  • @tkun16 Understandable, what you're seeing and hearing here are the fruits of a "Life in Music" first the mental training with the Book " Zen Guitar" Phillip Toshio Sudo, just to bring you in the proper Mind-Setting before you play a single Note.Prepare your mind for a proper journey,Vic.

  • Great job, Vic. One of my favourites.

    .....Robert

  • @guitarvapor Thanks man, playing in a 5/4 rhythm takes some getting used to but once you're in that groove there's no letting go,Vic.

  • I realy could take 5 under this music (improvisation)

    thanks mr.Vic

  • @malmsteen1995 Take 7 to let it sink in and digest, thanks a lot,Vic.

  • Possibly the best cover on youtube.

  • @MartinJohn90 Thank you for your up-lifting,positive comment,really appreciate it,Vic.

  • great job. one of my favorite songs to play on the sax.

  • This arrangement has a great jazz-blues, smooth jazz flavor. Great lines w/excellent phrasing. Thanks for sharing.

  • @jimi01us Thanks Jimi and it's also interesting playing in a 5/4 meter,all the best,Vic.

  • @Jazzguts You play the 5/4 meter like you own it. I've never tried this song. I'm thinking of covering your arrangement and and letting it evolve into my own. Your straight ahead jazz solo is smooooth.

  • Guitar sounds great. Great tone.

  • @MrJimdeb Thanks Sir,always welcome to my Music,Vic.

  • Nice piece, I have to admit I´m very jealous of your playing...:-)

Love watching and listening to this , very characteristic rhythm and the melody lines are so smooth, they get in the ear very fast... all the best! ~ Daniel

  • @acodaniel1 Thanks Daniel, I love your dedicated and involved comments, not everybody has this gift.I left a personal message on your profile, all the best.

  • Thanks for that nice interpretation, I like the way you play, it's smooth.

  • @SebSirois Thank you, I'm an improviser and play from the Soul and what I hear in my mind, improvisation is about individual expression, nothing else, cheers Vic.

  • Great interpretion !!!!

  • @etcurrie Thank you,glad you liked it,Vic.

  • bravo!!!

  • @Dvareckas Thanks Dave,hope all's well with you,Vic.

  • A friend of mine, one by the name of Robert Denman, who you also know, told me about this video of yours...I must say, great incorporation, fantastic tone, a weird measure a bit, but it gets into the ear so easily...

Love your playing, as always. All the best! ~ Daniel

  • Thanks Daniel, well it's 5/4 measure so one has to get used to that, also playing over the sequence. Thanks for checking it out always welcome,Vic.

  • Thanks for uploading this, just lovely. )))

  • Thanks tarnatalia, for your support,X'mas greetings Vic.

  • first time i heard this it was the Dave Brubeck quartet and have had an obsession with it ever since you did justice to them in my opinion thanks for sharing

  • Thanks coddlinghimmler I enjoyed doing this one very much, greets Vic.

  • BRAVO!!!! I remember this when I was in grade school, in those days, they paid attention to the "Arts" This great piece was done by 5 Cats it was beautiful, sadly, public schools in NY, hardly ever do these things anymore, more rap and crap with hip hop dancing not my kind of gig. I can still see in my mind, Bass, Sax, drums, guitar and trumpet. In the 60's these guys were smoking, then they would explain the piece. Loved your ending. I miss those days of yester years Peace be with you

    Hen

  • Thanks Henry, that's my bag too, I guess whit all this materialism going on it has a devastating influence on the "Arts" ,how many young kids are putting in some effort to learn an instrument, they rather do computer games. We can not change the hands of time but what we can do is show them our Art and if they don't grasp it, so be it. Not everything lies in our hands, X.mas greetings Vic.

  • Hi Victor,

Nice job on this jazz standard.

    ...Robert

  • Thanks Robert very welcome always,Vic.

  • This was great!

I hope that I will learn to play jazz one day.

  • hi trhnpc, Jazz is a great but difficult Art-form,you got to love it and really get into it, keep working at it and it will come,Vic.

  • I´m back Vic -

thanks for playing this nice lullaby for me :-)

    Good night

    Sab

  • Hi Sabine, I've missed you, where you on vacation,or taking a break from the Tube? I can imagine that, gladly played for you my lady, greetings Vic.

  • I love this song! Vic, that guitar is very very beautiful, so are the sounds coming from it! Great!

  • Thanks James, I bought it in the 80 ties, back then it was affordable now you got to rob a bank if you can find one,LOL, greets Vic.

  • hi Vic!got my new pc yesterday.trying to figure it out.nice to hear this beauty by the maestro!

  • Hi Fred, you got a new PC good for you man, hope it's a Mac with a built in Camera, just kidding man, I was missing you here already but glad you gave a nice comment, success with your PC,greets Vic.

  • Hi thanks,it's diminished whole tone, so you're close, I love using altered sounds to spice things up, friendly Vic.

  • perfect!!

  • Gracias Hector, tell me when you got Stuff on your channel, thanks for listening Amigo, Vic.

  • I love Jazz just haven't grasped the nitch for the jazzy licks! GREAT JOB!!!

  • devildogmetal, jazz is another world with different vocabularies, it's a matter of lot's of listening, trial and error to find your own voice, greets Vic.

  • That was a lovely version, The tone was fantastic and very reminiscent of the Gibson ES175.

Just wish my jazz playing had not been tainted so much by my blues playing.

  • Thanks bearlop, I once held such a guitar in hands fell in love but when I heard the price I put her back and bought this one,not a bad second choice (GB20 Ibanez, I love her). I love the Blues, still do but the Jazz world became a great challenge years ago, especially the (responsible) Freedom, greets Vic.

  • When i hear this i regret that i did not have guitarlessons and stopped playing in the 80-ties.

My favorite jazz tune and you play it so nice. thank you. groet

  • Thanks perothing, guess my strong motivation and love for Music kept me going, all the Stuff around the Music biz can go down the drain for me, friendly Vic.

  • I like this version! Liked the places where you played "outside" very tastefully and not overdone! Great tone. What guitar is this? What is your set-up?

  • Thanks Jazzcat67, some think the more outside the better but I think it has to be dosed in a tasteful way, like you said. This is a GB20 (george Benson Ibanez) taken out of production some years ago. I play straight into my little 4 channel soundcraft mixer where I can adjust my tone with eq,here it's mixed with the backingtrack and goes stereo into the PC. Vic.

  • nicenice. as always im liking the smooth tone and playing

  • Thanks bjazzer795,if you like it you're on the right channel, greetings Vic.

  • Aaaaaaahhh ! This is sensational. A superb work again, Victor. I'm a complete fan. Made me take my guitar and work on this song.

Thank you again for all your music.

  • Thanks Marseille5, gladly done and thanks for your supporting words, I'm very glad I could inspire you with your playing, greetings Vic.

  • Vic,

Nice interpretation on the intro. Great tone. To my ear this is one of your best melodic improvs. Lots of tension that you resolve nicely. This goes in my Favs Your ending chord was a nice surprise.

    Cheers,

    allen.

  • Thanks Allen, glad you enjoyed, I was listening to Paul Desmond and I thought what a creative mind beautiful tone and superb timing,it really inspired me to work on this Classic which was a challenge to improvise in 5/4 meter, will visit you soon, hear what you've been doing lately, greets Vic.

  • Vic, you are one of the all-time best musicians to Take 5 with, anytime, any day!! Hugs and HIGH 5's, ~Terry

  • Thanks Terry, for listening and really enjoyed playing this one for all you Music aficionados, saludos Vic.

  • Mr. Jazzguts......where do you get your backing tracks from?? If you make them, what software do you use??

Thanks!! Keep up the great work!!

  • Thanks Tempo, I use several sources, Jazz-play alongs from J.Aebersold(he has a Site) Sometimes I use Garageband that has good drumloops which I combine with instruments played by me and I also use Band in a box, which is very user-friendly,Vic.

  • Oh my god, I am just speechless! Such a tasteful rendition of an all-time favorite. This one goes straight into my favorites.

  • Thanks abhik I enjoyed myself very much doing this one and so to see all you guys too, greets Vic.

  • Makes my day every day since you put it on.

  • Thanks for the great compliment TheMrForster, gladly done, greets Vic.

  • You give us five, Vic, and we give you five in return ;-) That tune is not so easy as many people think, especially to keep the tension up during the two minor chords; and then that bridge... But you play through this with all that easyness we all love. And this is one single coherent flow from the first note to the last thrilling harmony (minor +5?)

  • Thanks Jogi, in essence it seems a simple tune till one discovers the great possibilities it offers. I always tell students: guys if you cant play something decent over 2 chords, never mind the rest. A matter of speaking of course, but playing in a 5/4 beat is also a study before it evolves into " intuitive-playing" which is the basis of improvisation. The last chord is a mi69 stacked in fourths. friendly Vic.

  • Quite true! Minor6/9... okay. I think in about ten million years my ears will be able to actually HEAR chords ;-)

    Keep it cumin'!!!

PS: 1:21 to 1:23 - hot, hot, hot

  • Thanks Jogi, yeah it takes lots of training to reach that level, all the work I'm doing for students has helped me a lot, some guys look up parts on Internet, but I always double check with my ears if everything is actually done adequate,I want to deliver quality for their money,Vic.

  • I love your arrangement of Take 5 Vic. ***** Nadine

  • Thanks Nadine always welcome to my channel,Vic.

  • Hey Incredible as always! Thanks!

  • Thanks renowireless for tuning in,Vic.

  • You are definitely

    a guitarist in this life.

    CHEERS!

  • Thanks Buchoass, I was kinda kidding, but I must say that often horn players inspire me more than guitarists, hope I wont be lynched for this comment,LOL,greets Vic.

  • Very very nice! Wish I could get your arrangement for this (to learn from).

If you ever decide to sell your arrangements, please let me know.

    Cheers, Esko

  • Hi Esko, wish I could shear but in this I'm a jazz-musician who has written nothing down, got the theme by listening to Paul Desmond and improvised all the rest, only the little beginning and ending is a "head-arrangement" so sorry, greets Vic.

  • Hey Vic,

    great stuff as always,

i wish you you would share some of your ideas on this tune asfar as soloing and how you go about timing out a solo in 5/4?

    keep the vids coming!

    Gene

  • Hi Gene, it's a process I can't really explain ,just that I figured out some random patterns that worked well in 5/4 just for me to get started from there I started jamming and suddenly started feeling more free, just jammed, and jammed, greets Vic.

  • Hi Vic! Always a pleasure to listen to you. Specially to this since it is part of my childhood. My older sister played this constantly when I was 7-10 years old. Yes, CONSTANTLY! I ended p hiding the record from her. I still have it!! Will put it on tonight. But yours are as good as the original!

    Sweet sound!

    Saludos Amigo!

    Per

  • Thanks Per, I think it's a marvelous story, I can imagine you reach the point that you get really irritated always hearing the same. For me the most challenging was improvising on the 5/4 beat, a lot of jamming did the job, greets Vic.

  • Beautiful Song and excellent guitar player!!!!! Thanks for your videos Vic!!!!

  • javibasseden, always welcome my friend, glad you liked it, greetings Vic.

  • Hey Vic,

love this piece and your interpretation is just great... As always you rock :-D

Have a nice sunday and a hug Sarah :-)

  • Thanks Sarah,in this case I think its: always you "Jazz",LOL, but sometimes I finger-pick then I Blues or Rock, aah whatever it's Music and that's the main thing, big hug for my girl,Vic.

  • Love that tune! Love your rendition! Love your Canada shirt! ;)

  • Hi JazzC.. guess you're from Canada too? Glad you enjoyed,Vic.

  • Vancouver, BC, to be precise.

  • One of the great songs that stand the test of time. Very nice playing, Vic. It's always a pleasure.

  • Thanks Alicia, you're right: the test of time, and that's a hard test I can tell you, only the goodies survive, it's a good composition and a challenge to improvise on the 5/4 groove, hug Vic.

  • Spectacular! Very good flow - simply awesome.

  • thanks rohamvids, that's what I'm after man,a natural flow and you only get that by, sitting, tuning, and playing every day, greets Vic.

  • Hi Vic, this is a not a easy tune to improvice and you nailed it brother. Is one of my favorite. Got a question and maybe I'm wrong, I thought Dave Brubeck was the author of this tune?

  • It was written by Paul Desmond while he was with Dave Brubeck Quartet. What a great tune!

  • Right on roham,you know your Stuff,P.Desmond,incredible player,great inspiration,I listen to horn-players,Vic.

  • Thanks Edwin, you're right before you start feeling the 5/4 you got quite some jamming ahead but boy once you start feeling free,Heaven opens it's doors, lol, thanks brother till soon,Vic.

  • sounds great.

  • Thanks Amar very welcome,Vic.

  • very very nice

  • Thanks klipto, gr Vic.

  • Great playing Vic it's always a pleasure to listen tou your nice performances 5*****

    Claude

  • Thanks Claude, glad you enjoyed my impro on 5/4 beat, greets Vic.

  • Lovely tune, well played Vic. I think You defiantly enjoyed playing it ;)

Takes me back to 1998 UK / Leeds City.

Me walking in the city at night listening to Take five on my walkman. Even though the atmosphere was very dull at night, but the music in my ears kept the city alive in my eyes.

    Keep it up my friend.

    Firas Balushi.

  • Thanks Firas, well in the light of Music many dull things become bearable, without Music it really becomes dull, thanks for your thoughts, all the best, Vic.

  • Hey Man...Another great one...Hadn't seen anything new from you, but this takes the cake..Great Job Victor...You Rock !!!

    Maybe in the next incarnation...LOL

    PB (((((((@))========%%%

  • Thanks Paul, keep track of what I'm doing I've got quite some new Vids out, now rush to my channel Amigo, you got some up-dating to do,greets Vic.

  • Went to your channel today...Enjoyed many.. Please refresh your scores. I can't find the last one you sent... Still love the tune Anouk, I don't want to cry...Marvelous job..Put out one year ago today...

  • Thanks Paul, what do you mean by: Refresh my scores, you want me to send you a list what I've added,I'll do it right away, greets Vic. (PS Anouk is not scored yet, I first score the tunes most in demand).

  • Great !! As usually Victor

  • Thanks Labruja always welcome man,Vic.

  • Hi Vic - Another great tune! Got to love Take Five. Smooth. The GB-20 sounds great. Coincidentally, another guitarist I follow on YouTUbe, troubleclef, just posted a fingerstyle version of T5 the same day.

    Peace

  • Thanks peleka, glad you enjoyed, yes I know Tony (good fingerstylist) we comment often on each others work, his version is different but very nice and creative,Vic.

  • Great arrangement!

  • Thanks Oscar Peterson, how is it in Jazz Heaven? Hopefully I'll get there some day so I can Jam with the greats. lol, greets Vic.

  • Well, I'm just a guy who loves jazz, but I'm sure he is jammin with Count, Duke, Fats and Art!!!

  • Thanks Oscar,I'm sure he's doing that preparing himself for his new Incarnation, lol, greets Vic.

  • Pure as fresh fallen snow...thank you Vic!*****

  • Thanks larosity, for your enthusiasm, greets Vic.

  • Great !

  • Thanks tololo,Vic.

  • Hey there Vic! :0) This is so wonderful my friend, what a great way to relax on a Friday evening by listening to your wonderful talent! 5 stars always from me! Hope this weekend has started well for you! Tamara xx

  • Thanks Tamara, hope all's well with you and your mum, enjoyed doing this one, a 5/4 tempo and 5 stars what else can I desire? Great you're always here listening my lady, hug Vic.

  • Hi Vic. Great rendition with smooth sound! Bravo! cheers - Janick 5* :o)

  • Thanks Janick glad you enjoyed and all the best,Vic.

  • Sounds great Victor!

  • Thanks Steve for listening, always welcome, greets Vic.

  • Always beautiful playing here.

  • Thanks Paul, I try to keep up the good standard, greets Vic.

  • Just a quick comment Vic. Great vid as always and "hats off " to that. What I would really like to know is if in a quick 2 5 change, as in this tune and satin doll, do you prefer to base your phrasing on the 2 chord, if things are going fast, and resolve on the final 5 for altered tension?

this is difficult to explain in text but I think you will know where I am coming from, hope so at least.

  • Hi jimmy, thanks, yes if the 5 chord resolves to a tonic (1 chord) than I mostly alter the 5 chord for tension before resolving, greets Vic.

  • Gotta love the sound of a major 13 chord ending a tune!

  • Right on yesOgenesis, especially with the 9 also added, Ebmi69,very nice,Vic.

  • I loved it; Vic. Great Jazz-tone.

    Martin

  • Thanks Martin, man when I got my tone I'm totally inspired, thanks for listening, Vic.

  • hi vic pp like perfect playing really very nice and this guitar is damned good looking and sounding, thank god that i dont play this style because i had to think about buying such a guitar 5 big ************** and best wishes friedel

  • What a great sound! Very good job

  • Thanks Tuvia, time to drink my wine now, nice dry and cold, greets Vic.

  • Great interpretation Victor . Your guitar sings because your soul sings . Enjoyed every moment of it . The intro is very moody , followed by theme and wonderful improvisation ! Masterfully done ! Musical greetings , Igor

  • Thanks Igor, that statement is totally correct when the Soul sings that's the basis for all that follows, the proper state of mind my friend, without that everything stops or is lost, greets Vic.

  • Vic That was hot !!

Hey !! I really enjoyed hearing playing those Interval jumps and skips.. adds to the flow don't you think ???

  • Thanks Ken, love communicating with guys like you who know their Stuff, like John Scoffield once said to me at a Guitar workshop in Amsterdam ,Vic you got great feel but learn the scales in all intervals (up to octaves). I'll tell you this experience I've put into practice and it pays off, greets Vic.

  • Hello Vic, thank you to share your great interpretation of the classic Jazz, your arrangement is excellent!

    5 stars *****

All the best for you, Rosy

  • Thanks so much Rosy for favoring my interpretation, my philosophy: All that's played with love will be received as such, hug,Vic.

  • Very beautiful philosophy dear Vic, everything is done with love has great value to me, the true feelings fade today ... we should do everything with love !

  • If Paul Desmond this wonderful suits can hear sound now, he would certainly be very proud of on you play this great tune, indeed Wow. Thanks for share

    Cheers

    William

  • Thanks William, for always being here and finding supportive words to make me happy, thank you so much, groeten Vic.

  • Yo........Vic rockin da Howz! Great playin on a tune that should live 4 ever.......I wonder what's the thought process when you play? Are you paying attention to the chords as they are being played or are you following along some other way?....KEEPON STRUMMIN....DALLAS

  • Thanks Tototwice, yes indeed a great Standard. In this piece I tend to follow the "Tonal Centers" more than accentuating every chord, first part I think Eb Dorian(mainly) and the bridge Gb major, here and there I do accentuate chords, I like altered playing on Bb7 returning to Ebmi7. Greetings Vic.

  • wow

is just all i can say

    rip it up man

  • Thanks Axxstrix, gladly done and remember to practice every day, greets Vic.

  • One of my favourite tunes, the progger in me loves the 5/4. I had the great fortune of catching Dave Brubeck this summer at the Toronto Jazz Festival. While much of the technique is gone, he more than made up with some of the most emotional piano playing I have ever heard! Great Video Vic, I hope to become nearly half the jazzer you are!

  • Take more than five...***********

    Excellent and smooth playing...

    Lovely:-)

  • Thanks Rineke, glad you enjoyed and also for always checking me out, much appreciated, greetings Vic.

  • Thanks yesOgensis, some years ago I heard Brubeck at the Northsea here in Rotterdam and his band was terrific, nothing could beat the feel and timing and why should one play hundred notes while the expression lies in 2. Miles was a Master at this.Greets Vic.

  • Hi Brother, this is one of my favorite standard tunes I use to play at a time on my Alt Sax but remember it wasn't easy to play and as you master it on your guitar. Boy what a sweet jazzy sound comes out of your guitar, well executed with many improvised moves I really enjoyed listening to, thumbs up and 5* it is. Greets, John (Willemstad)

  • Man we should play it together when I'm there in February would be fun. It remains a fine standard and playing in 5/4 indeed isn't easy, you really got to dig in the groove and feel it. Glad you enjoyed my version dear brother, always great welcoming you here, Vic. (till soon).

  • soooo cool!

    another great video!

  • Thanks trhnpc glad you liked it,greets Vic.

  • loved it! and my god.. your guitar (mostley you though!) sounds goddamn sweet, what a sound!!!

  • Thanks Gillesva51, I love a nice puntchy,bass-like sound that inspires me to play,glad you enjoyed,Vic.

  • Good Afternoon Victor.

Five for Take Five. Oryginal interpretacion.

    Bravo Victor.

    Artur

  • Thanks Artur thanks for the 5er and glad you liked my interpretation of this fine Standard, hope all's well with you,Vic.

  • Give 5 :-) That was great - this piece sounds soo smooth - it could never end! I enjoy that you always play your own version of well-known pieces.

Good night Vic - Sab gives 5 (stars:)

  • Thanks mein fraulein Sabine, for your passionate commenting, i must admit I could have played longer because I kept on hearing all these melodies in my mind. Before I played I was really inspired by Paul Desmond and his lyrical Ideas. hug Vic.

  • oh, yeah. wish you played at a little club down the street from me. your sound just welcomes people in off the cold streets and sets a warm drink in front of them.

  • Tony glad you dropped in and you enjoyed telling by your comment, man how I enjoyed your version played in Emi, here I did it in the Brubeck key Ebm7, ah what the heck both versions can see the light, lol, greets Amigo, Vic.

  • Vic, this is phenomenal, absolutely great. To play the melody, pah, that´s easy, but you add personality to it. And now to the solo: it´s typically for your style, great ideas, nice fingerings, little spicy slides....

To play that kinda free is worth living, isn´t it?!

And in the end you play like in the beginning, like a circle the thing is closed,, round, perfect!

    Frank

  • Frank this is a fantastic comment from a very good musician, I was looking at P.Desmond here on the Tube and that guy blew me away with his solo, talkin about personality, what a musician. Then I thought Music is timeless and when I improvise I'm in a timeless state, this is what attracts me the most, that's why I don't give a damn if Music is a 1000 years old, quality will remain, thats why I look at the old Jazz Cats they weren't distracted by modern time consumerism just played their balls off.

  • YEAA !

  • Thanks Vini that's what I call enthusiasm,sounds like a concert,lol,Vic.

  • Fantastic job, Vic. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks Turkamine,always welcome,thanks for being here and listening,Vic.

  • Your Amazing Vic That's For Sure :)) 5/5 Beautiful Guitar Vic Lovely Pickin.

    Patricia.

  • Thanks Patricia, always enjoy playing for all you music-lovers out there, always welcome,Vic.

  • Awesome! Love this track in every form!

  • Thanks keithmurray, indeed a great track to improvise over especially the 5/4 groove, greets Vic.
