you people are nasty. why would u kill it for fun? IT"S A LIVING CREATURE JUST LIKE U!!!!!! don't get me wrong, i could kill it if i needed to for food(without a gun) but it is unfair how the bullet is one million times faster than the deer compared to me running vs the deer. and if ur going to be a pussy and shoot it shoot it in the head so it dies fast instead of it limping/running away go die with great pain. just saying.

@Fireworxs2012 I purchased KaBar U.S.N. for my newest knife. It is great and I will put a convex edge on it when I have time and use it for deer dressing. Thanks.
You were correct in your criticism of 1095. It is not blade steel, was never intended to be. Unfortunately many commercial knife producers use it because of it's low cost. A2 is an ok choice, but it can be difficult to sharpen and as time goes on it will become more difficult to sharpen as it self hardens. (the A stands for "air hardening")...If your not afraid of carbon steel I would highly recommend you keep your eyes open for O1, W1, W2, & WHC steel. For stainless ATS-34, or 154-cm..enjoy
@Fireworxs2012 I neglected to include the most venerable of all blade steel, L6...L6 is the only modern blade steel actually designed as a cutting steel. Everything, and I mean everything else was initially designed as something else first. 1095, 5160 are spring steels, O1, Ats-34 & 154-cm were initially designed as bearing steel. 400 series stainless was orginally designed for the meat processing & cooking industry. Only L6 is/was designed to cut first and formost. Water hardening steels.cont
@Fireworxs2012 Water hardening steels are designed as machining parts, ie. files, dies, swages, stamps and so on...Same thing with your S-series shock steel like D2, A2, s-6, & s-7. All of the Crucible aka (*Crux steels*) are off shoots and modified versions of 154-cm....None of them were initially designed to cut and lack the ferrite crystaline structure that is formed during the heat treating process. They have goodwear resistance, so people think they make good knives...They are wrong...
Interesting video. I found the cultural differences intriguing. Not using the entire animal put me off a bit, but that goes on over here (USA) as well and I am not one to critisize.
As far as the knife choices go, as a custom knifemaker with over 30 years and several thousand knives under my belt... I can share this. You will be hard pressed to find a commercial blade that can rival custom steel, at any price... I was surprised that in the land of ATS-34 it was not among blade choices..cont
Wako that's a pretty cool vid. My knives have improved greatly in sharpness. What u say about the mainland hunters pretty much fits me. Your english is very good in text format. That was an interesting read. Do you give the meat you cannot eat away since you can't sell it? It would be a shame if all of that was wasted. Great videos though.
Needless to say i returned my bark river 1 knife today. I asked for the Rampless Black Matte G10 handle instead. I just don't trust how a multicolored wood will turn out so I think I'll stick with a synthetic handle.
@Lightmaster11 I understand how you feel now. Sometimes their handles are disappointing. I have ever experienced similar cases a couple of times. Then I sold them off in the domestic auction. So my current handles are all good. Thanks.
I received my bark river1 yesterday and what a disaster. I asked for a black and white ebony handle to be mostly black with white highlights. I got mostly white with some black highlights. To make it worse it actually had six small holes in the wood! I think bugs or some kind of parasite ate it, I don't know. I asked for brass pins I got steel pins. I asked for black sheath, I got brown sheath and without fire steel attachment. They told me the new sheaths don't come with fire steel attachment.
After you've said "A couple of days ago some guy insulted me" with all those knives in front of you I thought you would say "I don't know which one of this knives I'm going to use against him" LOL
Excellent writeup in the video description. I think that should be part of all your videos so people stop posting silly comments about how "you're doing it wrong". :)
Hi, Wako: I'm very sorry that you were insulted. When videos get a lot of hits, as yours do, it is inevitable that some trolls will visit to play their game. A troll's hobby is to insult people and try to get them as upset as possible. That's why it's important to simply ignore them. They only feel important when they are successful in hurting and/or engaging their victims. They are not worth a second of your time, so never give them the satisfaction of knowing that they upset you.
To clarify some terms-- "Shot choices" refers to the moment that you chose to shoot your rifle. "Shooting deer in a barrel" refers to an old term when fish were stored densely in barrels. If you shot at a barrel of fish, you were sure to get at least one. He was suggesting that the deer were caged in (like fish in a barrel) so that any shot would kill a deer. You and I know that what the troll said is not true. But truth is never the objective of a troll.
I hope none of my comments have offended you. I meant them all as hunter to hunter, brother to brother, in the brotherhood of those who enjoy the outdoors and hunting. We can always learn from each other and help each other with constructive criticism. Thank you for your time and effort on all your videos. All of us are more knowledgeable because of your videos and I think we all just want to put in our 2cents to try to repay you with some knowledge we have gleaned along the way.

Great video. I see you keep returning to the Bravo 1.
The Blackjack(imo) is purely a hunting knife. I have never held it or worked with it, but the round handle doesn't seem to provide much traction. However it is a beautiful knife.
Sadly there are people like the on the internet, and in real life. However some of them won't say anything in public but on the internet they believe that they can say what they want without any consequences. And i agree that these people should be ignored, because i believe that by giving them attention you only increase the chances of this person insulting you or someone else again.
don't be offended by what people say. some people say things they themselves don't understand. great video! very interesting....keep making videos we all enjoy :D
Hello Wako, as your videos grow in popularity and reach, the chance of someone trying to insult you is likely to increase. Probably it is wise to let some comments just slide, but I am sure you have thought of this. Just one more thing: an insult, even when intended as an insult, is in the eye of the beholder. If you refuse to be insulted, the insulter will have failed.
Your video's are great. Please show us more on the rampless Bravo-I, since one is on its way to me now. Thank you.
I know you are leaning towards a .308 winchester but I think you should also consider less recoil and flatter trajectory of the 6.5X55mm. I think it would serve you well in this type of topography and with this size of deer. The 140 grain bullets will go deep from any angle and you wont have to wait for broadside shots. Something for you to discuss among your friends at the hunting campfire over saki and deer stew. Thanks for the vids.
I think most hunters hate bad shots and wounded deer and people taking "hail mary " shots because it shows a lack of focus and professionalism. . .it would be like making a samauri sword out of cast iron pot metal and have it break in battle and have the bladesmith say "I dont care". We should all strive for professionalism and becoming expert in all our endeavors including hunting.
please don't pay attention to the haters and trolls. Anyone that says your not a hunter, hasn't got a clue what they are talking about. keep on truckin'
Great Review Virtuovice! Love those Bark Rivers also. The country you are hunting in is beautiful....almost looks groomed. Enjoyed your hunting and knife vids...keep em coming! Have fun hunting!
I suggest to all new viewers to view all Virtuovice's past videos and comments. Most of the answers that are being asked were already posted i.e. what do you do for living? How many deers you shoot a season? What do you do with the meat etc.
True hunter indeed.......i still have to find another hunter who gets 50~70 deers a season despite the gun limitations. Wait til he gets his hand on a real hunting rifle 2 years from now. We will start seeing One Shot 2 Kills =)
Because of you I bought the following knives Bark River 1 (custom), Izula 2, and a K-bar. Thanks for the videos. I enjoy them very much. Still waiting for my Bark River to arrive. I have been waiting for over 3 months now. My handle on the bark River is Black and white ebony wood, rampless. Sound familiar?
As I right this I have many deer in my front and backyard. In the past 3 years we have a new subdivision across the street from me. The deer population is going to be a big problem. I suspect somebody will hit one with there car soon and maybe die. Two people have hit a deer so far this year but, no deaths yet. I had a close call myself. We need hunters here. Unfortunately, you can only kill them with a cross bow as my farm is surrounded by new subdivision.
I hunt whitetail deer, on the ground and with a recurve bow. It's about the hardest hunting you can do. That said, your hunts are about as challenging as gun hunting gets, IMO. Your mandated weapon caliber and smooth bore greatly increase difficulty. If you were allowed to use a .270, you'd be picking off deer at 300 plus yards, no problem. So, ignore insults. Keep the videos coming!
Sometimes I wonder where some of these laws come from. You would think a bi pod is no big deal. Just like here the bayonet lug was outlawed. I guess they thought if you had one you would go around bayoneting people? Like you said " it is what it is".
Wako is the most honest and realistic person I've found on youtube; he is who he is and never pretends to be something he is not. This helps to make everything clear as day. Thanks wako!
I think the term "harvest" came to be used in conjunction with hunting because of its use in wildlife management. As in: "The authorities have permitted the harvesting of 1,000 deer in Area X." Over time some people began to use "harvest" as a synonym for hunting.
I don't know the wording or context of the original comment so it might have been MEANT as an insult or not.
@sae1095hc I quote the original comment "that is not real deer hunting. it's shooting deer in a barrel. the shot choices were terrible and inexcusable", "yes, well my deer hunting is hunting, that is harvesting". Clearly he was distinguishing his hunting from our harvesting. It sounded insulting to me. But I was not able to understand what "the shot choices" meant very well. If it meant the choices of the video shots, I had no videos other than them unfortunately. Thanks.
I liked reading your composition. It is informative. Some people like to judge others before they educate and inform themselves . Every hunting ground has its own special nuances . You explained your hunting grounds very well to others who never been there and do not know. Thank you .
As a lifelong hunter, outdoorsman, and fisherman, I do have deep appreciation for the animals I hunt/harvest. For my family, we use the word "harvest", NOT as any insult, but to express to non-hunters that we are simply getting food, not some crazy bloodthirsty maniacs who just kill to be killing. You are 100% wonderful outdoorsman, and your love for the deer, and the woodlands is VERY clear.
I am happy you make your videos, PLEASE keep it up! Much respect to you my friend.
Very well said Wako san. You, as far as majority of your fans is concerned is a real deer hunter, a very thoughtful and generous friend to many. I am very fortunate and deeply honored to be one of the many. Looking forward to more of your hunting, knife reviews and cooking this season and for sharing part of your life with us.
"On the ethical question of whether it is right to kill a wild deer as against a domesticated cow, I will quote a Greenland Inuit, who responded to accusations from a southern "environmentalist" with the reply: "Our animals are wild and free up until the very moment of death. Yours are imprisoned from the time of birth, have no freedom, and come all crowded to death in terror. Which do you think is cruel?"
Because there is no threat from predators - the deers in Hokkaido is not as easily spooked that North American deers. In an earlier hunting video, the deer practically just stood there after 2 missed shots.
Great shot, what was the distance? I mean no disrespect, but i think dear in Japan are a bit easier to take compared to my experience. As you moved through the dry leaves as you set up for your shot, that would have been the end of your hunt here.
@havoc6g They are not used to being shot by hunters. There are lots of deer and few hunters. The distance was at first 200 yards from the camera. But it walked closer to me called by my whistle. And at last it came to 100 yards. I was looking into the scope and I didn't measure the distance actually. I was not able to take a whistle and called it with my voice but it didn't react and stop to my voice. Thanks.
Good shot placement. You are a hunter. With all the prone shooting you do have you considered mounting a bipod to your slug gun? I use them and find them very useful if I need to stay prone for very long. What is the handle material of your bravo 1? It looks great.
Hi Virtuouvice. I have several questions; What other animals are available for hunting in Japan? Have you ever hunted any of those? I also know that Japanese gun law is very strict, how long did it take you to acquire your rifle and were there any special circumstances on it? (such as you are only permitted to own one if you are a certified hunter, etc) Thank you very much.
@Mortaxe We hunt boar on the other islands than Hokkaido. We have brown bear here. Before rifle we must use shot guns for 10 years regardless of the quality of our experiences. We must take interviews from an officer and a psychiatrist and a visit of an officer checking how we keep our guns and ammo annually. When I leave a gun visible in my car for shopping on the way for hunting and an officer find it, my gun license will be taken away. So I always keep the bolt in the pouch on my belt.
@hypehype1982 It is Winchester M70 rifle. The barrel is changed to custom made .410 caliber smooth bore for slug ammo according to Japanese gun control law. Its magazine doesn't take my hand loaded cartridge but its chamber takes it. I use 42 grain IMR 4227 powder in a fitting metal shell and 200 grain copper bullet.
@ngraudal Thank you! That Bambi is a decent vermin and gives me tasty meat and beautiful natural key chain hanger, and of course joy of hunting. I don't shoot a girl Bambi knowingly and when I did it by accident I regretted it.
great vid i enjoy your longer vids a lot more.. if i could ask for one thing i would enjoy watching a vid about the hunt itself a bit more .. like perhaps the time wile tracking and getting close and how you find the dears .. but very good vid i enjoy them a lot thank you
@Fudoh1 Yes Hokkaido where he lives has a terrible overpopulation of deer. Even with all the hunting the population is still on the increase rather than the decrease. Deer unchecked can and do breed like rabbits. Eventually they will begin to starve themselves out and that is a sight I have seen and it is not pretty, they can suffer for weeks before they finally die. They can destroy a farmers field literally overnight.
WOOT! First dislike =)

Saw this article - you decide.....

As you moved through the dry leaves as you set up for your shot, that would have been the end of your hunt here.
havoc6g 4 months ago
@havoc6g They are not used to being shot by hunters. There are lots of deer and few hunters. The distance was at first 200 yards from the camera. But it walked closer to me called by my whistle. And at last it came to 100 yards. I was looking into the scope and I didn't measure the distance actually. I was not able to take a whistle and called it with my voice but it didn't react and stop to my voice. Thanks.

@havoc6g Maybe around 100 yards. It was the opening day in northern areas. So it was rather easy than usual. Thanks.

Good shot placement. You are a hunter. With all the prone shooting you do have you considered mounting a bipod to your slug gun? I use them and find them very useful if I need to stay prone for very long. What is the handle material of your bravo 1? It looks great.
mccullenj 4 months ago
@mccullenj The bipod for guns is banned here. My Bravo1 has an aged bamboo handle. Thanks.

Mortaxe 4 months ago
@Mortaxe We hunt boar on the other islands than Hokkaido. We have brown bear here. Before rifle we must use shot guns for 10 years regardless of the quality of our experiences. We must take interviews from an officer and a psychiatrist and a visit of an officer checking how we keep our guns and ammo annually. When I leave a gun visible in my car for shopping on the way for hunting and an officer find it, my gun license will be taken away. So I always keep the bolt in the pouch on my belt.
virtuovice 4 months ago
What kind of gun is that and what cartridge does it take?
hypehype1982 4 months ago
@hypehype1982 It is Winchester M70 rifle. The barrel is changed to custom made .410 caliber smooth bore for slug ammo according to Japanese gun control law. Its magazine doesn't take my hand loaded cartridge but its chamber takes it. I use 42 grain IMR 4227 powder in a fitting metal shell and 200 grain copper bullet.

I enjoy watching your videos very much.
A lot of people think meat comes from the supermarket and that "Bambi" can't be vermin.
I hope you have a good season with lots of stags, knives and videos.
ngraudal 4 months ago
@ngraudal Thank you! That Bambi is a decent vermin and gives me tasty meat and beautiful natural key chain hanger, and of course joy of hunting. I don't shoot a girl Bambi knowingly and when I did it by accident I regretted it.

I wonder how much hunting that guy has done? Does he have lots of videos? He might but I bet not.
Nebulax123 4 months ago
@Nebulax123
he has 237 videos and kills dozens of deer per season.
Fudoh1 4 months ago
@Fudoh1 Yes Hokkaido where he lives has a terrible overpopulation of deer. Even with all the hunting the population is still on the increase rather than the decrease. Deer unchecked can and do breed like rabbits. Eventually they will begin to starve themselves out and that is a sight I have seen and it is not pretty, they can suffer for weeks before they finally die. They can destroy a farmers field literally overnight.

@Nebulax123
So what is your problem Sir?
God bless

@Fudoh1 Me I am fine! Thanks and God Bless you also that is much better than what a lot of the younger generation says on here.
