The axe he's using is a Fiskars X25 - about as good as it gets. His aim is very very good though. Having used one of these axes, regardless of the price I'm going to have to get one, they are the bogs dollocks..

The ax IS important. He is using a Fiskars, a Finnish ax that has a teflon type of coating. I didnt understand its use until i saw this video -- thank you!

I was frustrated by the fiskars because it doesnt stick in the wood, so you cant set the ax then turn the piece over to bang the head, thus parting the wood.

but in this technique the Fiskars comes out cleaning, allowing this GREAT method. Wow!

@cavemantiger Well, in Sweden there is someone owning the forest wherever you go, although it's not really expensive to buy wood, very very cheap, so no Swede gives a shit, besides it's safer to have a professional to cut down a tree and deliver it to the person who needs it so he doesn't need to rent a truck to carry the wood.

We have a good system when it comes to this, so its not really more expensive then going out and chop your own wood.

I think the key has to be properly dried wood. Try this with the best axe and that elastic band yet with a tree that was just cut down and you wouldnt even get near this result. That said the rubber band is a great idea to chop big logs faster!

Such a simple, clever solution.

Frozen wood, already very dry, and no knots. Uses a proper tool for the job, this special design of axe. Adds a very unique device, that chain/bungee retainer. Has a trailer (truck bed) at a decent height. I'd say that all in all, very well thought out method. If that pace could be sustained, I'd say 2 cords per day would be rather easy.

I've owned two Fiskars axes exactly like that. They're advertised as having an unbreakable handle. Both handles on mine broke almost immediately (I was not abusing them). They replaced it the first time for free and the second time I just got a refund. The magic here is in the chain/band and in having bone dry wood that is perfectly straight grained with no knots. Its his speed and aim that is impressive.

Of course its the rubber band, it holds the wood together but gives it enough stretch for the axe to slide in and out easily. Otherwise its a matter of balancing the next piece to split it again. You could keep going and make thinner kindling if you wanted.

I used to chop a lot of wood and I can see this piece of wood is perfect for chopping. If wood is with nods inside and hard, there is no chance to split it that easy. You would need 4kg heavy axe and to hit with x3-4 more force than this guy is doing. I used to chop this kind of wood too, soft one and it's nice, resting me, like playing.
