Scientists gain authority the more explanatory power heir theories appear to have. There's nothing wrong with believing the word of the best scientists when they say the Earth goes round the sun or that evolution is true. You have no choice, in fact.
I agree. Supposing he said something to the effect, I recognize the soundness of the arguments made by those making the truth claim. Jonathan Miller is a very bright man, I expected better from him.
@Serpent257 I see your point, but I think he meant trust based on credible authority - thus if a dentist tells me I need a tooth out then I would believe him/her because it is a credible authority in the sense that I know he/she has seen many people's teeth and therefore has a good idea about good or bad teeth.
@Serpent257 He isnt an astronomer himself and hasnt personally proved that the earth goes round the sun, nor was he the person who discovered the fossil record, but scientists have and they keep each other in check, they're peer reviewed. If you were a layperson it would be essential to simply believe them, however if you doubted them you could do a degree in physics/geology etc and then think of a way to check for yourself.
An interestng and superficial examination of superstition and religion in very general terms together with Charlie Chaplan's own opinion of the matter. Not recommended as a serious foundation for those seeking truth.
Is there a supernatural God?..Of course notbut is the energy behind life and behind our universe a natural creative energy...? I believe the evolutionary process of natural selection are also guided by a natural energy of our cosmos....how about mathematical proof?
i was chating to miller on saturday about a fellow called eadweard muybridge. Jonathan showed me 10 shots in a picture of muybridge running stark naked! Muybridge was the first man to capture the human body moving! miller is the most interesting man i have ever met without a shadow of a doubt
