@ElCynical it's a paradox game so graphics and animation are crap, but strategy and depth are the best we will see in a long time, see the reviews. this is like a total war game without battles, but with a 10X better campaign

@Foneio, I got Victoria II and haven't really enjoyed it much. It seems like the only things really in-depth are the military conquests. Enemy AI is excellent from what I've seen, but it seems pretty much identical to risk.
I've only played it a few hours, but at the moment I do regret it somewhat.
@Crabbensmasher All 3. EU might be the simplest, but thats because it focuses on a LONG time period. Vicky 2 has the most indepth politics, diplomacy and economy (some retards say too indepth), while the HoI series focuses on warfare the most. HoI 3 has far more micro-management than 2, though. Personally, I much prefer the depth of 3, but 2 is still an excellent game. Hope this helps a little.

A few questions about the game. Is it possible to use a fleet to bombard a coastal region? And how do you release a puppet nation, or free yourself if you are a puppet? Because I'm the SU and I don't want Mongolia any more. I want to annex it directly. And lastly, in the production menu, when I build a plane, is it like one single airplane or an entire squadron? Because in WW2 each side had like 1000 planes while I have no more that ten.
@uja11 This is a late answer but i'll try to answer those. you bombard coasts just by putting ships next to the province (aids you in a battle), you cannot annex a puppet (from what i've heard), and each plane you build represents a sqadron.

No for the fact that it ues 'ticks' - a tick is an hour in the game.
means a day has 24 ticks, a month has 30/31 days, and a year 365 days.
you can accelerate up to making a day go past in about 2 seconds - that's good when you don't have too much going on. But not that good when too much happens ;)
One thing people need to know is that you need to buy the expansion to make the game work. Paradox made the fixes that the game needed but it didnt publish it as a patch, instead they sold it as an expansion called Semper Fi.

First, open up the game but only the main menu, then simply open up you HoI 3 file in windows explorer and look for saved games (make shure you saved your game). Once you found it open up your Hungary file with notepad and then type in search ''human=yes''. Scroll a bit down from that and you will find your manpower. Mine was 30.000 and I changed it to 9999.000. Ima gonna have an latvian empire.
@uja11 it does help I will look at it when I get a chance and anyways Romania took me over but was nice enough to make me a puppet so now im a democracy :)
@uja11 once im a puppet the economy is terrible but recovers slowly over time. I can't declare war with anyone and join the fraction i want. I think the only way to get out of being a puppet is to wait for a country to take over you and liberate you unless Romania decides to liberate me but I really don't know how to do that

In my computer the new 1.4 patch is better but the damn slownes sucks .

In 1936, 1938 and 40 All Nations have shitty industry. The game is way too easy when you start as Germany. The AI is still much inferior then human tactics. @46Ussr Yes. All you do is to play around with the MAP. And trust me, it's a lot more challenging and nail-biting than anything "Total War" ever threw at me.

Yeah, if you leave the AI alone and just chill with your nation, for some random reason say, China actually invades Japan, or the Czechs take over the Baltic Nations and gives Germany a hell of a fight. HOI2 is a bit more structured with the AI, which in my opinion makes it a better game, but that's my opinion, I love historically accurate WW2 games.
ok i have this game and the game is awesome, if u are a fan of WW2 ur gona came with this game and is epic to use hitler!! 1- i want to know how can u see the soldiers and 2- can u change the course of history? like germany controlling the world? that would be awesome! and if is possible to invade UK cause i try with more than 500k + soldiers and it was freaking impossible!
try to take out UKs Fleet with some strong CV (usually have 6 in 1939 and 4 BB). Use some heavy Bomber too (Ok CAS and tac bombers do fine, i have 2 squads of strat bombers too)
Then get about 20 to 30 transport ships and go in Scotland or somwhere far north of london.
That way UK defeating is possible and not too hard ;)
Except the Hearts of Iron, do you know very good and above all very complete tactical wargames (and not STR like Warcraft or even mix games like the Total war)?

I like these complex strategy games, but this game is terrible.
The tutorial is completely useless and tells you 20% of what you want to know.
There is tons of options and features and finding your way around them is a fucking puzzle. You get no help whatsoever, you are supposed to either know how everything works from the beginning or sit for several hours trying to figure it out.
@Roughstylez this isn't only a "strategy" game. it's also a "grand strategy" because it includes, science, politics, diplomacy, etc, not just the military. but it still lets you control war doen to a regimental level which deems it a "strategy" game too. but it is by no means a "tactical" game, as you well said, because you do not actually direct battles.
@Roughstylez Personally for Me Real Time Stratergy Games are my Favourite Games of all time. But I love Both games like Hearts of Iron and the Tactical Gameplay you get on Games like Command and Conquer.
@Roughstylez HOI and Paradox are known for some of the best simulations of actual war as it was. Maybe a smaller scale tactical element would be fun for some of the more 'meth-head mega-click' generation (which I am also a member), but this game is for the cerebral. If you've read Operation Barbarossa (or any book about WWII), this is the game for you.
I've played EU3 HTTT with up to 8 people, that one with 8 was over two days.
Best ever! After 20 hours of playing I can tell you that players are as close to the real thing as it gets. Speed of game remains low and constant, you plan every attack and def, every unit movement to its smallest detail, simply because you can and you have to. It's no longer a game, you become the protector of a nation you've built up.
im just reading some of the comments and im blown away. there is TONS of stuff you can do in this game!!! i actually dont find enough time to do it, some of you need to explore the game a bit more. Otherwise, set the damn timer to extremely fast (as i have already stated in another comment). Go and launch a fucking campain against a small neighbouring country. Who cares if others attack you? its much easier to defend rather than to attack anyway. There is so much more i can talk about...........
The game starts in 1936, that is the earliest and you cant start in 1940 either. And if you could do that a division just takes like 9-10 months to make if you have at full production. In reality a division takes that long to make them trained!
This game takes forever to get anything done. I started research for something on January 1 1936 and it was finished December 22 1936. of course I put the time movement to 5x fast forwards, but the game goes by hours! HOURS!? so I went to production. I put some buildings and units in production. I started, same date, and would have infantry ready around December too! SO, I went and did some laundry, homework, and ran some errands in town. When I got back it was October! FUCK! great details tho

I love this game! I play as Sweden in my current game :) germany started WWII and attacked France,Poland and Greece, but no1 is helping GB XD
and im sitting there very nervous that i may be attacked although i can reach Berlin im not joining the allies unless D-day or soviets join the war :/

I was britain and in my game Japan was making a full offensive in India after destroying nationalist china....They didnt have ANY troops in France until after they liberated Paris.....WTF?! :D

Yeah, if you leave the AI alone and just chill with your nation, for some random reason say, China actually invades Japan, or the Czechs take over the Baltic Nations and gives Germany a hell of a fight. HOI2 is a bit more structured with the AI, which in my opinion makes it a better game, but that's my opinion, I love historically accurate WW2 games.

ok i have this game and the game is awesome, if u are a fan of WW2 ur gona came with this game and is epic to use hitler!! 1- i want to know how can u see the soldiers and 2- can u change the course of history? like germany controlling the world? that would be awesome! and if is possible to invade UK cause i try with more than 500k + soldiers and it was freaking impossible!

it's not...
try to take out UKs Fleet with some strong CV (usually have 6 in 1939 and 4 BB). Use some heavy Bomber too (Ok CAS and tac bombers do fine, i have 2 squads of strat bombers too)
Then get about 20 to 30 transport ships and go in Scotland or somwhere far north of london.
That way UK defeating is possible and not too hard ;)

And of course, try to sink the enemies fleet before you do any attempt to invade UK.
means 1 or 2 months of just cruising in front of london and southcoast of GB.
i sunk 2 BB in the east sea, while i was invading poland that time (funny to say UK and the allys declared war on my germany ^^)
and when you thinned out the UKs fleet enough, go to north england/scotland and finish it.
that way it's possible and not too difficult

I guess main problem is that most users are used to "strategic" games like AoE or CnC which rather should be called "tactic games".
Well, Hoi is a real strategic game.
It's kind of like your the Head of the State,
so the military part comes down to
"moving miniatures on a map",
this way setting up frontlines etc
while the bigger part is politics stuff.
You should have minor interest in ww2 history and a faible for "Finetuning" too.
Want to build barracks and train single soldiers?

This is a Strategy Game, AoE or CnC are REAL TIME Strategy Games, so the labels are correct.

I like these complex strategy games, but this game is terrible.
The tutorial is completely useless and tells you 20% of what you want to know.
There is tons of options and features and finding your way around them is a fucking puzzle. You get no help whatsoever, you are supposed to either know how everything works from the beginning or sit for several hours trying to figure it out.

in the game i totally believe you about the tutorial. ^^
I did not play it, as i played HoI2 before and there i got "teached" by a friend, not by the tutorial.
So this clearly gave me a better start-off with the game, it seems. ^^
If you like this kinda games and get into it, you can have your fun,
but even then there is the possibility that you do not like it, as tastes are different.

@Roughstylez this isn't only a "strategy" game. it's also a "grand strategy" because it includes, science, politics, diplomacy, etc, not just the military. but it still lets you control war doen to a regimental level which deems it a "strategy" game too. but it is by no means a "tactical" game, as you well said, because you do not actually direct battles.

@Roughstylez HOI and Paradox are known for some of the best simulations of actual war as it was. Maybe a smaller scale tactical element would be fun for some of the more 'meth-head mega-click' generation (which I am also a member), but this game is for the cerebral. If you've read Operation Barbarossa (or any book about WWII), this is the game for you.

All Paradox games are played best in Multiplayer.
I've played EU3 HTTT with up to 8 people, that one with 8 was over two days.
Best ever! After 20 hours of playing I can tell you that players are as close to the real thing as it gets. Speed of game remains low and constant, you plan every attack and def, every unit movement to its smallest detail, simply because you can and you have to. It's no longer a game, you become the protector of a nation you've built up.

im just reading some of the comments and im blown away. there is TONS of stuff you can do in this game!!! i actually dont find enough time to do it, some of you need to explore the game a bit more. Otherwise, set the damn timer to extremely fast (as i have already stated in another comment). Go and launch a fucking campain against a small neighbouring country. Who cares if others attack you? its much easier to defend rather than to attack anyway. There is so much more i can talk about...........

The game starts in 1936, that is the earliest and you cant start in 1940 either. And if you could do that a division just takes like 9-10 months to make if you have at full production. In reality a division takes that long to make them trained!

This game takes forever to get anything done. I started research for something on January 1 1936 and it was finished December 22 1936. of course I put the time movement to 5x fast forwards, but the game goes by hours! HOURS!? so I went to production. I put some buildings and units in production. I started, same date, and would have infantry ready around December too! SO, I went and did some laundry, homework, and ran some errands in town. When I got back it was October! FUCK! great details tho
