Some tips for getting off the lift:

About 90% of the time ppl stand up too soon. Don't stand up as soon as you can. It's best to stand up just before the slope down. If everyone did this and got off the lift at the same time I bet there would be 95% less ppl falling so soon.

Also, don't try to turn.. go straight, or angle slightly, and stop (esp snowboarders). Then move to the side.

Getting on and off a chair lift with a snowboard could not be more awkward, especially if you're a beginner, and the lift is packed. On my first snowboarding holiday I got on a lift with 5 other skiers (the maximum), it didn't exactly go smoothly.
