devildogmetal, jazz is another world with different vocabularies, it's a matter of lot's of listening, trial and error to find your own voice, greets Vic.
Thanks bearlop, I once held such a guitar in hands fell in love but when I heard the price I put her back and bought this one,not a bad second choice (GB20 Ibanez, I love her). Thanks perothing, guess my strong motivation and love for Music kept me going, all the Stuff around the Music biz can go down the drain for me, friendly Vic.
I like this version! Liked the places where you played "outside" very tastefully and not overdone! Great tone. What guitar is this? What is your set-up?
Thanks Jazzcat67, some think the more outside the better but I think it has to be dosed in a tasteful way, like you said. This is a GB20 (george Benson Ibanez) taken out of production some years ago. I play straight into my little 4 channel soundcraft mixer where I can adjust my tone with eq,here it's mixed with the backingtrack and goes stereo into the PC. Vic.
Nice interpretation on the intro. Great tone. To my ear this is one of your best melodic improvs. Lots of tension that you resolve nicely. This goes in my Favs Your ending chord was a nice surprise.
Thanks Allen, glad you enjoyed, I was listening to Paul Desmond and I thought what a creative mind beautiful tone and superb timing,it really inspired me to work on this Classic which was a challenge to improvise in 5/4 meter, will visit you soon, hear what you've been doing lately, greets Vic.
Thanks Tempo, I use several sources, Jazz-play alongs from J.Aebersold(he has a Site) Sometimes I use Garageband that has good drumloops which I combine with instruments played by me and I also use Band in a box, which is very user-friendly,Vic.
You give us five, Vic, and we give you five in return ;-) That tune is not so easy as many people think, especially to keep the tension up during the two minor chords; and then that bridge... But you play through this with all that easyness we all love. And this is one single coherent flow from the first note to the last thrilling harmony (minor +5?)
Thanks Jogi, in essence it seems a simple tune till one discovers the great possibilities it offers. I always tell students: guys if you cant play something decent over 2 chords, never mind the rest. A matter of speaking of course, but playing in a 5/4 beat is also a study before it evolves into " intuitive-playing" which is the basis of improvisation. The last chord is a mi69 stacked in fourths. friendly Vic.
Thanks Jogi, yeah it takes lots of training to reach that level, all the work I'm doing for students has helped me a lot, some guys look up parts on Internet, but I always double check with my ears if everything is actually done adequate,I want to deliver quality for their money,Vic.

Hi Esko, wish I could shear but in this I'm a jazz-musician who has written nothing down, got the theme by listening to Paul Desmond and improvised all the rest, only the little beginning and ending is a "head-arrangement" so sorry, greets Vic.
Hi Gene, it's a process I can't really explain ,just that I figured out some random patterns that worked well in 5/4 just for me to get started from there I started jamming and suddenly started feeling more free, just jammed, and jammed, greets Vic.
Hi Vic! Always a pleasure to listen to you. Specially to this since it is part of my childhood. My older sister played this constantly when I was 7-10 years old. Yes, CONSTANTLY! I ended p hiding the record from her. I still have it!! Will put it on tonight. But yours are as good as the original!
Thanks Per, I think it's a marvelous story, I can imagine you reach the point that you get really irritated always hearing the same. For me the most challenging was improvising on the 5/4 beat, a lot of jamming did the job, greets Vic.

Thanks Alicia, you're right: the test of time, and that's a hard test I can tell you, only the goodies survive, it's a good composition and a challenge to improvise on the 5/4 groove, hug Vic.
Hi Vic, this is a not a easy tune to improvice and you nailed it brother. Is one of my favorite. Got a question and maybe I'm wrong, I thought Dave Brubeck was the author of this tune?
Thanks Edwin, you're right before you start feeling the 5/4 you got quite some jamming ahead but boy once you start feeling free,Heaven opens it's doors, lol, thanks brother till soon,Vic.
Lovely tune, well played Vic. I think You defiantly enjoyed playing it ;)
Takes me back to 1998 UK / Leeds City.
Me walking in the city at night listening to Take five on my walkman. Even though the atmosphere was very dull at night, but the music in my ears kept the city alive in my eyes.
Thanks Firas, well in the light of Music many dull things become bearable, without Music it really becomes dull, thanks for your thoughts, all the best, Vic.
Went to your channel today...Enjoyed many.. Please refresh your scores. I can't find the last one you sent... Still love the tune Anouk, I don't want to cry...Marvelous job..Put out one year ago today...
Thanks Paul, what do you mean by: Refresh my scores, you want me to send you a list what I've added,I'll do it right away, greets Vic. (PS Anouk is not scored yet, I first score the tunes most in demand).
Hi Vic - Another great tune! Got to love Take Five. Smooth. The GB-20 sounds great. Coincidentally, another guitarist I follow on YouTUbe, troubleclef, just posted a fingerstyle version of T5 the same day.
Thanks peleka, glad you enjoyed, yes I know Tony (good fingerstylist) we comment often on each others work, his version is different but very nice and creative,Vic.
Hey there Vic! :0) This is so wonderful my friend, what a great way to relax on a Friday evening by listening to your wonderful talent! 5 stars always from me! Hope this weekend has started well for you! Tamara xx
Thanks Tamara, hope all's well with you and your mum, enjoyed doing this one, a 5/4 tempo and 5 stars what else can I desire? Great you're always here listening my lady, hug Vic.
Just a quick comment Vic. Great vid as always and "hats off " to that. What I would really like to know is if in a quick 2 5 change, as in this tune and satin doll, do you prefer to base your phrasing on the 2 chord, if things are going fast, and resolve on the final 5 for altered tension?
this is difficult to explain in text but I think you will know where I am coming from, hope so at least.
hi vic pp like perfect playing really very nice and this guitar is damned good looking and sounding, thank god that i dont play this style because i had to think about buying such a guitar 5 big ************** and best wishes friedel
Great interpretation Victor . Your guitar sings because your soul sings . Enjoyed every moment of it . The intro is very moody , followed by theme and wonderful improvisation ! Masterfully done ! Musical greetings , Igor
Thanks Igor, that statement is totally correct when the Soul sings that's the basis for all that follows, the proper state of mind my friend, without that everything stops or is lost, greets Vic.
Thanks Ken, love communicating with guys like you who know their Stuff, like John Scoffield once said to me at a Guitar workshop in Amsterdam ,Vic you got great feel but learn the scales in all intervals (up to octaves). I'll tell you this experience I've put into practice and it pays off, greets Vic.
Very beautiful philosophy dear Vic, everything is done with love has great value to me, the true feelings fade today ... we should do everything with love !
If Paul Desmond this wonderful suits can hear sound now, he would certainly be very proud of on you play this great tune, indeed Wow. Thanks for share
Yo........Vic rockin da Howz! Great playin on a tune that should live 4 ever.......I wonder what's the thought process when you play? Are you paying attention to the chords as they are being played or are you following along some other way?....KEEPON STRUMMIN....DALLAS
Thanks Tototwice, yes indeed a great Standard. In this piece I tend to follow the "Tonal Centers" more than accentuating every chord, first part I think Eb Dorian(mainly) and the bridge Gb major, here and there I do accentuate chords, I like altered playing on Bb7 returning to Ebmi7. Greetings Vic.
One of my favourite tunes, the progger in me loves the 5/4. I had the great fortune of catching Dave Brubeck this summer at the Toronto Jazz Festival. While much of the technique is gone, he more than made up with some of the most emotional piano playing I have ever heard! Great Video Vic, I hope to become nearly half the jazzer you are!
Thanks yesOgensis, some years ago I heard Brubeck at the Northsea here in Rotterdam and his band was terrific, nothing could beat the feel and timing and why should one play hundred notes while the expression lies in 2. Miles was a Master at this.Greets Vic.
Hi Brother, this is one of my favorite standard tunes I use to play at a time on my Alt Sax but remember it wasn't easy to play and as you master it on your guitar. Boy what a sweet jazzy sound comes out of your guitar, well executed with many improvised moves I really enjoyed listening to, thumbs up and 5* it is. Greets, John (Willemstad)
Man we should play it together when I'm there in February would be fun. It remains a fine standard and playing in 5/4 indeed isn't easy, you really got to dig in the groove and feel it. Glad you enjoyed my version dear brother, always great welcoming you here, Vic. (till soon).
Thanks mein fraulein Sabine, for your passionate commenting, i must admit I could have played longer because I kept on hearing all these melodies in my mind. Before I played I was really inspired by Paul Desmond and his lyrical Ideas. hug Vic.
oh, yeah. wish you played at a little club down the street from me. your sound just welcomes people in off the cold streets and sets a warm drink in front of them.
Tony glad you dropped in and you enjoyed telling by your comment, man how I enjoyed your version played in Emi, here I did it in the Brubeck key Ebm7, ah what the heck both versions can see the light, lol, greets Amigo, Vic.
Vic, this is phenomenal, absolutely great. To play the melody, pah, that´s easy, but you add personality to it. And now to the solo: it´s typically for your style, great ideas, nice fingerings, little spicy slides....
To play that kinda free is worth living, isn´t it?!
And in the end you play like in the beginning, like a circle the thing is closed,, round, perfect!
Frank this is a fantastic comment from a very good musician, I was looking at P.Desmond here on the Tube and that guy blew me away with his solo, talkin about personality, what a musician. Then I thought Music is timeless and when I improvise I'm in a timeless state, this is what attracts me the most, that's why I don't give a damn if Music is a 1000 years old, quality will remain, thats why I look at the old Jazz Cats they weren't distracted by modern time consumerism just played their balls off.
@tkun16 Understandable, what you're seeing and hearing here are the fruits of a "Life in Music" first the mental training with the Book " Zen Guitar" Phillip Toshio Sudo, just to bring you in the proper Mind-Setting before you play a single Note.Prepare your mind for a proper journey,Vic.

Hi Vic, this is a not a easy tune to improvice and you nailed it brother. Is one of my favorite. Got a question and maybe I'm wrong, I thought Dave Brubeck was the author of this tune?
jazzyedwin24 2 years ago
It was written by Paul Desmond while he was with Dave Brubeck Quartet. What a great tune!

Keep it up my friend.

Jazzguts 2 years ago
Just a quick comment Vic. Great vid as always and "hats off " to that. What I would really like to know is if in a quick 2 5 change, as in this tune and satin doll, do you prefer to base your phrasing on the 2 chord, if things are going fast, and resolve on the final 5 for altered tension?
this is difficult to explain in text but I think you will know where I am coming from, hope so at least.
jimmyblackjazz 2 years ago
Hi jimmy, thanks, yes if the 5 chord resolves to a tonic (1 chord) than I mostly alter the 5 chord for tension before resolving, greets Vic.

Keesfarida 2 years ago

Great interpretation Victor . Your guitar sings because your soul sings . Enjoyed every moment of it . The intro is very moody , followed by theme and wonderful improvisation ! Masterfully done ! Musical greetings , Igor
Iggypres 2 years ago
Thanks Igor, that statement is totally correct when the Soul sings that's the basis for all that follows, the proper state of mind my friend, without that everything stops or is lost, greets Vic.

Yo........Vic rockin da Howz! Great playin on a tune that should live 4 ever.......I wonder what's the thought process when you play? Are you paying attention to the chords as they are being played or are you following along some other way?....KEEPON STRUMMIN....DALLAS
Tototwice 2 years ago

Jazzguts 2 years ago
Hi Brother, this is one of my favorite standard tunes I use to play at a time on my Alt Sax but remember it wasn't easy to play and as you master it on your guitar. Boy what a sweet jazzy sound comes out of your guitar, well executed with many improvised moves I really enjoyed listening to, thumbs up and 5* it is. Greets, John (Willemstad)
JAZZFLEX09 2 years ago
Man we should play it together when I'm there in February would be fun. It remains a fine standard and playing in 5/4 indeed isn't easy, you really got to dig in the groove and feel it. Glad you enjoyed my version dear brother, always great welcoming you here, Vic. (till soon).

Tony glad you dropped in and you enjoyed telling by your comment, man how I enjoyed your version played in Emi, here I did it in the Brubeck key Ebm7, ah what the heck both versions can see the light, lol, greets Amigo, Vic.
Jazzguts 2 years ago
Vic, this is phenomenal, absolutely great. To play the melody, pah, that´s easy, but you add personality to it. And now to the solo: it´s typically for your style, great ideas, nice fingerings, little spicy slides....
To play that kinda free is worth living, isn´t it?!
And in the end you play like in the beginning, like a circle the thing is closed,, round, perfect!
Frank
LONGWINDING 2 years ago
Frank this is a fantastic comment from a very good musician, I was looking at P.Desmond here on the Tube and that guy blew me away with his solo, talkin about personality, what a musician. Then I thought Music is timeless and when I improvise I'm in a timeless state, this is what attracts me the most, that's why I don't give a damn if Music is a 1000 years old, quality will remain, thats why I look at the old Jazz Cats they weren't distracted by modern time consumerism just played their balls off.
