thats kinda useless I guess..

  • yes it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i saw in a few videos that he has the other v¿bass drum with a single pedal and this one sounds very different, that why.

he uses the double bass pedal on 1 bass drum, and the single pedal on the other to have different sounds

  • heel toe really does work i ues it all the time

  • whats the thing that looks like a splash wen they show his feet.... upper right corner... just like a half other a cymbal almost right above his beater

  • idk but it looks like his hammer is hittin it lol

  • I have no clue what you're talking about - I don't see anything.

  • you err..... you mean... the bottom of his shorts?! lol!!

  • yay! I do that all of the time!

  • and who says death metal guys can't groove just as good as the jazz guys

  • retards maybe o.O

  • derek roddy's the best, Not of all drummers but an amazing drummer

  • so was martin lopez he could play death metal progressive and jazz but to bad he's not in opeth anymore

  • where'd he go? i actually just found out about opeth and like The Faceless yesterday.

  • eh i don't like the faceless to much

and he had some rare blood disease and he had some problem with the band i think idk that's what i've heard i think their newest cd isn't that great but there older stuff is really good and creative

  • Don't be so ignorant.

  • I'll be as ignorant as I want! :)

  • dont be so ignorant!

i have no idea why but dont

  • i figured out somthing along these lines during a long car ride yesterday

    quite fun.

  • lmfao!!

  • awesome! time to practice =P

  • i don't see how ur heel is hitting???..is it hitting the little black part where the foot is of are u moving ur foot up

  • he hits the hihat pedal and notice that he releases his feet right afterwards and the leg-weight stands on the heel. i could have explained it better in spanish good luck!

  • the sound is so fu*ked on this video, when the camera angles change

  • That's obviously because the shitty audio comes from the camera mic, and the rest from the nice, expensive mics.

  • idol.

  • isn't that what bonham does?

  • I'm sure he did many times over... but it wasn't something exclusive to Bonham... it's actually a pretty common technique. This is just Derek's interpretation and application for it, along with some workout tips...

  • search 'Dennis chambers open solo' to watch this technique pushed to the absolute limits

  • and btw Dereck is my hero too !!! Gawd this guy is amazing

  • for those of you complaining with feet being to large for the heel-toe method, I have an idea. haven't tried it, but notice how he slides his foot forward and back to compensate for the short hihat pedal? that might work. maybe.

  • I agree. Chris Adler of Lamb Of God does that. Also the heel doesn't necessarily have to be on the pedal. I've been playing the heel-toe method for 6 years and as long as you get enough force on the footboard it doesn't matter where your heel is.

  • Great and totally useful technique to keep the 8th pulse going. Thanks! *Favorite*

  • i got this technique.. show us something more advanced.. :D thanks.

  • wow how different does it sound when the camera alternates angels from top to bottom

  • wow THE MONSTER KIT!!

  • great video!

  • you are a multi-co-ordinated machine dude

  • he has so many fucking pedals down there under that monster of a drum set lmfao how it would take a while to realize which one is which

  • why does he have the second bass drum if hes got a double bass pedal. o well who cares he rules

  • They are different sizes - different sounds.

  • may be too for estetic purposes

  • ..and different tuned..

  • or possibley for more mounted toms?

  • Getting another bassdrum for more toms would be stupid, there's lots of freestanding racks out there ;p

  • i agree with you because if you look at the second bass drum there isn't another pedal connected so maybe for cosmetics maybe?

  • That end beat was badass.

  • work hard - play your drums, and you'll get it, later! well said derek, that sentence goes a thousand miles.

  • i met derrek in halifax nova scotia he came to buckleys music center i got his autograph:D

  • hes a freakin metronome

  • best way to describe it haha.

  • but this was not the heel toe technique

  • his coordination is amazing!

  • iv tried shoes up, toes between chain and everything, its just not happening for me guys! help anyone?

  • like the video says, it's all about balance. balance comes from your core (your stomach), so when you're practicing make sure you're sitting up straight, stretch your stomach out as far as you can (if you notice a lot of great drummers look like they're leaning backward when they're really getting into it), then coordinate the foot movement. it's very strenuous at first, so start slow, but soon you'll stretch and strengthen your core enough so it can support your feet.

  • I dont know if thats completely true man. I know I can stay perfectly ballanced even if I'm slouching. I think it's more about your feet. if your hitting directly under you, it's going to set you off. if your hitting foreward it's going to keep you more ballanced. sure a strong core would help, but it's not the be all end all by any means

  • Tried shoes off?

  • thats like 2 grands worth of pedal there! nice. yet another good video on heel toe, but i still cant do it, iv been playing around 3 or 4 years and iv got my grade 7 in a few weeks and there is a piece where heel toe would really help, 'ca tourne' if anyone knows it? theres a semi q double followed by quaver then semi again, so i reckon Hell toe would be grae5t for that. but i just cant get my foot around it. iv got a mid range mapex pedal, which has served me pretty well until recently.

  • a lot of heel toe players use axis pedals, but are they really that good? i was looking into buying a longboard axis pedal from my friend

  • are longboards the best choice for heel toe users?

  • They are.

  • hmm..when buying pedals, are there different kinds of sizes?

  • Not usually. But the longboards and a few other custom models from other brands sometimes have longboards, shortboards, etc that you can choose from. Axis are great pedals, though.

  • Ya, if you like pedals to fall apart on you in a week... The aluminum they use is meant for aircrafts not high tension usage. Trick V-1 Pro Bigfoot pedals are made much better. I use DW 5000 by the way, great pedals.

  • I've had my AL-2 for a year and a half now and they havn't fallen apart. I don't play heel toe either and I love them.

  • - HATE ETERNAL -

  • your a good drummer!!!!!!!!!

  • lulz XD

This isn't me. But hey, thanks!

  • Thrash metal, death metal, heavy crash bash metal, what ever it,s called is certainly not my preferred music but I did get some very helpful tips from this young chap, his other videos on building up speed with hands and feet are also excellent.Something i don,t understand though is(i may be showing my age)why is the production on cd,s so awash with the guitars, and the drums and bass don,t seem to have any oomph or as they say today, balls???

  • That's probably just the result of Erik Rutan's production. I definitely agree with you though, I would have loved for his drumming to come out more.

  • good advice rodd

  • Can anyone tell one thing? If he has 2 bass drums, why does he uses an double bass drum pedal? He could remove de lef bass drum and play only with the double pedal.

  • His mic broke. Also, in his newer setups, he has 2 different sized bass drums, so he set up double pedals for one, and one bass drum pedal for the smaller one.

  • most drummers use it as a tom holder or for show becuz its a pain in the ass to tune both bass drums exactly the same.

  • I actually thought that, for this instance, he preffered to use mics for the bass drum rather than triggers. So in that case, it sounds beter just coming from one bassdrum, because you can't tune the bassdrums the exact same. And if he started playing death metal stuff, i thought he would just put the beater back in the left pedal. So yea.

  • 2:48 he hits the the single bass pedal lol

  • been looking for this kind of lesson for some days...finally found it :)

  • thanks for all ur lesson!

  • ok cool,so hs the guy they had brought in after pete hurt his shoulder to finish out recording then. sweet

  • im not fuckin retarded i no what u said. and yeha lots of drummers use a double kick on 2 bass drumns.and how in the fuck wouldu no whether or not if i drum

  • he's only using a double kick on 1 bass drum because his trigger got messed up or something like that on his other pedal so he fixed it after the video

  • yeah.. my drummer put a hole in the skin of the left bass drum so hes using a double kick now

  • this says derek roddy was in nile. when?

  • He played additional drums for the Black Seeds Of Vengeance album.

  • hey c4sp3r91, you're just jealous coz roddy is better than you. stop ur whining you fag! better watch the vid and shut up!

  • gay hair soft clipper...sound like for girlz

  • what a poser :P :D why does he have 2 bass drums when he's got double pedal ???

  • because one of his triggers wasnt working right or something like that. so instead of tinkering with it, he just put on a double pedal so he could do the vid. then after the vid he fixed the problem

  • I don't know about poser, but he owns pretty much all stuff that an metal drummer needs.. Like Axis pedals: He just doesn't have double pedals... he has A & X double pedals, then both in Longboard and single A & X etc... All kind of stuff. I guess he just likes to show off, how much he gets for an living doing gigs all days long :P

  • c4sp3r91 r u fucked tons of drummers use to bass drums. ur the fuckin poser

  • omg u noob... dont really want to flame you becuase you really didnt understand me .. probably because you aren't drummer

  • tell em badasfuck77! i use 2 bass drums, and have always used em! hate fouble pedals. my legs are 2 wide in my comfort zone as i call it 4 me 2 play, and bass drums help me get comfortable

  • Yeah, when you use a double pedal it muffles the resonance of the drum where as two drums you get the full tone of each. I just wish I could afford a second one.

  • Fucking derek is a fucking good master on drumers!!!

  • Do you sit on the edge of the stool? or is your butt completely relaxed on the stool? I'm sorry, this might be a stupid question, but I can't really figure out the sitting position which is best for me.

  • what does the two other axis pedals to the right of the hi-hat pedal used for?

  • Nice hair.

  • Hey all. No1 in here can sit and say roddy's shit! He's a sic drummer, I was into Joey Jordison to start with, but since finding roddy, I find there's not many drummers out there who can match roddy, for either speed or technique. The blokes awesome, anyone denying it is a jealous SOAB!

  • check out george kollias. he took the drummer spot for Nile after roddy left. he has some awsome vids on here.

  • what about billy cobham? roddy can't touch him

  • hmmmmm.. makes you wonder, i think roddy has speed over cobham but still..

  • how is the snare drum a tom if it sounds like a snare?
