Some here use the word cowardice like it's a bad thing! Fear will keep you alive, senseless attack won't, it is better to avoid conflict and reserve attack for defense.
you can beat a kusarigama you just have to change up your fighting style a bit. the samurai fought very statically with a lot of overhead strikes, notice where the chain catches the sword. you simply have to be less predictable. their is no best weapon, they were just meant to do different jobs.
very interesting. Nice video. In shiai i would have to assume the use of the chain could stun opponents before these 'complete waza' could be worked...
no it's not. Have you never been in combat before, that is a key rule of ninjutsu using the enviorment to you advantage. A change of scene can mean death if you don't do it. It's tactical.
cowardly? Ha! so fighting with an advantage is cowardly? so they are both cowards! How do you think people gain success? How do you think I win at poker!? You take advantage of whatever you can, or you fail! it's as simple as that.
I really liked the video, still it looks like the swordsman stands still on Dai Codan no kamae for a long time to let the kusari gama wrapp his hands with the cord. In reality it can be much more harder to do it when there is no pause between D.Codan and attack, but it is really nice to watch it as an art.
The kusarigama is a good weapon, but there are some flaws. You need a lot of room to use it, and forget handling multiple opponents at once. It's a stellar weapon when your handling a single foe on open ground, but it's ability falters when your in a heated battle. If you've ever read 'Musashi', by Yoshikawa Eiji, you'll see that that the legendary swordsman Musashi (still something of a novice at this point) deftly defeats a master of the kusarigama by fighting him in a bamboo forest.
that master of the kusarigama did not have to room to swing the chain around to entangle mushashis sword, mushashi had the upper hand in that battle!!!!becasue of the bamboo forest!
very good, may i ask where YOU got this infromation from?
Though it's hard to use this weapon, and even so if you need a lot of room to use it, one has to adapt to such environment. I believe one of Bruce Lee's principles was to adapt with your environment. Use what you have.
His "style without style" principle. He basically said to be successful in a fight you had to be like water, adapting to whatever container(environment)it is put in.
Shishido Baikan was the man Musashi killed. The historical account states that Musashi threw a knife from outside the chains reach to injure Baikan then moved in for the kill when the knife found it's mark. Araki Mataemon lured Yamada Shinryuken into a bamboo grove so I wonder if Yoshikawa was inspired by that account as it shows thought of terrain and opponents flaws.
You don't HAVE to use the chain... The kama is still a very effective weapon. I was taught to wrap a length of chain around one hand's knuckles and use hand techniques with one hand while utilizing the kama as... well... a normal kama.
Meh... Hell if I know. I'm still pretty scrubby anyway.
i wouldn't say you need that much space to use it. you can use the chain as a bludgeon if you just grab it shorter and make it a small flail sickle combo instead. or you can just throw the weight right out of your hand i doubt you'll need tons of room to just throw it.
As you can tell, this a demonstration. In real world situations at the time, the swordsman would've been distracted by a couple or two feints or attacks to the head. You should check out some Okinawa weapons forms as these basically the same types of implements.
Because that would show that kusarigama wouldn't actually work, and this video's purpose was to show that it does.
However for all intensive purpose's the swinging chain rarely ever disables the opponent, and despite this fact, the martial art from continues, mostly due to people unwilling to question traditional methods and forms despite their obvious flaws.
I agree with you. In the instance of an honourable duel the kusarigama would have been inefficient against a swordsmaster. It was better utilised by the ninja as a 'surprise' weapon. The art continues today most likely because it's comprised of two elements that are greatly effective in their individual use -the rope and the sickle- and perhaps for cultural exploration.
Well, actually, try that in reverse. Ninjas used kusarigama, while peasants used kama alone. Ashigaru rarely used anything other than the yari, the teppo, and the bow.

@Blazureokami Or you can whip at short range with the other end of the chain I suppose.

You are sooooo right about that "stand still" thing! I am not aware of that kind of martial arts but it's damn visible!
