First time I ever heard this was about 20 years ago at a biker friend's funeral, have loved this song ever since. I was told the song is about bikers or a biker, who regularly fly too close to the ground.

Willie has always had a talent for what I call 'organic' words and music. He sees and knows how things are and how they feel, and can make that into his songs. An unapologetic, unself conscious approach to telling beautiful stories in his songs. Bless you Willie, thanks.

too close, (not "to close") the title should read. Not like there is a fissure in the ground that the angel is trying to close with angelic powers, prusumably to stop hell spawn and demons and such from infecting earth with pestulence and plauges and being rude when you ask them why. That almost makes more sense really, more so than an angel just crashing and burning and getting a old long haired dude to cheer you up and get the fever down, probably with antibiotics due to bacterial infection :)
