First I try to play a song in the key of "C", then I transpose to other keys. C is the easiest key for me. You have a course for people learning to play by ear. How do I get started.
I'm glad you noticed that...scales practiced in its proper form is boring. As you see I play around the scale, still learning the sound of the notes, the fingering and having fun at the same time ;)
I cover the C major scale in this video..the idea here is to show how you can make playing scales fun. Most musicians can't play scales because it bores them..I make it fun with different inversions of the scale
Hey, I was able to immitate what you played. but my issue is the application on other scales/melodies. I have been using only simple triads for 10yrs now, I still cannot exhaust diminished and aug. chords. What do you advise?
how many songs do you know? I use chords and progressions from any music I've heard and learned for the past 37 years and not all gospel. When you know the melody then you can add the dinished and augmentment chords in support of the melody line. it takes time but is learnable
i'm a decent ish player and i've started writing my own songs, but how do chords relate to scales? Say i'm writing in F major what chords can I play that won't sound out of place, is there some sort of rule about what chords go with which keys? Like if I was playing in A, where the A chord is made from A C# E, does that mean that those 3 chords will sound good together, or doesn't it work like that. I've got my head round chords and scales, but chord progression is something new
i'm with gregmoney07...this was good...but its hard to follow as a beginner without the notes spelled out.....i have hard time with following it by ear.
When you are learning to play by "ear" you listen first then watch. I never learned to play piano but always wanted to play music and tried to duplicate what I heard

At 0:33 he plays harmonic C minor scale.
It's a C scale too, but you've got that right: it's not a "C major scale". ;)

Great concept once you open your mind to it.
We have to challenge ourselves to go to the next level,
even if this takes you 4 hours to learn it, DO IT!
Your videos and a couple of others have made me realize
that we get in our own way of learning. "It's in your hand"
I am saying that it will be easy, Lord knows its not for me.
Yet I have the desire and passion and that is a start.
Peace and Blessings my Brothers and Sisters
