I'd like to thank you two guys :P I've just got the game for my birthday, and after watching your Dark Souls walkthroughs, I've rung the first bell, and gotten all the way down to the just outside the Capra Demon before dying the FIRST time, and that FIRST, was because of a stupid mistake. Thanks guys! :)

James you can buy a catalyst (to do spells) and 2 spells in the new londo ruins (the blacksmith sells them there)

also if you want to be a magician level up your intelligence and attunement.

Just to let you guys know, dark souls is different from demon's souls. If you die as a human in dark souls nothing changes, as proof i let a balder knight hit my character, killed it & checked how much hp i lost, took 439 damage jumped off the bridge & let the same knight do the same attack, the 2nd attack also did 439 damage. Hope it eases your mind if you thought the game would get harder. This was done on a ng+ file as I'm not sure if my main file would survive since basic hollows do 1400+

James, I would suggest upgrading that estoc to +5, because it has fast attacks, long reaches and does more damage than a spear, you can also hide behind a shield and attack with it. Trust me, Or another choice would be to grind for points and upgrade your strength to use the drake sword with one hand. And also there is another fire keeper soul in New Londo ruins, right when you enter the first ghost area head right through the arches and head right again on the narrow passage, and there you go
