Absolutely wonderful, and I have yet to see another violinist that plays at such a strange place over the fingerboard. I'll have to try that myself sometime :) I will say though, that at times the echo effect seems detrimental to the listener's ability to hear all of the multiple voices. For example, Midori Goto, Hilary Han, or Gidon Kremer's performances tend to be easier to pick out more of the subtleties.
Although I am awestruck by the sheer transcendental quality of the perfect execution of this monstrously difficult piece, the sad thing is mostly only string players will really understand the real difficulty level of the piece. Next to this video, I see a link to Yanni's "The Storm", which has over 6 million views compared to this video's 50,000. People there are commenting how cool that video is, although that is completely CHICKEN SHIT to what is achieved here. Oh well, popular culture...
i can't believe all those sounds (voices) are coming from one instrument at the same time. it sounds like atleast 5 or more violins. I'm engrossed by this amazing godlike demonstration of skill.
Still the best version of this piece on YouTube IMHO. His manner of holding the violin reminds me strongly of Leonidas Kavakos, who also holds his violin sloping downward with the left elbow very close to the torso. Both are amazing violinists!
wow there's so much impossible things he does in those variations, but the most special one is for me the double-stops hormonics!!! its so hard to get the precision for one, but 2 at the same time... thats god-like XD
absolutely the worst version of this etude ive ever heard (or seen). he has every bit of capacity to play it the way it was written, and ernst is turning over in his freaking grave
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Is there a reason he's playing on the fingerboard half the time? That is just bad technique. I like the bite on the chords, but for me that is just too much attack. It should be a sweet, sad song about the death of summer. I'd love to hear this without the echo and see how opinions change. Go listen to Hilary Hahn's version!
he is trying to make a folkish effect with the fingerboard -- as another commenter has said before, it is in the score. this is one of the most interesting performances ive heard of this piece. i think much better than hahn and perhaps ricci too...
I understand if it's in the score, but his bow isn't going in a straight line and it just looks sloppy. I guess I am just not a fan of the technique. I disagree that it's better than Hahn. Hahn plays with perfect intonation.
im not a ............ but this VIRTUOSO in my opinion is play ERNST, Heinrich Wilhelm excelent and i try to pay this poliphonique studie on my cello like him in intepretation manner
well this piece looks very difficult, but is actually not so hard as it looks.some of paganini caprices are harder than that.but it is right, this guy plays it very good,he has a very good staccato though...it is advertised that this ernst piece is the most difficult piece on violin, this is just not true.
pretty awesome technique, pretty good interpretation, but it's too bad for the acoustics. Haven't seen or heard much of this piece but I can tell you, as ambitious as I may get as a violinist, this work is not going to be on my "list" for awhile.
this guy is great and i love his version if the song but if he held his bow up more he'd probobly song a lot less squeky and more legato, uless thats what he wanted it to sound like that...overall pretty good though!
this guy is great and i love his version if the song but if he held his bow up more he'd probobly song a lot less squeky and more legato, uless thats what he wanted it to sound like that...overall pretty good though!
yea, i dont like this at all. the acoustics of the hall just ruin the fast passages. his playing is great though, but there is a lot left to the imagination because you simply cannot hear what hes playing
Best recording of this piece is by Juliette Kang... just in case you were looking, and it sounds (in my opinion) quite a bit better with her interpretation.
se llama "sul tasto". mi amiga ha tocado esto. creo que sólo la ultima variacion es muy difícil, pero cuando se mira, se parece que todo es difícilisimo.
it's just to create the soft whispering sound, I think it's lovely I've never seen someone play that low down the fingerboard (you did mean the fingerboard not the bridge right?)
Is there really a specific way to play any piece? No, unless its Mozart or Bach(excluding the sonatas and partitas). Really it has to do with the musician's interpretation
Ricci's version is the best. Midori and Kremer recorded it. Midori is next one in my opinion. Who says the 5.05'' var. to be ridiculous? I´ll say 2 things: 1) He doesn´t know much about violin music or he doesn´t like it. 2) He doesn´t know about composing either. There are variations not as good as that one indeed. The piece is very difficult and v. nice, but not a masterpiece. It's fantastic with a great player, but not the best for violin. This guy doesn't do his best clearly.
When i am reading yor comments i see than not all of you have some contact with violin. Many people says that is most dificult song for violins, so i have big respect for this man. I know that echo of this hall is not good, but you must look on technique of this guy. big rspect. I dream for hear this song live. Sorry for poor English
Midori's famous recording of this piece was from her Carnegie Hall debut when she was 15. So yea, it is live, and its perfection is scarry. No editing or "pitch" fixing there...
this is a wet hall - he should have taken the performance slower because some fast passages sound very sloppy though in a good hall, it probably wouldn't have
I've been listenin to Midori's version on cd ... her's is warmer .... this is flashier .... this violinist has nice hands and knows how ti use them .... .
The acoustics in the hall are pretty awful, poor judgement on his part. However, he brings out the notes of the melody very nicely from the accompaniment, and they resonate nicely in the hall. This may be why he chose to record there.
eh...this isnt that great of performance of this piece.this piece is unbelievably difficult for violin. unfortunatly this violinist does not compensate for the acoustics of the hall. its simply too fast for the hall...everything fast sounds like mush and hes rather out of tune. kudos though...at least he CAN play it
That's a good point about the international fame of the Last Rose but these are virtuoso variations on the theme, noone expects them to be simple do they! :p it's a virtuoso piece, it's just supposed to amaze and who can deny it doesn't? And I don't think anyone pottering around on YouTube (like me!) has any right to call Mr Boulier's efforts bulls***, come on guys..
Wilhelm Ernst is not a composer that is deserving of "respect", necessarily. If you can even go so far as to say the Last Rose has international fame, it's only because it's so freakin' hard to play well. I agree that he's unpleasantly mannered in his playing, but this is only an etude anyway.
Virtuoso. Very good mastery of the instrument. Performance. Rich sound. However what made the international fame of "Last Rose is its simplicity and pureness. Its candeur and genuineness. And they are all absent in this video. This video is "original" not in the meaning of "conform to the origins" but in the meaning of "Trying desperately to be different". Such a good violonist could do wonders if he had respect for the composer. Sorry...

Hoooly mother. I've tried reading through this twice before and always gave up midway through the first variation. Subtract the reverb, and he could join the ranks of the few people to record this piece.
Other than technical acrobatics, the piece has no redeeming qualities at all, so few have cared enough to play it, and much less record it. Its not popular.
