  • what for an amazing work! and that peace is so difficult and awesome!

  • This title is a part of bonuses of this DVD " Les 24 Caprices de Paganini " available on the web page of christophe-boulier

Thank you for having indicated it!

  • Absolutely wonderful, and I have yet to see another violinist that plays at such a strange place over the fingerboard. I'll have to try that myself sometime :) I will say though, that at times the echo effect seems detrimental to the listener's ability to hear all of the multiple voices. For example, Midori Goto, Hilary Han, or Gidon Kremer's performances tend to be easier to pick out more of the subtleties.

  • Holy shit. And it's not even like I don't know the piece...

  • Although I am awestruck by the sheer transcendental quality of the perfect execution of this monstrously difficult piece, the sad thing is mostly only string players will really understand the real difficulty level of the piece. Next to this video, I see a link to Yanni's "The Storm", which has over 6 million views compared to this video's 50,000. People there are commenting how cool that video is, although that is completely CHICKEN SHIT to what is achieved here. Oh well, popular culture...

  • i can't believe all those sounds (voices) are coming from one instrument at the same time. it sounds like atleast 5 or more violins. I'm engrossed by this amazing godlike demonstration of skill.

  • Freaking amazing

  • Still the best version of this piece on YouTube IMHO. His manner of holding the violin reminds me strongly of Leonidas Kavakos, who also holds his violin sloping downward with the left elbow very close to the torso. Both are amazing violinists!

  • wow there's so much impossible things he does in those variations, but the most special one is for me the double-stops hormonics!!! its so hard to get the precision for one, but 2 at the same time... thats god-like XD

  • Wonder how he would stack up against N

Paganini? Hahn plays this a lot more straight, but she misses a plunk.

  • He plays below the boundary of the bridge and the fingerboard.... How??

  • he's so gud

  • Wow.

These videos attract people that leave weird ass comments.

  • nice, but SO much echo!!

  • When I play it I can not play this variation 05.05 because I've problem in my hand but I suggest you listen my playing. You played it fantactic.

  • Divino:::))))

  • genial thx

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • holy moly goly joly....

  • In spite of the echo chamber effect this is still the most virtuosic rendition of this piece I've heard yet, IMHO.

  • Sounds like a lovely composition...but I can't really tell because of the reverb.

  • This is one of the best examples of violin pyrotechnics that I've ever witnessed.

  • 대단합니다.....이말외엔 안떠오르는...

  • amazing!!!!

  • From Ernst..Paganini's rival. The acoustics are not the best but a very capable violinist--the echo throws things off just a bit. A difficult piece!

  • the part of left hand pizzicato-arpeggios, harmonics-arpeggios is amazing

  • middle part is like "God save the King" things...

  • Technique?

  • I like it...

the acustic sucks though, but the violinist seems to have an unique view of the piece.

  • absolutely the worst version of this etude ive ever heard (or seen). he has every bit of capacity to play it the way it was written, and ernst is turning over in his freaking grave

  • I'm sorry... I must have missed your recording of this piece... Don't criticize what you can't play yourself.

  • he is trying to make a folkish effect with the fingerboard -- as another commenter has said before, it is in the score. this is one of the most interesting performances ive heard of this piece. i think much better than hahn and perhaps ricci too...

  • Probably the best version is Midori or the Greek guy who's name skips my mind. This is so out of tune it is crazy.

  • I agree!

  • Kavakos

  • is there a version of kavakos playing this on youtube?

    i can't find it!

  • I understand if it's in the score, but his bow isn't going in a straight line and it just looks sloppy. I guess I am just not a fan of the technique. I disagree that it's better than Hahn. Hahn plays with perfect intonation.

  • its too fast ... he should play slower because the eco

  • play not pay

  • im not a ............ but this VIRTUOSO in my opinion is play ERNST, Heinrich Wilhelm excelent and i try to pay this poliphonique studie on my cello like him in intepretation manner

  • Sorry but this is fucking abysmal

  • I hear that babe!

  • oh i love this sul tasto :)))))

    sounds like a panflute :)))))

  • well this piece looks very difficult, but is actually not so hard as it looks.some of paganini caprices are harder than that.but it is right, this guy plays it very good,he has a very good staccato though...it is advertised that this ernst piece is the most difficult piece on violin, this is just not true.

  • not to take away from this performance but go watch hahn play this!

  • pretty awesome technique, pretty good interpretation, but it's too bad for the acoustics. Haven't seen or heard much of this piece but I can tell you, as ambitious as I may get as a violinist, this work is not going to be on my "list" for awhile.

  • Merci, pour toutes vos roses. Elles sont toutes très rares.

  • this guy is great and i love his version if the song but if he held his bow up more he'd probobly song a lot less squeky and more legato, uless thats what he wanted it to sound like that...overall pretty good though!

  • this guy is great and i love his version if the song but if he held his bow up more he'd probobly song a lot less squeky and more legato, uless thats what he wanted it to sound like that...overall pretty good though!

  • yea, i dont like this at all. the acoustics of the hall just ruin the fast passages. his playing is great though, but there is a lot left to the imagination because you simply cannot hear what hes playing

  • Best recording of this piece is by Juliette Kang... just in case you were looking, and it sounds (in my opinion) quite a bit better with her interpretation.

  • He is a great player... but STOP playing 10 ft over the fingerboard!! LOL

  • it's in the music

  • It's good! but if he had played a little bit less fast should be better!!

  • Great strong left hand pizz.

Too bad that the reverb is so strong that it doesn't sound as clear as it would have.

  • great...

  • Great! See also Kristof Barati's approach!

  • great, now play the last rose of summer. by the way don't give up your day job.

  • wait...is he supposed to play halfway over the bridge?

  • That variation is meant to be played there

  • it's just to create the soft whispering sound, I think it's lovely I've never seen someone play that low down the fingerboard (you did mean the fingerboard not the bridge right?)

  • i think he's playing in a church, for those questioning reverb.

  • this isn't how it's supposed to be played..

  • Is there really a specific way to play any piece? No, unless its Mozart or Bach(excluding the sonatas and partitas). Really it has to do with the musician's interpretation

  • This guy is an excellent violinist though I could have done without the echo chamber effect.

  • Ricci's version is the best. Midori and Kremer recorded it. Midori is next one in my opinion. Who says the 5.05'' var. to be ridiculous? I´ll say 2 things: 1) He doesn´t know much about violin music or he doesn´t like it. 2) He doesn´t know about composing either. There are variations not as good as that one indeed. The piece is very difficult and v. nice, but not a masterpiece. It's fantastic with a great player, but not the best for violin. This guy doesn't do his best clearly.

  • Did Heifetz record this piece?

  • i believe this technique must be very advanced, but i don't like violins. so it's the instuments fault :D

i still think that he's an amazing musician

  • wow.. see how he plays on the finger board and makes it sound like pipes... amazing

  • what's with the reverb?

  • When i am reading yor comments i see than not all of you have some contact with violin. Many people says that is most dificult song for violins, so i have big respect for this man. I know that echo of this hall is not good, but you must look on technique of this guy. big rspect. I dream for hear this song live. Sorry for poor English

  • es muy dificil esta obra y me gusta como la interpreta, pero esa forma soberbia de tomar el violin es fome

  • >lolmanerik: how can you say that it's bad? The theme is wonderful.

And what are you guys saying about variations? The first is starting at 1.34. If you don't hear that, you're not musicians.

I cannot believe that someone says that the variation at 5.05 is ridiculous! It's so amazing, so unbelievable, so magic!! It's the best variation!

Sorry, I cannot English. I try to do my best

  • i think he meant ridiculousy difficult!

  • soooo bad. whats this

  • Midori's famous recording of this piece was from her Carnegie Hall debut when she was 15. So yea, it is live, and its perfection is scarry. No editing or "pitch" fixing there...

  • He is perfect. Makes it looks so effortless.

  • this is a wet hall - he should have taken the performance slower because some fast passages sound very sloppy though in a good hall, it probably wouldn't have

  • this i agree with...

  • sounds sloppy because of the hall, echo

  • that's what i said =]

  • lol, sorry i read too fast.

  • I've been listenin to Midori's version on cd ... her's is warmer .... this is flashier .... this violinist has nice hands and knows how ti use them .... .

  • I am sorry to inform you strad, but as I heard, she uses lots of "pitch" and "tone fixers" - studio effects..

    Was it LIVE performance?

  • I believe so .. I gotta take a look at your Frank zappa favorite ...

  • The acoustics in the hall are pretty awful, poor judgement on his part. However, he brings out the notes of the melody very nicely from the accompaniment, and they resonate nicely in the hall. This may be why he chose to record there.

  • eh...this isnt that great of performance of this piece.this piece is unbelievably difficult for violin. unfortunatly this violinist does not compensate for the acoustics of the hall. its simply too fast for the hall...everything fast sounds like mush and hes rather out of tune. kudos though...at least he CAN play it

  • A true violin genius!

That's a good point about the international fame of the Last Rose but these are virtuoso variations on the theme, noone expects them to be simple do they! :p it's a virtuoso piece, it's just supposed to amaze and who can deny it doesn't? And I don't think anyone pottering around on YouTube (like me!) has any right to call Mr Boulier's efforts bulls***, come on guys..

Thanks very much for the video!

  • Wilhelm Ernst is not a composer that is deserving of "respect", necessarily. If you can even go so far as to say the Last Rose has international fame, it's only because it's so freakin' hard to play well. I agree that he's unpleasantly mannered in his playing, but this is only an etude anyway.

  • Virtuoso. Very good mastery of the instrument. Performance. Rich sound. However what made the international fame of "Last Rose is its simplicity and pureness. Its candeur and genuineness. And they are all absent in this video. This video is "original" not in the meaning of "conform to the origins" but in the meaning of "Trying desperately to be different". Such a good violonist could do wonders if he had respect for the composer. Sorry...

  • its not perfetct technically. but this man is a master. if u go to his site u can listen to him bein able to play saint saens no.3 at nine like many professionals would only dream about. now this piece is impossible to play perfectly.

  • Not impressive. :\

  • wow that was so good!

i could see his hair moving... if you know what i mean

  • yeah, Turban recording is very good, not my favourite. But, still, it is very good.

  • i play both this and nel cor...

but this is pure bullshit, honestly. the truely good recordings of this piece are, in the order of my preferences: Kremer, Rabin, Ricci.

And, he's an adult, if he still wants to play violin, he shouldn't play this kind of pieces, at least, not like this!!! Please, spare our ears!

  • variations on an austrian hym is the hardest piece

  • listen to "god save the king" variations by paganini if u like this kinda tricky pieces

  • he makes a lot of mistakes though

  • according to MANY violinists... this is the HARDEST piece ever written for violin.

  • a piece at the same level of difficulty is paganinis nel cor piu non mi sento.

  • its harder IMO.

  • Ingolf Turban's recording is much better!!!

  • Good fun! That he can play Var.IV - amazing. What would it sound like without the reverb? And weird use of the bow in the statement of the theme, I have never seen bowing quiet like it before.

  • this piece isn't found in a single book like a concerto is it? its an etude, so does anyone know what book i could buy to find this piece?

  • This is the sixth piece from Ernst's Six Polyphonic Studies.

  • this is Ernst Heinrich "6 polyphonic etudes" book

  • hey there's a set of ernst etudes called "6 polyphonic etudes". the last rose is #6

  • holy freak........ now this is why i chose the viola, jeff! :p

  • technique is extremely good. Musically is extremely lacking

  • wow. go him. I could never play that.

  • *CRIES* that is amazingly...wow

  • Maybe I'm wrong but this is the hardest piece for the violin. I have the book of the 6 Polyphonic studies by H.W. Ersnt and I can only play 3 of the variations.

I know its a big effort for this violinist and he is great, but I just wanted to mention he did some mistakes in Var 3 and just 1 mistake in Var 2 and more than 8 mistakes in the finalle variation. Now u can see how hard is this piece. Then tell me how the hell Maxim Vengerov played this piece having only 15 years old? O_o damn!

  • Because maxim vengerov is jesus on steriods when he plays violin...

  • wow! i dont think i could ever be that good!

  • Hoooly mother. I've tried reading through this twice before and always gave up midway through the first variation. Subtract the reverb, and he could join the ranks of the few people to record this piece.

  • to be precise I read there's only 8 in the whole world that ever recorded this extremelly hard piece composed by Heinrich Wilhelm Ersnt

  • For different reason than you're implying though.

Other than technical acrobatics, the piece has no redeeming qualities at all, so few have cared enough to play it, and much less record it. Its not popular.

Who could listen to it, and enjoy it?? Its not aesthetically pleasing.

  • This musical piece comes from a folk melody called "the last rose from the summer". I bet you may think "Tzigane" by Ravel is not pleasing either... if its like that then try to learn more about music harmony and melodic constructions.

Its totally beautifull if its played preciselly. Listen to Maxim Vengerov's recording of this piece and you will see.

  • id love to hear that, do u have that recording?

  • yes I have that recording I bought it. Do you have some music scores or odd recordings too? we can trade ^_^
